So this year marks the 50th anniversary for Rudolph...and as usual and regrettable as is always CBS found it necessary to edit the special in order to squeeze in as much commercial time as possible. I never saw the comoplete print until it was first released on home video. It's really unfortunate that a network insists on putting money ahead of the spirit of Christmas. Meanwhile WPIX devotes 4 commercial free hours for its viewers! Cheers to WPIX...Jeers to WCBS!!

Re:50th Anniversary For Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer

I had the post office in Rudolph, Ohio cancel a set of Rudolph stamps the same day that the 50th showing of RthRNR was broadcast.

Yes, they did cut part of the elf song out, and "Misfits" and "Fame and Fortune" did a swap sometime during the NBC or CBS showings.

I have an earlier edition on DVD that came with Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Frosty The Snowman, The Little Drummer Boy and Frosty Returns, plus a CD of 12 Classic Christmas Songs, most from the movies above.  There was included on the Rudolph DVD "Fame and Fortune" which originally aired as it appeared in 1964, but then in 1965, they replaced it with "We're a Couple of Misfit" but it was in the same segment after Hermy (sp) and Rudolph met and they were crossing the log over the crevasse when they were running away from everyone.

I also have the original 1964 TV General Electric Fantasy Hour broadcast with the original commercials from 1966, that I purchased from Rick Goldschmidt aka Rankin/Bass Historian.

Susan,

That is not correct: the song We're a Couple of Misfits was in the original 1964 premier and then it was replaced the next year in 1965 with Fame and Fortune. And then in recent years it was changed back again to the original We're a Couple of Misfits.

Chip,

I got the information from the Sony Wonder release of the DVD that came as a 3 DVD Set with a Music CD, and when I went to the Special Features, I was stating what was shown on the screen about the song, as I mentioned in my original post, which I was paraphrasing, and I misinterpreted what was being shown.

I should've included that it stated that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer originally aired in 1964 as it appears on this DVD."   The original song "We're A Couple of Misfits" was replaced in 1965 by "Fame and Fortune" That musical segment is included here for your viewing pleasure.

I apologize that I was incorrect  I did watch the Sony Wonder DVD and the song "We're a Couple of Misfits" was indeed the song, as it was also in the original 1964 broadcast with original commercials that I bought from Rick Goldschmidt aka Rankin/Bass Historian.  I am enclosing a picture of the front of the case that the DVD's came in.  I apologize about the graininess of the image as my new computer camera hasn't been adjusted correctly yet, so the images are grainy.

Rudolph

Yes, I'm acquainted with Rick, Susan. He's a great guy and has done a lot to preserve and promote the creative legacy of Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass -- especially through his website and fine books.

I've read there's continued issues with 'Silver & Gold,' in that during its HD transfer a line got cut (and still hasn't been restored, even on the newest edition for this year).

Chip,

Yes, Rick is a great guy and has done a lot in preserving all that is possible from Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass and I have seen images of items in his collection.  What a lot of memories those items bring back.

I hope people will continue to support his efforts as all the great work from Rankin/Bass is part of (mostly us old folks lol) life and it would be a shame to have it lost forever.  Such as all your hard work in getting the WPIX Yule Log restored to the original 3 hour soundtrack and then adding the additional 4th. hour as well as all that you do in getting Vintage Christmas albums released on CD.

Also, another member here has done a lot with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade whom I am sure you know,  max151/Robert Grippo.  It is people like this who make Christmas even more special
