She was one of America's most iconic, endearing and beloved screen personalities of all-time, and though she has been out of the public eye for many years now, she will surely be missed....

Goodbye Shirley and thanks for the memories.

Note: I am particularly fond of Shirley's later films of the 1940s, especially the classic 1944 drama Since You Went Away with Claudette Colbert and Jennifer Jones, and the classic 1947 comedy The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer with the great Carey Grant and Myna Loy. The third video posted is one of the great hilarious scenes from the latter film.

Yes, it was sad to hear of her loss,  I could never think of her as an adult even after she married, I  always remember her as "Curly Top" and her singing On the good Ship, Lollipop.  ant that one line about her goose can lay an egg and the caretaker or whomever she was said something like"what's so good about that> and she came back with "well, can you lay an egg?"  or something close to that. I haven't watched her movies in awhile, so my memory isn't the good right now.

She will be missed.

Susan,

That sweet scene you mentioned was indeed from 1935's Curly Top, and it was with the great (and always a bit frightening) character actress, Rafaela Ottiano
. However, the song "On The Good Ship Lollipop" was from 1934's Bright Eyes.

Thank you Chip,
That scene is just so funny, even for the time it was done.  I do see the infomercials from time to time, and I crack up every time I see this scene.

Yes indeed Susan, it is timeless.

By the way, if I recall correctly, you had said that you don't get TCM anymore; so I thought I would post their tribute to Shirley below. As always, they did a great job.

Thank You Chip,
Yes, sadly I do not receive TCM anymore.  That clip actually made me cry, because she was such a beautiful woman and actress.

Thank you again, I appreciate it.

My pleasure, Susan. And yes, the TCM montage memorial tributes always evoke a lot of emotion. And that is especially true for this tribute for Shirley because we always think of her as that sweet, adorable and precocious little girl.

Some of us may remember the children's anthology series Shirley Temple's Storybook which ran on NBC from 1958-61.  The show featured adaptations of fairy tales and family oriented stories.

Sixteen episodes aired on NBC between January and December of 1958 in different time periods.  NBC dropped the show due to cost, despite its success.  ABC re-ran 13 of those episodes in 1959.  The show returned to NBC in September 1960 as The Shirley Temple Show in a regular Sunday night time slot.  I recall watching the show and IIRC it ran opposite Lassie and Dennis The Menace on CBS.  After one season and 25 episodes, The Shirley Temple Show was canceled.  The show was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Children's Programming in 1961.  No doubt this show deserved a better fate.

TCM will air a marathon of Shirley Temple movies on March 9.

That's correct Frank, at the end of the TCM montage memorial tribute that I posted in my post of February 14th it announces that there will be an evening of Shirley's films shown on March 9th.

Unfortunately, the schedule of films is missing some of her best pictures of the 1930s, including The Little Colonel, Curly Top and The Littlest Rebel (all from 1935). It's also missing her best picture from the 1940s, Since You Went Away (1944); as well as two other fine films from the '40s: Fort Apache (1948) and The Story Of Seabiscuit (1949).

What TCM really should have done is a 24-hour marathon of her films, like they have done several times in the past for iconic departed Hollywood Stars. The most recent one being the 24-hour tribute they did for Liz Taylor. There's no doubt that Shirley was a big enough Hollywood Star to merit this same honor.

Posted below is the TCM schedule of the films that will be shown; all times are EST:

Without going into details Chip,
Someone posted something about Shirley Temple and how President Obama didn't have the flags lowered to half mast, but he did for Whitney Houston, and I re-shared it, and someone had some very negative comments about Shirley Temple.  So I blocked these "Supposed" friends.

They have been nasty way too many times, so I warned them, but they persisted.

Yes she will always be in  our memories as "we always think of her as that sweet, adorable and precocious little girl."and Curly Top.

I gather from your post that this dust-up you alluded to happened on Facebook.

Gee, I can't imagine anyone dissing Shirley Temple. Unlike most celebrities today, she did nothing but set a good wholesome example, and she did it honorably with class, style and dignity. In addition she was a good American patriot, having served her country via appointments by President Nixon (to the U.N. General Assembly), President Ford (as U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, and then later as Chief of Protocol of the U.S.) and President Bush (as U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia).

By the way, the one that ordered flags to be lowered to half-mast for Whitney Houston was Governor Chris Christie (for the State of New Jersey). It was very controversial and many were indignant about it, including me.

Re:Goodbye, Curly Top

Chip,
The thing I re-shared on facebook was a picture of Whitney Houston and Shirley Temple, and there was something about when Whitney died that The White House or President Obama ordered the flags to be lowered to half mast, and that Whitney was a Democrat and died from a drug overdose, but Shirley Temple was a Republican, and an Ambassador etc, I don't remember exactly at the moment, but she was a Republican, and anything I have posted about Obamacare and other things that have happened since President Obama has been in office, has brought our Country down even more, and these particular people always had something negative to say, and a lot of the times they were very nasty about it.

Yet when they posted something, I always commented politely on it.   But getting back to Shirley Temple, because she was a Democrat, The White House or President Obama didn't do anything to honor Shirley Temple who died from natural causes and not use of illegal drugs.

I didn't really want to get off-topic, but I guess my comment needed more explanation, and sometimes one topic is related to something else.  But even though Whitney Houston was a wonderful songstress, she did some bad things which took her life, and Shirley Temple didn't do any of that and she didn't get the respect she should of from The White House.

