Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:10/08/2016 08:13:38Copy HTML Hello Chip and Rick, I too was very curious about who did that remaster on Mantovani's masterpiece Christmas Carol's as well. I have got to say they did a fantastic job on it as well as it is as clean and rich sounding as if were recorded yesterday, but something about that recording facility at Kingsway Hall in London where I assume the stereo version was recorded that gave that orchestra great dymanics and just the right amount of reverb. Of course the amazing arrangements of Mantovani and Cecil Milner have a great deal to do with that magnificent effect as well. Best Regards, Steve

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:10/09/2016 05:04:44Copy HTML Does anyone know if it's better to buy these new releases direct from Real Gone or from Amazon? Didn't know if Real Gone got a better cut direct, or if they prefer the publicity of getting a high-ranking on Amazon? In another 2016 release-related comment, it is my understanding that the 1962 Ray Conniff Christmas LP is going to be released this season on vinyl, but I don't think it's RGM? John |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:10/11/2016 04:43:47Copy HTML Steve: Both the 1953 mono as well as the later superior 1958 stereo version of Monty's Christmas Carols LP were recorded at Kingsway Hall in London (for both the building's fine acoustics as well as the magnificent organ that was housed there). John: Both are fine for ordering the CDs, but orders placed with RGM direct will be filled first when the CDs are received in. And no, it's not RGM that released the new vinyl reissue of Ray's 1962 album, but rather FridayMusic. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

(A BTW:I've noticed, with Headphones, things being bumped around and,at times, even Traffic like a Truck, roaring outside if one hears it-such a sad reminder that, although it was silent at times, even the slightest movement can cause a noise that couldn't be helped, nor be mixed out of the master.) (Another UpdateLJust gotten word it'll be shipped out Tonight,to arrive within a Couple of Days! I also ordered the UK CD of "A Song Of Christmas" too today, with Same Day Shipping!)

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:10/25/2016 02:27:54Copy HTML I'd love to see all three of John Klein's Christmas albums in a 2 disc set (the one on Columbia and the 2 on RCA). I'm lucky to have the Columbia and the first RCA disc but have only ever seen the second RCA disc (which was recorded at the 64/65 New York World's Fair) as a library copy and as an online download. I'm sure you, Chip, and Real Gone would do a proper reissue of this material!

