Didn't Sony issue some CD's that had SACD on one side and CD on the flip side? Where can you purchase these, especially the Nat King Cole LP referenced? Thanks, John |

I think I saw it in the Collector's Choice Music catalog too, but didn't have the release date. |

The title track is the the same remix from the original three-track studio tapes that Steve Hoffman did for the hybrid SACD of The Nat King Cole Story on the Analogue Productions label a few years back. It sounds wonderfully warm and clear, albeit much "drier" (less reverb) than on the original LP. The remainder of the tracks are the original mixes done in 1960, with everything that implies both good and bad (i.e. occasional dropouts). But for my money it definitely sounds better than any previous CD issue of this album. (Incidentally, Kevin Gray and not Steve Hoffman actually did the mastering on this. My bad!) It does seem like something of a missed opportunity that they didn't reissue this under its original title (The Magic of Christmas) with its original artwork and tracklist ("Deck the Halls" as Track 1 and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" as Track 3) restored. They could have added "The Christmas Song" on the end as a bonus track, along with the alternate, English-language version of "All Come All Ye Faithful" that's turned up elsewhere. I'm guessing Universal probably forbade Audio Fidelity from doing anything other than a straight reissue of the album in its best-known configuration. |
