As of 11am EST today, this was the top news story on the Yahoo dot Com Homepage:

http://whoknew.news.yahoo.com/who-knew/yule-log-origin-27542447.html#crsl=%252Fwho-knew%252Fyule-log-origin-27542447.html

Yes, the WPIX YuleLog History!

Re:YAHOO Home Page NEWS = Yule Log!!

Date Posted:12/13/2011 07:50:20Copy HTML

Fact check: The Yule Log was not originally shot in black and white in 1966 as stated in this Yahoo story; it was shot in living color. The New York Times made that mistake in an article they wrote several years ago and it has been picked up by other media outlets ever since.

I truly appreciate the attention that the program gets from the media, but more often than not after reading or seeing the stories they do, by the time I'm finished, I am pulling my hair out. This is why WPIX directs all interviews about the program to me. This one by Yahoo, however, was done on their own without authorization from the station and consultation from me.

I do my very best to prevent the dissemination of misinformation about the program out there; but unfortunately some things are just beyond my control.

Re:YAHOO Home Page NEWS = Yule Log!!

Another thing, the log they showed burning at the start of thier video on the little TV wasn't the WPIX Yule Log.  They also didn't mention that the filming that was done in California because they weren't allowed to use the fireplace at Gracie Mansion because they accidentally burned a very expensive Oriental Rug there.  They also stated that the new footage was a 6 minute and 3 seconds loop.

I believe it is roughly 7 minutes from when it starts and the coals burn down and then are back up again.  I tried to view the comments, but it doesn't seem to work.  So I can't comment back or see what was said and I am logged in on Yahoo too.

So once again, people are being given inaccurate information about something so near and dear to most of our hearts and the people who don't know that this is inaccurate information are going to pass it along and it will spread like wildfire and just add more inaccuracies.

I can understand your frustrations Chip,  Even when myself and other's have made incorrect statements/references to Christmas music, whether it be Yule Log related or not.  I myself may be inaccurate in the "roughly 7 minutes" but I don't have time to pop in the DVD of either "A Log's Life" or the one I made from my DVR and time it.

All this misinformation just makes it harder to get the correct information out there for folks and The WPIX Yule Log is something I feel need to be 100% accurate if we want it to continue being on TV for generations to come.

I was trying not to be too critical of the piece, but that's exactly right Susan; the classic film loop that was reshot in Palo Alto California in 1970 was 7 minutes long.

What makes me so angry about senseless errors like this is that they are so preventable. If the folks at Yahoo had done their research properly and consulted my website, then they would have seen that I mentioned the length of the film loop at the very top of my homepage, 3rd paragraph down (
Click here). I'll post it below for everyone's convenience.

The Yule Log.com is a World Wide Web tribute to an annual televised celebration of the Christmas spirit.

The concept of the televised Yule Log is a tradition that originally began in 1966 by New York City's own WPIX-TV.

That famous and glorious 7-minute film loop of that roaring, happy, mesmerizing fire inside that festively decorated mantel piece complimented by the majesty of some of the greatest classic Christmas music ever recorded is indeed the one and only WPIX Yule Log. It has often been imitated, but never duplicated.

As anyone can plainly see, that is pretty hard to miss -- even if one has eyesight like Mr. Magoo. Unfortunately, people are just too much in a hurry today and there just isn't the dedication to detail and accuracy anymore.

As for the other Yule Log fireplace they showed at the beginning of the piece, that was just done for effect. They did indeed show our original Yule Log later in the story, so I won't fault them on that. I also won't fault them for not mentioning the Gracie Mansion rug debacle as the piece was only 1 minute and 34 seconds long; so obviously, considering the time constraints, they couldn't cover everything.

**Edited to add the following:

By the way, I forgot to mention that they were also incorrect in saying that the program was converted to HD in 2004; it was actually in 2003.

Chip,

It's too bad that there couldn't be some legal thing done where if any website that does a story about the Yule Log has to clear it through you.  As you mentioned. WPIX basically directs all interviews from people to you.  All this misinformation just causes confusion and then trying to get something corrected can often be impossible.  I still can't click on the "Comments" link from the story.

Yes, I do realize that they used the video in the beginning for effect, but I think it would be confusing to people who weren't familiar with The Yule Log.

The link now brings you to a Holiday Tradidions  "A Christmas Goat" and you have to scroll down and then click on The Yule Log one.

The station and I only wish that we had that type of control over what is printed or said out there about the program; but alas, the cold hard reality is that we just don't.

Oh, and speaking of interviews, I did two this week: one with NPR (National Public Radio) out of Washington D.C. and one with TV critic David Hinckley of the New York Daily News. David's story will appear in the Christmas Eve edition of the newspaper as well as online on their website. I will post a link to it as soon as it is posted.

That sounds Awesome Chip,

Do you know what day or time the interview with NPR will be on the radio?  I do realize that all NPR Radio Stations don't play the same music, and don't necessarily broadcast all of the NPR progrmas at the same time, but I'm guessing an interview would be sent to all the affiliates for broadcast at their convenience.

We receive NPR on WBFO 88.7  And on WNED 970 AM, but WNED isn't strictly NPR.  It would be interesting to hear the interview.

We do receive The New York Daily News here, but don't get any evening edition.  Do you know then if it would appear in the Christmas Day issue or not?  This way, I could buy one here so I would have the hard copy from the paper itself.

