Date Posted：09/26/2009 06:55:15Copy HTML ***THIS IS A YULE LOG.COM EXCLUSIVE***  I got word late today from Gordon Anderson (Sr. VP & GM of Collectors' Choice Music) that after all of the hard work, it is a done deal! UMG (Universal Music Group) has acquiesced, and finally consented to granting his company the full legal rights to print and distribute Mantovani's 1958 "Christmas Carols" LP on CD! It will be released sometime in late November. As soon as I have the exact release date, I'll post it on this thread. This is the first-ever complete CD release of this classic and legendary Christmas LP anywhere in the world. And if you take all of the CD exclusives that Collectors' Choice Music has released over the years -- including the Hollyridge Strings CD -- they can't combined together even come close to the magnitude of this one single release. It's that huge. After more than 35 years of collecting and amassing a collection of thousands of Christmas albums, I can tell you categorically that this Mantovani album, along with Percy Faith's "Music Of Christmas" and "Hallelujah" (aka "Music Of Christmas, Vol. 2") are the 3 greatest instrumental Christmas music albums ever recorded. As I have said on the message board before, when it comes to instrumental Christmas music, Number 1 is Percy Faith, a close Number 2 is Mantovani, and everybody else follows far behind. That's just the way it is, folks. Getting this magnificent LP back in print is one of two things that I am the most proud that I have done in my life; the other one, of course, being the audio restoration of the Yule Log soundtrack in 2006. I know that Monty (as he was affectionately known by his friends and fans) is smiling up there and I am so happy for his family and extremely gratified that I was able to contribute in a meaningful and substantive way to his legacy as one of the two greatest instrumental Christmas music artists ever; the other one, of course, being the great master, Percy Faith. Here is an advanced look at the wonderful blurb that Collectors' Choice Music will use to promote the album on their website and in their catalog -- much of which came from information that I had given to Gordon over these last several months as they have been zealously pursuing the album: With this •Collectors’ Choice Music• release, we put back in print one of the most famous Christmas albums of all time, Mantovani’s 1958 album •Christmas Carols•. In its original mono incarnation released in 1953, this album charted twice; then, with the advent of stereo technology, Mantovani re-recorded it in stereo in 1958, and THAT version of the album went on to chart *four* more times! Yet, that later stereo version (and when you think about it, how can you listen to the sweeping sound of Mantovani in anything but stereo?) has NEVER been on CD, and the mono version has only been on CD overseas in an inferior-sounding version. So, we’re really restoring a perennial holiday favorite here; includes gorgeous versions of •Adeste Fideles; Hark, the Herald Angels Sing; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; White Christmas; Good King Wenceslas; O Holy Night; The First Noel; Joy to the World; Silent Night, Holy Night; O Tannenbaum; Midnight Waltz; Nazareth; O Little Town of Bethlehem•, and •Skaters’ Waltz•. Merry Chistmas, everyone!  By the way, at my request, Gordon also secured from Universal Music the rights to use the original London Records album cover artwork. And just to make sure what he had was correct, he sent it to me for my approval; I'm happy to say that it checked out and all systems are go! And in case you haven't read it, here now is an excerpt from a post that I previously filed on the message board; there couldn't be a more appropriate time to re-post it: Please do not be fooled by the myriad of Christmas albums you see out there by Mantovani; most of these are by "The Mantovani Orchestra," made with a totally different orchestra and conductor and recorded long after Monty (as he was affectionately known by his friends and fans) was dead. Mantovani had just two Christmas albums for London Records: "Christmas Carols", which was originally recorded and released in 1953 in Mono, then re-recorded and re-released in Stereo in 1958; and the second was "Christmas Greetings From Mantovani," which was released in 1963. The only thing to date that has been released from these two albums has only been compilations. In addition -- to make matters even more confusing for everyone out there, in 2004 a European record label called Christmas Legends got the rights to the original 1953 Mono version of Monty's first Christmas album, "Christmas Carols". It is available as an import, but I don't recommend it as it is inferior to the 1958 Stereo version both artistically and especially, technologically. The only major difference between the original 1953 Mono version and the later 1958 Stereo version of Mantovani's "Christmas Carols" LP, is that on Side one of the 1953 version The First Noel is the first song and Adeste Fideles is the last song; on the 1958 version it's just the opposite: Adeste Fideles is the first song and The First Noel is the last song -- and I couldn't agree with that change more. When I was a kid in the 1960's (already a Christmas music junkie) and I'd listen to my mother's original Mono recording of this album that she had bought in the early 1950s, I always thought to myself how great it would have been if they had reversed the order of these two songs -- never realizing that when the 1958 Stereo version was recorded and released several years later (after she had bought her original Mono copy) they did exactly just that! If you are not familiar with Monty's great version of Adeste Fideles, you will not be able to understand why it was so appropriate for them to make this change and start the album this way. The song was a paradigmatic example of his great signature sound: his technique of cascading, soaring and especially tumbling violins. It literally brings tears to your eyes. As for his version of The First Noel, Monty's arrangement for this song made it a perfect song to complete Side one of the album, again it was quintessential Mantovani. Mantovani's music brilliantly reflected something his father taught him as a child: he said to him, "Put feeling into your music, my boy -- music without feeling is little more than a noise." Well, as a result of his unequivocal success, we are now left with a legacy of a lot of great music with a hell of a lot of feeling. Mantovani ranks second, only to Percy Faith, in producing the greatest instrumental Christmas music ever recorded. In fact, in the original "classic" 3-hour presentation of the Yule Log, when most artists were represented by 1 or 2 songs, he had an impressive 4 songs. This was again, second only to the master, Percy Faith, who had an astounding and unprecedented 10 songs -- and deservedly so, I might add.  Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Considering how late the deal was struck with UMG, the December 1st release date is still pretty impressive. I thought that December 1st was the release date for CCM orders while at Amazon it's not until December 8th. I pre-ordered mine at CCM on November 25th but I have not received an e-mail yet about them sending out the CD to me. Perhaps CCM isn't releasing the CD until December 8th too. As long as it gets released soon and sent out in time for this Christmas.

