Kitty Wells, the original Queen of Country Music, had an outstanding Christmas album that is sadly all but forgotten today.

The album was Christmas Day With Kitty Wells, and it was released by Decca Records in 1962. If you love good Christmas music, I guarantee you will love this album -- even if you're not particularly a fan of country music. Unfortunately, the LP has never had a proper CD release, as it has never been properly digitally remastered and thus far has only been reissued in an abridged form with just nine of the original twelve songs.

There are four great original songs on the album: "Dasher With The Light Upon His Tail," "Santa's On His Way," "Christmas Ain't Like Christmas Anymore," and the best one I have for you now, "Ole Kris Kringle."

And here's another one of the aforementioned great originals from the LP, "Dasher With The Light Upon His Tail."

Hi Chip,

Thanks for posting these Kitty Wells clips.  We just don't hear her records anymore on the radio.  I'm not 100% sure as I haven't looked at a lot of Christmas albums, but I think I have her album in my collection as the picture you posted looks very familiar.  I have so many records that I haven't categorized yet so I can't be sure if I have it or not.  I may be thinking I saw it at a Thrift Store and that might be why it looks familiar to me.  If it was in good shape I know I would've bought it.   My short term memory isn't as good as it used to be lol.  I can't even tell you hom many Christmas albums I have in front of me near my computer, but would guess there are at least 300+.  Than I have a couple boxes with maybe 200 in each maybe more and that is just my Christmas albums.

I am slowly getting them onto the computer where I am able to get easier access to what I actually have.  It's a tedious process as if the music skips it isn't something I will want to keep and then I have to try and find a better copy online somewhere.  I don't mind the pips and pops as that is what gives vinyl it's distinctive quality.

Susan,

If it turns out that you don't have the LP in your collection, not to worry; there are usually copies being sold on eBay at reasonable prices.

By the way, backing up Kitty Wells on this album were the Jordanaires, who were most famous as Elvis Presley's longtime vocal backup group.

Thanks Chip,

I still have some albums packed in boxes and if I have this album it would be in those boxes.  Being that we are trying to move, it is just easier to leave them in boxes that are already packed.  I hope we can find a place before the winter sets in but it isn't looking to promising.  If by some chance I don't have this album, like you mentioned, I can probably get in on eBay.

Thanks again.

Chip,

Do you know if the version that is being sold online are the tracks off the '62 lp, or are they re-recorded versions?

Another questions, does the album 'Christmas' that was released on Mistletoe records contains all the Decca tracks... I have a feeling that it is missing the same tracks as the CD.

Yes Jack, the tracks offered for download by Junction Records are all from the 1962 LP except the last two (There Won't Be Any Tree This Christmas and The Story Of Christmas), which are bonus tracks that were recorded years later.

Junction Records is a division of Junction Recording Studio, which was founded by Kitty Wells and her husband Johnnie Wright. It is now run by their grandson, Junior (John Sturdivant, Jr.). Junior used to be the drummer in Marty Stewart's band. His full time mission now is running the family business and promoting new recording artists.

This is a very difficult time for the family right now as Kitty and Johnnie's daughter Ruby (Junior's aunt) passed away a few weeks ago -- just shy of her 70th birthday. Very sad.

By the way, for anybody who is interested, Junior told me that he will soon be posting more mp3's of his grandmother's music on his website in the very near future.

As for your last question about the Mistletoe reissue LP; it is missing the same songs as the reissue CD: White Christmas, Blue Christmas and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.

It's a good song, but still has a touch of that country "twang" that turns me off.  I've never been able to listen to country music because of that.

That classic country twang is what makes her music so grand. I was just talking to Kitty's grandson, Junior Sturdivant, about this very subject the other day. And how the country music of today is not true country music because it is devoid of the vocal twang and steel guitar that was the hallmark of country music up until the end of the 1980s.

My openness to all genres of music is exactly what makes my "Top Play" such a true representation of the greatest Christmas music ever recorded -- even if I must say so myself.