As for this one, The Four Seasons CD, it was released by Real Gone Music last year in 2015. I announced it in Edition #15 of my Chip's Tips column. Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/05/2016 01:52:38Copy HTML Also noticed that the cover of the "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" LP in the booklet was the Friday Music recent vinyl release cover (it lacks the song titles and the lettering is in a slightly different font).
Also on the inside of the back tray card the Friday Music record label is used instead of the original Columbia Records label.... And its too bad the ski lodge cover of "Here We Come A Caroling" wasn't included - I always thought that cover was an improvement over the original cover. Just my opinion. |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/05/2016 02:32:18Copy HTML I know John, I wasn't happy when I saw that. That was actually my Robert Shaw LP cover that I sent to Gordon in Hollywood. I had to FedEx it to him at the last minute, but it was obviously only meant to be used for the Robert Shaw release, not the Conniff. Somehow the printer got it mixed up. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/06/2016 10:04:33Copy HTML Hello Chip, I'm just starting to play through the treasure trove of Christmas albums released by Real Gone Music this year thanks to you and Gordon Anderson's tireless efforts. The Jack Jones Christmas Album remaster is spectacular. Wow, this was not an album I grew up with, but its definitely being added to my definitive holiday collection as it is an absolute gem. I rank it right behind Johnny Mathis's Merry Christmas Album and the Andy Williams Christmas album for its great song choice, brilliant arrangements and the velvety voice of the singer himself. I would also include that amazing John Gary Christmas album you got released last year as well as Nat King Cole's masterpiece, The Christmas Song album in this essential "vocalist" collection of holiday music albums. Mr. Jones version of Sleigh Ride at breakneck speed with a phenomenal brass and string chart by Marty Manning is a joy to listen to with the horn mimicking the horse at the end as in Leroy Anderson's original instrumental version and Jack's own vocal raspberry ending the song as well. What a gas! What a great and underappreciated vocalist Jones is to this day. One of the few legends still with us today from this golden age of Christmas music. I have just started listening to the Living Guitars and Living Strings twofer cd and its a gem as well. Love all the artwork on all these albums, both the original covers and booklets. Oh, and Mantovani's Christmas Carols back cover artwork is splendid and a great improvement on Collectors Choice original artwork and they made it easier to read the song titles. The music that resides within is of course breathtaking and majestic. I ordered five copies of that masterpiece to spread around to the family and have one in reserve for myself. Chip, tremendous thanks for all you your efforts on behalf of the Yule Log which has been expanded once again and a special thanks for getting these holiday masterpieces back to us in all their original glory. Best Regards, Steve |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/07/2016 04:05:19Copy HTML Chip - I have to say that the Real Gone Christmas CD releases this year are fantastic - I bought ten of them and I'm glad that I did !!
Haven't listened to them all yet but did listen to seven of them this afternoon. 1. Mantovani - Christmas Carols : I still have the CCM release and this one pleases just as much. The sound is amazing and I like the new booklet and the London CD label is very cool !! An amazing CD. 2. Robert Shaw Chorale - Christmas Hymns And Carols : Classic album cover and beautiful choral religious Christmas tracks in glorious "living stereo". 3. The Ventures Christmas Album : Nice to have the autographed booklet and this CD really rocks !! GREAT sound on this CD !! I listened to it twice today. 4. The Jack Jones Christmas Album : Great booklet and nice to see the original LP cover on the front of the CD. Mike Milchner did an amazing job remastering this (as he did on The Ventures CD) !! The sound on this CD is exceptional - very "warm" -- this CD sounds the best to me of all the new releases. 5. Sammy Kaye - I Want To Wish You A Merry Christmas : A great nostalgic Christmas CD and Mark Wilder did an excellent job remastering this one as well. I can't believe how GREAT this CD sounds !! A big surprise to me ! 6. Christmas Sing-Along With Mitch - Mitch Miller & The Gang : My favorite so far of all the Real Gone releases this year. Cool seeing the original LP cover on the front of the CD and the old Columbia Records label on the CD looks great as well. The bonus tracks are the winners for me here - I had not heard five of them ever before !! I had heard Be A Santa and Must Be Santa before - interesting hearing the single versions in mono. Season's Greetings and Pine Cones And Holly Berries - GREAT tracks that were among those I had never heard before. Thanks Chip for putting this set together !! 7. Ray Conniff Singers - The Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings : I love that hidden track at the end of CD 2 !!! Conniff has always been in my Top 3 favorite Christmas artists since I was a kid. I love his three Christmas releases - and its cool that this set combines all three along with My Favorite Things ! I was a bit disappointed in the sound quality though - doesn't sound much different than the currently available single CD versions of each album. There are so many standouts on this 2CD set - definitive versions of these Christmas songs in my opinion. Ray's version of Joy To The World - tough to beat - catchy as can be. Frosty The Snowman with the "pop" sound !! Here Comes Santa Claus, Jingle Bells, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, the medleys on the We Wish You A Merry Christmas, etc. Ray Conniff defines Christmas !!! Still have to listen to Eddy Arnold, Living Guitars & Living Strings, and The Norman Luboff Choir. CAN'T WAIT !! Thanks again Chip !!! Rich |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/08/2016 06:49:44Copy HTML It's so nice that I can hear Mantovani's "Christmas Carols" in its correct speed once again,as the Mp3 "CD Rip" Amazon offered runs a step slower..Love the way, too, that Real Gone Music has replicated the Lp Label artwork on the CD Label, authentic in detail! Even the "ffss" logo and all is the same! And the Lp covers front & Back,too-WOW! I love it! A Major Thanks to Gordon Anderson for "Bringing It all Back Home" for us!

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/08/2016 08:30:49Copy HTML The Mantovani CD is by far the "jewel in the crown" of this year's releases. Sadly, after I finally got it back into print in 2009, it subsequently went out of print when Gordon left Collectors' Choice Music. Since then, I have been working to get it back in print with his new Real Gone Music label; and with this year's release, it has far surpassed the original CCM incarnation. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/08/2016 01:54:08Copy HTML Mantovani's CD is quite nice- but when was his "Christmas Bells" song released? After repeated play of the joyful bouncy Ray Conniff Collection, this is the first time that I've been a little disappointed with the re-mastering / audio improvements - the men's vocals sound not as crisp as they once did- like the high EQ was dropped or concessions were made to reduce tape hiss? I'm assuming that they had the original master tapes for the session? I hope next year's jewel "Music of Christmas" doesn't have an issue with the aging old tapes' high frequencies? I was pleasantly surprised at the end of Disc Two and enjoyed the "2-eye" and 70-ish Columbia "labels" on the CD's themselves. I may order the Eddy Arnold CD just for his unique rendition of "Christmas Can't Be Far Away"? The budget is limited to just one more selection this year- what does the "Yule team" recommend? |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/08/2016 04:20:28Copy HTML I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but to reiterate: I very much wanted to add Monty's brilliant original holiday song "Christmas Bells" as a lone bonus track; however, UMG's minimum price for one bonus track is exorbitant. Adding just one bonus track increases the guarantee by 70%. So we had to pass. And to answer your question, the song is from his second Christmas album from 1963, Christmas Greetings From Mantovani. As for the Ray Conniff, I agree; and if it goes to a second pressing, I'd like to give this to Maria Triana to take a crack at. And if you only have enough in your budget for one more purchase this year, I'd definitely recommend the Norman Luboff -- in particular for the second album on the 2fer, 1964's Christmas With The Norman Luboff Choir, which not only resides in the 1st Tier of my Top 500, but in my Ultra Top 10, coming in at #9. *[Edited to correct typo] Lawrence F. Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/20/2016 07:46:50Copy HTML Hello Chip, I noticed on Amazon after posting my very positive review of The Jack Jones Christmas album since its release by Real Gone Music that out of the five new reviews of this magnificent release including mine, two are critical of the sound of the disc with one reviewer even accusing the remastering of the record to be taken from vinyl and not original tape sources. It just really irritates me when an amazing independent record company like Real Gone Music goes to the great effort and expense of remastering these awesome vintage records to the best of their ability that some want to be critic finds what they think is not a great remaster, perhaps because they are not use to listening to remastered albums from this time period or they buy the cd from a private seller or elsewhere, and these get posted early in the review section and discourage future buyers of missing out on a great release. I would like to encourage any of your members of the Yule Log to post a positive review of the Jack Jones Christmas album by Real Gone Music on Amazon even if they have purchased it elsewhere as it is allowed on the site to do so, and of course to do the same for any of the other great releases by Real Gone that came out this year such as the Mantovani Christmas Carols album or the fantastic Norman Luboff Choir Christmas twofer. I know as a long time customer of Amazon I often read several reviews before I make a purchase of an album that is a recently remastered product before making a final decision. Best Regards, Steve