Dave: The only way to get the CD sooner is to order it directly from CCM. However, even their release date might possibly get pushed back again. Their sister company, DeepDiscount.com, has begun shipping their pre-orders today. However, for all other vendors (Amazon, CD Universe, etc.) the street date is December 22, 2009. My order with Amazon might arrive a little late, but it'll be still worth the wait. The Dec 22 ship date might be cutting it close, but maybe it'll arrive the 24th! If it does, it'll be a holiday miracle! If not, it'll be a late gift to treasure!
Even if the Mantovani CD does arrive after Christmas, it'll be a joy to hear it once again! I'm sure it sounds beautiful in its digital re-mastering. You should be very proud of your role in bringing this treasured holiday chestnut back to life! Thanks also goes to all of us, myself included, who sent e-mails to Gordon Anderson! |

I was really concerned when the release date went down to the wire that folks might not receive it in time for Christmas. In the end, the timing worked out perfect as it will now make for an even more visceral experience hearing Monty's extremely lush and poignant arrangements when the tide of the Christmas spirit is at its apex. Better have a box of tissues handy -- in fact, you'll be reaching for them with the very opening number; his extraordinarily sensitive and moving interpretation of Adeste Fideles. And by the way, it is no strange coincidence that this song also happens to lead off the new 4th hour of the Yule Log soundtrack that I created this year. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Date Posted：12/22/2009 05:20:03Copy HTML I'm starting to worry that either I won't get my copy of the CD from CCM until after Christmas or that my copy got lost in the mail. CCM said that they shipped mine out on December 10th. I paid $6.95 for 5 to 10 business day shipping. I believe it should be coming from the USPS and not UPS. In the e-mail they had sent me, it said that the estimated delivery date would be between December 19th and the 24th. I checked today's mail (December 22nd) and still nothing. Every day, I go to the mailbox hoping it would be there, similar to when Charlie Brown had checked his mailbox hoping for a Christmas or Valentine's Day card and ends up with nothing. If I don't get it by December 24th, I will e-mail CCM's customer service and tell them that I didn't receive the CD and to please send me out a replacement one. I had ordered CDs from CCM in the past and the CDs came either on time or even earlier than that. I just hope that the CD will be on its way either tomorrow or by Christmas Eve.

