Hey all,

For the 1st time in a very long time, WPIX is not showing March of the Wooden Soldiers on Thanksgiving morning.  I can't even imagine why.  They are instead showing a film on the NY Giants 1986 season.  Very disappointed.

Henry,

WPIX will be airing Babes In Toyland (aka March Of The Wooden Soldiers) on Christmas Day at 1pm, following the Yule Log.

Hello to all, been a fan of this site for a long time now.  I finally decided to join up, and this is my first post!

Henry, I am sad to hear this news about the Wooden Soldiers.  Although I look forward to seeing it on Christmas Day, one of my longtime traditions has been to watch it on Thanksgiving morning, then switch over to catch the end of the Macy's Parade, and the arrival of Santa Claus.  I have enjoyed sharing this part of my tradition with my daughter over the last few years.  Then at noon, I would put the radio onto 104.3, and listen to Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant.  I would enjoy all this while the smell of turkey and stuffing began to fill the house!

Hey, Rob...I actually listen to Alice's Restaurant on 104.3 myself. They traditionally play it twice. Once at midnite of Thanksgiving and again at noon on Thanksgiving Day. As for "March" we as a family used to always watch it just as we were sitting down to eat the big bird! My father said when he was a kid, Channel 11 used to always show March just as HIS family sat down to eat. Of course with the invention of VCR's and DVD's it makes it easy to follow the same longtime tradition!

Chip: Is Channel 11 in fact showing the original Babes In Toyland with that title card, or will it be just the standard "March" title that we are all so used to?

Sorry Rich, I didn't notice that you had a question for me at the end of your previous post until now.

WPIX is showing the version of the movie that they always have. I refer to the movie by its rightful and proper name (Babes In Toyland) and not its reissue title (March Of The Wooden Soldiers) because I am a classic movie buff and refuse to refer to it by anything other than its proper 1934 theatrical release title.

Chip also refers to a good pastrami sandwich as a Reuben which may or may not be correct!

Yeah, I'm around here and there. Just trying to stay above water with this house of mine. I could never stay away from you guys though. With everything I went through when this site was is its infancy, I have to drop in from time to time and see what's going on.

Hey everyone!

I found this really neat clip on youtube, go to the 7:50 mark and hear Henry Brandon (Barnaby) tell his story of how he got the part in the film.  This is great stuff.  I have two young daughters who I try to explain movies to, and how they're all make believe.  They love this and ask me to play it from time to time, they can't believe how nice Barnaby is in real life.  Enjoy!

hi everyone...it's nice to be back! I recall one year that Ch.11 (WPIX) surprisingly did NOT show "March" at all during any part of thanksgiving or Christmas. Never knew the reason behind that or the person who was resposible for letting that happen! i believe it was sometime in the mid 1980s. Does anyone remember the exact year it was? Needless to say it was a real let down. It always used to be shown on the Sunday after thanksgiving usually about 1PM.

Huh, interesting. I never knew that March was actually originally titled Babes in Toyland. My family always used those two titles to differentiate from the original Turkey Day tradition, and the later Disney adaptation.

Also, I don't know WHO was running it, as I didn't bother to check what network it was on, but Babes/March WAS being aired on Thanksgiving.

TCM (Turner Classic Movies), which owns the rights to the film, is the only one that shows the original picture with its original title card of Babes In Toyland. All other networks show the retitled print of the movie called March Of The Wooden Soldiers.

As for this month of December, unfortunately, TCM isn't scheduled to air Babes In Toyland.

Posted below is the original 1934 Trailer for the picture.

Were there any other edits that were made to the film besides the title?

The colorized version of the film under the reissue title of March Of The Wooden Soldiers is the same as the original 1934 black & white release Babes In Toyland.

However, before it was colorized, the movie under the reissue title of March Of The Wooden Soldiers did have various cuts over the years. It was discussed extensively on the board back in 2005.

Does PIX have anything planned for Thanksgiving Day?
EDIT: never mind.