Alas, it is sad but true about not having control over what is said or printed about The WPIX Yule Log.  I just get upset as I know you do and almost irated when very inportant facts about this are incorrectly stated.  Thinking back to Amazon.com about the Yule Log DVD they are selling and I remember bringing it to your attention that someone had done a review of it stating that they remembered watching this on TV when they would younger.   (I'm not quoting what they actually said, but paraphrasing)  Then you went online and posted a comment about it not being The Original WPIX Yule Log.  I feel so sorry for all the people who got duped into buying it believing it was the original.

Unfortunatetly, this misinformation is going to continue, and if you were to try and comment on every article that was published with inaccuracies, you wouldn't have any time for yourself or for the Message Board or anything else for that matter.  It would be nice if these articles would refer people to TheYuleLog.com so that they could get the correct information, but we know that won't happen because it would be considered free advertising, and most places won't do this.

I do try and refer people here when I am able when I am on other Christmas Groups and we happen to be talking about Christmas music and when we were children ourselves.

Thanks Chip,

I hope our NPR FM Station carries the broadcast at the same time.  I'm not sure about our AM one because it's not just NPR as I mentioned previously.

I checked our NPR station schedule for December 24th. and they have the program guide and you can choose the day and time.  According to our stations schedule on the 24th, they will be airing "All Things Considered"  Is there a particular name for the Broadcast?

I would love to be able to hear the interview.

Yes, the Yule Log story will be featured on NPR's All Things Considered program. But a word of caution: not all NPR stations will air it at the time I mentioned in my previous post; to check your local station,

Chip,

I've tried calling our local NPR station, but I have to leave voicemails so I hope someone gets back to me in time so I don't miss it.  As for the Daily News, I don't know that I will be able to get it unless it is in the Christmas Day issue but as I mentioned previously, we don't get the Evening Edition this far from NYC.

One good or NPR Station has a live stream too so I could listen to it while at the computer being my radio is in the bedroom.

Hopefully I won't miss it as sometimes they air things locally earlier than they do on other affiliates.

I went out on my bicycle late this afternoon (don't have a car) to stock up on food for tomorrow, and while riding home listening to "All Things Considered" on my little armband radio, guess whose voice I heard?

Yup!  It was Chip telling about the first time he saw the Yule Log.

Pretty cool, huh?

John,

I listened to it too online via WNYC the New York City NPR station stream, had it abvailable for playback online and I can't say for sure but maybe as a PodCast too.  I didn't want to take a chance that my local NPR station wouldn't broadcast the program at the same time or something else.

I was hoping the interview would've been longer though but they had to put in someone who created his own "Knock-Off" version.  I'm sure there could've been much much more that Chip had to say or they decided only to broadcast part of what he was interviewed for.

My interview with NPR was almost an hour and they used very little as the piece was very short. Unfortunately, that's just how it goes with the media. At least they embedded my video preview of the new fourth hour.

Chip,

I had a feeling that your interview was much longer because I had been listening from beginning of the broadcast and was actually recording it while listening and it was awhile before your interview came up.  They pretty much had on the screen, the text of what was being said.  This was from WNYC's website and I was listening live online and reading along so I had an idea of when your interview would start.

There were a few things before your interview so I stopped the recording to delete those parts and then started up just before what I was reading on the screen was being said on the air and I recorded your interview and then they went into the interview with someone who has been making his own Fireplace video which I mentioned earlier.

They did the same thing with Joe, it wasn't NPR, but I remember him being asked to do an interview for ABC News, I believe, and they pretty much made a mockery of it.  And they butchered it too.  I remember him wanting them to cancel airing it, but they said something that they didn't have time to put anything else in it's place.

Why do an interview about something so near and dear to a lot of people an then not broadcast the entire interview?  Or change the meaning of it.  I can't remember the comment that was made afer Joe's interview, but it wasn't funny, though ABC seemed to think it was.

I'm not sure, but I think the link to that interview was posted here on the message board and I would guess that the link wouldn't take you to the interview, but I think we had made some comments about it too.

I remember Chip,

The details just weren't as accurate and then Joe had decided that he didn't want them to broadcast it or something.  I can't remember if he saw a preview of it or what, or if he felt the same way you did and your reluctance to do the interview, but it was too late.  I'm sorry if my memory of the event isn't accurate as it should be.

I left a comment on ABC's website about what the anchor had said at the end reffering to us and the Yule Log as something, but I can't remember what term they used, and I'm not sure if the post announcing the interview is still on the message board or not.  But I didn't care for the terminology that ABC used.  I think there were a few other comments on ABC's website too in support of The Yule Log.  And again, I'm sure that story doesn't exist on ABC's website anymore.

Without going into detail, that year in 2009 when ABC News did their story they had broken their word to include certain information that they had promised would be included in their story. However, in the end they capitulated.

Chip,

I know it would be of some effort, but it's too bad that either yourself or Joe for that matter, could do some sort of online thing, I can't think of the proper term right now, but the only example I can think of is what Charlie Sheen did online with all his rantings and ravings earlier this year.  It wasn't SKYPE, but something else.

This way, either of you could say exactly what you wanted to say and not have it edited or twisted around in any way.  And all the information you wanted people to know could get out there.  Yes, I guess there would be some idiots out there who might post negative comments, (there may be a way to not allow comments too) but for the devoted Yule Log fans, who wanted to let other people know what the Yule Log is all about, could do so if something like this was done online.

Anyway's, it's just an idea to shoot out there.  I know both yourself and Joe are very busy though.