Whitney basically caused her own demise because of the drug usage and our "Curly Top" didn't do anything to cause her death and in my opinion, Shirley Temple was a better celebrity than Whitney Houston.  Yes, I did love some of her music, but still she doesn't compare to Shirley Temple on many levels.  (Sorry if anyone was a true Whitney Houston fan)  I mean no disrespect whatsoever.

Re:Goodbye, Curly Top

I don't know what President Obama did for Whitney Houston that was beyond the norm; but as for Governor Christie, he went beyond the norm for her because she was a New Jersey native. But regardless the reason, it was wrong; and not just for Whitney Houston, but for any celebrity of that type.
There's even a well-known story of a man in Michigan who burned the New Jersey flag in protest.

The sacred honor of ordering flags to be flown at half-staff has always been limited to individuals who have served their country with distinction: Presidents, Congressional members, Supreme Court Justices, Armed Forces personnel, and so on. It has also been done in the past to honor certain groups like veterans, firefighters and police officers. It's also done to commemorate certain anniversaries like the attack on Pearl Harbor, and after national tragedies like 9/11 and foreign tragedies like the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. And lastly it's done for foreign dignitaries like Pope John Paul II and Nelson Mandela.

As for any celebrity getting that honor, if there's anyone that was really worthy of it, then it was Shirley Temple because of her work for Presidents Nixon, Ford and Bush.

So true Chip,
They do lower the flags t half staff for several other person's.  But these particular people commented sarcastically, when I re-shared the photo "I wonder why???"

The are devout Democrats, and hate anything that goes against President Obama, and this posting had nothing to do with Politics, but more with Common Courtesy to honor a great woman who had done so much for this Country, and I asked them to please not respond negatively, or I would block them, and sure enough, they did, so I blocked them.

There is a time when we can put aside Political differences and honor people who well deserve to be honored by having the flags lowered to half mast.

These people were always looking to start trouble, so it is best that they are blocked from contacting me, or seeing anything I post.

Chip,

I think Facebook pulled any posts about it, I don't remember which date I re-shared it, but I could only go back to about the last third of February 15 and not any further.  I believe I may have re-shared it last Saturday or Sunday.  Facebook often deletes posts, that have nothing wrong with them too, and they don't let you know about it.
I just searched online and found it on Snopes.com, and they are basically saying it might or might not be true, they basically have "Mixture" instead of "True" or "False"

Rumor has it that President Obama put the flag @half mast for drug user
Whitney Houston..but completely ignored republican diplomat Shirley

The person that did that photo must have been thinking of Chris Christie, not Barack Obama. As I had said earlier, it was Christie who ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff in the state of New Jersey. And to reiterate, Obama might have done something special to honor Whitney Houston when she died, but I don't know what it was.

By the way, it was probably the unflattering picture of Whitney Houston, rather than the wording under the picture, that got some folks on Facebook so riled up.

Re:Goodbye, Curly Top

Date Posted:02/22/2014 12:40:45Copy HTML

Chip,
It was only one user, a husband and wife, and their first comment was "I wonder why?"  From previous experiences with them, it had nothing to do with the comment under Whitney Houston, but because Shirley Temple was a Republican, and Whitney was a Democrat as are the husband and wife.

We had an online argument about anything that the Republicans put out there against Obamacare and Benghazi and and even our young men and women who are both I'm sure Republicans and Democrats that are defending our Country, and so on, and in private, they were even nastier, and I told them that I was going to unfriend them because I didn't need their verbal abuse, and it wasn't going to take that from anyone.  Then I told them I was going to block them because I had asked when I re-shared whatever it was "Please, no nasty comments"  I am just re-posting what other people are and that we are losing our young men and women in going to war against a Country we have no business in doing.   This was when Libya, I believe, used poison gas against their citizens.  Yes, it is wrong for anyone to blatantly kill innocent citizens, but what gives Obama the right to decide that we should go after their leader and get more of our young men and women killed and then even have attacks here on our own soil because of the Libyan citizens who are living in our Country, and even American citizens who are against us attacking Libya.

They called me some very nasty things and when I told them I was going to unfriend them, they begged me not to and apologized.  So I let it go, and then one time he was having trouble breathing and almost died, and I expressed my concern for him, and they both thanked me.  So when I re-shared the photo of Whitney and Shirley, I asked for no negative comments, because this wasn't a reason to bring Politics into the discussion, and that yes they were both celebrities, but also Shirley was an Ambassador and a great actress who America fell in love with and still loves.  I also mentioned that Whitney was a wonderful singer and yet they still had more negative comments about it, and before they did the comment that made me block and unfriend them, I told them that if they said anything more negative, I would block and unfriend them, and sure enough they said something else.  So they are no longer able to comment, see anything I post, even if it is on a mutual friends wall or timeline, and they can't contact me.

I'm sorry for getting this way off topic, but this is just how it happened, and they kept it up on several other occasions.

They always called me a Repug, and I'm not really affiliated with any Political Party, there are things on both side that I don't agree with, but I can't change them, and I never said anything negative about anything they posted.

Again, about the picture, it is not proven that it did or didn't happen according to Snopes.com.  I usually check there before posting anything and at the time of the post, there wasn't anything about this picture.

Merry Christmas in February!