I'm impressed by the art/design of the release - the colors are nice and strong, and the original/vintage artwork is nicely replicated too. Won't be able to listen to it for a couple of hours - and even then it'll be at work so I won't be able to listen closely. But, so far it visually exceeds my expectations. I have CCM's cd of ? And The Mysterians and while it's ok, it wasn't that well made - the cd was manufactured poorly and on the cheap (even if it sounds good, all the songs won't necessarily play with jumping around a bit). So far, A+!

Date Posted：12/26/2009 01:51:23Copy HTML Update: I still haven't received my Mantovani CD from CCM yet even though it was guaranteed for delivery by Christmas Eve. As I had said earlier, the estimated delivery date was supposed to be between December 19th and December 24th. It's now Saturday, the day after Christmas, and I'll be calling CCM's customer service today. If customer service is not available until Monday, I will give them a call on that day. I don't blame CCM. I have ordred from them before and their delivery time is normally reliable. I blame the USPS for either losing my CD, damaging it, or mailing it to the wrong address. I'll update you all as soon as I get some more information on my order. |

Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to listen to it, as delivery was late in the afternoon and I had to leave for my Christmas Eve and Day festivities.
I listened to it upon arriving home today (12/26). It was worth the wait! Listening to it was a great way to put a wrap on the holiday! Great to have it in my home again! |

Date Posted：11/10/2010 05:53:21Copy HTML Well, it appears that Dutton Vocalion's Christmas CD release this year is going to be the Decca eqivalent ("Mantovani Christmas Album") of London's "Christmas Carols." Last year's Collectors' Choice CD clearly has the edge with it's use of the original artwork, and the fact that the Dutton Vocalion release will be part of a two-fer, the other half of which is not Christmas music. It makes me wonder why Dutton Vocalion could not have turned it's attention to a couple of other artists whose music they release on a regular basis (Stanley Black and Frank Chacksfield), and offered first-ever CD issues of their Christmas work. Unless there's something I'm missing - this Mantovani release has a sense of "been there, done that" to it.

Date Posted：11/10/2010 11:24:14Copy HTML I've mentioned Stanley Black and Frank Chacksfield to Oliver Lomax (A&R chief at Dutton-Vocalion Records) several times in the past, but as I have previously stated on the message board, Dutton-Vocalion is reticent to issue Christmas material because of its limited marketing potential (being a seasonal item). That's why this year they chose to reissue Monty's Christmas album as a 2-fer with the 1965 album, Classical Encores. As for the album artwork for the Christmas LP, they used the British Decca cover and it's on the back of the CD (but only a small picture). Only the outer edges of the Christmas cover are shown on the front of the CD. Simon Wiernik (Dutton-Vocalian's sales manager) told me that's how they chose to market it. I in turn told him that what they should have done at the very least is had a split cover on the front of the CD, showing both covers. I too found the Christmas Carols Cd backordered upon ordering. It did arrive after Christmas and it was as GREAT as described. A few questions though:
With the shipping/stocking issues should we infer that demand was high for the disk? Has the response to the release of this incredible album sparked CCM, or others, to open their catalogs for other great record releases? Just wondering. Cheers, Bob ".....Isn"t that glorious? Bob, The demand for the CD was high, but the shipping delays were primarily due to production delays with UMG (Universal Music Group). As for future new releases, CCM is unfortunately now out of the business of reissuing classic LPs on CD (Christmas or otherwise). It seems that due to this, stock is being cleared out, and while CCM titles are still regular price through their website, www.deepdiscount.com has CCM releases that are in stock on sale for extremely low prices. The Mantovani title is $2.09. I loaded up on a bunch of CCM titles there, all under $4 each.
I'm looking forward to giving this addition to my Christmas music collection a spin this year when I start playing Christmas music. Up until now the only Mantovani in my collection has been Christmas Magic, so this will make a nice addition. |

Jon, The album, Christmas Magic, which was
originally released in 1980 by Holiday Records, is not authentic
and genuine Mantovani Christmas music. It is by "The Mantovani
Orchestra" with a totally different conductor and orchestra. Of the ten
songs on the album, 5 are re-recorded versions of songs Monty previously did on
his two authentic Christmas albums, and 5 are new Christmas songs that he had
never recorded during his career. By the way, DeepDiscount.com and Collectors'
Choice Music are sister companies; they are both owned by
Super D Distribution.

But now it will be nice to have the real deal added to my rotation. |
