Chip,

Do you happen to know if the Buckingham Strings ever released an album of their Christmas music?

No Justin, they didn't. In fact they released no albums at all for the simple reason that they were an in-house studio group only.

The Buckingham Strings, along with other in-house studio groups like the Fairfield Strings and the Fantasy Strings, recorded custom music for easy listening radio stations in the 1970s and 1980s.

Interesting.  So I guess there is no way for someone like you or I to get access to any of their recordings?

Also, a question about another artist.....did Francis Goya ever release a Christmas album?  I see his songs listed on Christmas playlists but can't seem to locate an album that contains his Christmas music.   Thanks!

Sorry Justin, but sadly that's a no to both questions.

Chip,

I found this while looking around the net today...

http://www.kalahari.net/music/Christmas-Album/1/17018208.aspx

Not sure if this is legit or not though.  I also have no idea when this album would have been recorded?

Justin,

I don't know if the CD is legitimate or not, but I do find it quite strange that it is only available in South Africa of all places. This CD isn't even listed on Mr. Goya's website, nor is it listed on any other retail music site that I am aware of. This one is a real mystery to say the least.

Then, to add to the mystery, there is yet another obscure Christmas CD out there: this one is made in Holland and there's a copy on eBay; click here to view.

I have no idea why these CDs are only available South Africa and Holland. If I can obtain any further information on them, I'll certainly let you know.

Justin,

Francis Goya has 2 songs available on the CD "An Instrumental Christmas", released by Surrey House Music.  I purchased it from them last year.  I believe that I bought it for his version of "Petit Papa Noel", as a matter of fact.  His other track on there is "Silent Night".

Ed,

Thanks for the link.  I also found this today http://www.zazell.nl/browse_bundle.aspx?bundle_id=340211 which appears to be mp3s of the cd Chip found.  I guess it makes some sense that the cd was released in Holland since Goya is from Belgium.

It has been brought to my attention by new member pdmddirector, that Francis Goya did indeed release a Christmas album called Christmas Party. It was released by CNR Records and the catalog number is 655-082.

From what I can find on the Web, it looks like the LP was released in Mr. Goya's native Belgium, which explains why it is so hard to find here in the U.S.

The Buckingham Strings, AKA Cathedral Strings is available on the "An Instrumental Christmas" from www.surreyhousemusic.com.   There are four songs from the Cathedral Strings/Brass.  The time of each song matches the Buckingham Strings songs listed on the Bonneville Christmas Music by Don Hobson.

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that The Buckingham Strings Christmas Music is available for mp3 download at Amazon, Itunes and eMusic.  They are available as of August 2010.  They are hard to find because they are not listed as Buckingham Strings, but as the Christmas Strings Volume 1 and 2.  On Volume 1 the artists are listed as Tony Osborne and Alec Gould.  On Volume 2, the artists are listed as Cy Pane and Harry Rabinowitz Christmas Strings.  I have confirmed that all of these mp3s (a total of 33 songs) are indeed the artist that we refer to as "The Buckingham Strings".  Happy Downloading.

Christmas Cheer,
Graig

Graig,

Thanks for the heads up! In what looked to be a pretty weak year for Christmas music, this is definitely a bright spot.  I downloaded both albums on Itunes the other day, and unfortunately, six of the 33 songs have noticeable blips in the first few seconds.   The songs that aren't messed up sound great though.  Not sure why "When a Child is Born" was not included.  Anyway, thanks for spotting this!

I noticed the "blips" on The Christmas Song and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.  I wasn't sure if this was an isolated problem with my computer.

Speaking of Tony Osborne, I found a nice Buckingham-style instrumental cover of Perry Como's "Christmas Dream" on another MP3 release, The Tony Osborne Orchestra Plays the Hits:

The Tony Osborne and Alec Gould Christmas Strings for digital download has disappeared from amazon. Does anyone know what happened?

Christmas Strings 1 is still available on Emusic, but volume 2 has disappeared. All is not lost though, I found it on another site called "7Digital":

It would be nice if these were issued on CD.  It seems like the mp3 downloads have some issues with a few of the songs. Sounds like there is "skipping" in a few of them.