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/21/2016 12:17:06Copy HTML rsteven: sometimes, not always, Amazon combines old reviews of imported scratchy mono vinyl junk from England on the Hallmark label and mixes those old reviews with current new products- this infuriates me as well- I'll have to look at your post and see if the others are dated before this recent release and if we are comparing apples and oranges or if they somehow combined different products - again? That's my 2 cents worth. I've seen it happen before on imports. John |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/21/2016 03:42:17Copy HTML Coming from someone (yours truly) who is deeply involved in the releasing of these CDs, I can tell you unequivocally that the remastering integrity of the Jack Jones and all of the Real Gone Music releases is beyond reproach. The small but strident minority of people who post these negative reviews is unassailable proof that some of these wannabe critics and/or so-called audiophiles have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. One of worst examples of this was what happened in 2015 when some charlatan not only posted an unfounded and unflattering review of the George Melachrino CD, but then went even further by posting some unsavory and insulting remarks about the remastering engineer, Maria Triana. I very rarely file posts on other websites but my own; but I made an exception in this case and quickly came to her defense by posting a fierce rebuttal to that execrable review. Lawrence F. Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/21/2016 05:15:53Copy HTML Hello Chip and Johnny, Yes indeed, there are some real dimwits out there posting ridiculous comments and baseless reviews on amazon periodically and usually they are outweighed heavily by the rest of us music lovers with common sense and a decent ear. I remember well that absolutely idiotic review of the George Melachrino album and particularly that very unfair and almost personal attack on the incredibly beautiful remastering job Maria Triana did on that splendid release. I followed your lead as well Chip and posted my own five star review defending the great remastering job by the brilliant Ms Triana. Maria Triana has got to be one of the best remastering engineers and has even worked on Elvis Presley's catalogue for RCA on some of his box sets with the legendary engineer Vic Anesini who is beloved by Elvis audiophiles all over the world. As you well know Chip, one does not get close to the Elvis masters unless they have impeccable credentials and an amazing track record. The Elvis recording catalogue is probably the most valuable and revered in the business besides the Beatles' master recordings. The Jack Jones Christmas album remastered by the very respected Mike Milchner is extraordinary as well. I find the remastering efforts by Real Gone Music to be superior to any other labels in the business, especially with regard to these great Christmas gems from the late fifties and early sixties. When I see a Christmas re-release is coming from a label other than Real Gone Music, I am almost always slightly disappointed as I know they are unlikely to take the same care in remastering and producing the original art work and have such amazing liner notes. Please help Real Gone Music keep up the great effort in rereleasing these masterpieces from a bygone era and know that your Yule Log members will have your and Real Gones's back when it comes to these efforts. Best Regards, Steve |

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/21/2016 07:11:54Copy HTML I listened to my copy of the Jack Jones Christmas album again, and while it's not a needle drop that someone thinks it is on Amazon, it's sounds to me that it's been remastered from a less than pristine source tape. I'm thinking the original master was probably destroyed in the disastrous Universal Music Group vault fire in 2008, and Real Gone had to use a secondary source.

Re:Upcoming 2016 Real Gone Music Christmas CD Releases Date Posted:11/21/2016 07:40:35Copy HTML Steve: What particularly irked me about that odious reviewer's completely unfounded attack on Maria is that she is as kind a person as the beautiful job she does as a remastering engineer. I just can't brook people who callously and recklessly impugn the professional and personal integrity of a person without any regard whatsoever. Thanks for manifesting your support for Real Gone Music by posting your stellar reviews on Amazon. Christopher: No, thankfully the original master session tapes for Jack's 1964 Christmas LP were not destroyed in the 2008 fire. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri
