Date Posted:10/02/2011 04:46:43Copy HTML As a result of a suggestion that I made for a Star of the Month tribute to classic film's Royal Family, the great Barrymores (John, Ethel and Lionel), TCM chief Charlie Tabesh told me that he thought it was a great idea and that the network would probably do it in the future! If my suggestion does indeed come to fruition someday, I will be most proud that I will have contributed in some small way to the lasting legacy of this great, dynamic and legendary acting family. Posted below is an excerpt from the email that Charlie sent to me yesterday:

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:10/04/2011 07:38:08Copy HTML Without divulging the details of how it came about, I spoke to Robert Osborne earlier today and he is doing quite well, sounding great and thoroughly enjoying his vacation. I just wanted to mention that one of the things that I asked him is if he will continue doing the full wrap-arounds (intros and outros) for the films when he returns to TCM later this fall, and he assured me that he absolutely will! The 'intros only' format that TCM is currently practicing with the guest hosts is only temporary until he returns. So no worries; we will get Robert back 100% when he returns! Oh, and Robert told me that he really liked my Barrymore's Star of the Month suggestion and that he hoped TCM chief Charlie Tabesh will do it! By the way, this December TCM will premiere the fourth installment of their TCM 'Night at the Movies' documentary series. And the big news is that this installment will focus on Christmas Movies! The title will be, TCM Night at the Movies: Merry Christmas! It should be a great special and it will premiere on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 8:00pm (EST), with encore showings that night at 11pm and 5:30am. The special will also encore again on December 18 at 12pm and December 20th at 10pm. Enjoy! Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/19/2016 11:50:23Copy HTML Well it took him 41/2 years to get it done, but TCM programming chief Charlie Tabesh made good on his promise to use my suggestion of doing a TCM month-long tribute to the great Barrymores: John, Ethel and Lionel. And they actually programmed the festival with the exact format recommendation that I had proposed in October of 2011 (see my original post above). The only difference is that instead of the Barrymores being featured as the "TCM Star of the Month," they will be featured as the "TCM Spotlight of the Month" -- and the month for that tribute will be next month in April! The only other difference is that the order of individual spotlights will be Jack Barrymore for Week 1, followed by Lionel for Week 2 and then Ethel for Week 3 (my original order had Jack, Ethel and then Lionel). Week 4 is still dedicated to the films the siblings made together. Posted below is the programming schedule for the movies that are being shown in prime time (with introductions) for the Barrymore TCM Spotlight film festival for April 2016: Week 1; April 4, 2016: John Barrymore - aka The Great Profile Don Juan (1926) A Bill of Divorcement (1932) State's Attorney (1932) The Great Man Votes (1939) Week 2; April 11, 2016: Lionel Barrymore - aka The Great Character Actor One Man's Journey (1933) Treasure Island (1934) Key Largo (1948) Young Dr. Kildare (1938) Week 3; April 18, 2016: Ethel Barrymore - aka The First Lady of the American Stage None But the Lonely Heart (1944) The Spiral Staircase (1945) Pinky (1949) Kind Lady (1951) Week 4; April 25, 2016: John, Ethel and Lionel - aka The Fabulous Barrymores - Hollywood's Royal Family Rasputin and the Empress {with John, Ethel and Lionel} (1932) Grand Hotel {with John and Lionel} (1932) Night Flight {with John and Lionel} (1933) Dinner at Eight {with John and Lionel} (1933) Lionel, Ethel and Jack Barrymore Lawrence F. Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/26/2016 05:54:39Copy HTML Good job Chip- now if you can get TCM to show the original version of "Carol for Another Christmas" with the original Henry Mancini song, that would be excellent too. Happy Easter to all, John |

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/26/2016 04:14:41Copy HTML Glad to see there's at least one classic movie fan/buff on the board, John. The announcement here is a copy of my original announcement on the TCM message board where, of course, it was more fully appreciated being a community of folks who are very fond of and very knowledgeable of classic films from Hollywood's Golden Age. Regrettably, the only thing that most folks know today about the name Barrymore is Drew. And that, sadly, is not saying much. As for the film Carol For Another Christmas, I mentioned previously on the board that I had discussed this with Felice Mancini (Mr. Mancini's daughter) and we are both stumped as to why the print that TCM has in their library does not include her father's original music. As I also mentioned before, it's not because of copyright issues because she and her siblings manage their father's extensive library of music. The most logical reason for the omission that I suggested to her is that the copy of the print that TCM has was probably made before her father was signed on by ABC-TV to compose an original theme for the film. Notwithstanding, this still remains quite a mystery. Happy Easter. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/28/2016 12:26:41Copy HTML I love these great movies myself, but unfortunately, we don't get TCM with our Dish Network package. TCM wants their channel in the higher priced tier, so it isn't available in the lower priced tiers.

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/28/2016 10:56:17Copy HTML There is currently another instance of Henry Mancini's music being omitted.
In the 1970's, Henry Mancini composed the theme song for the opening credits of the NBC Mystery Movie, which usually aired on Sunday nights. Those shows/movies included Columbo, McCloud, and McMillan & Wife. Remember them? And, do you remember that catchy theme song? I'm still a fan of those shows, especially Columbo, and try to catch them in syndication, usually on ME TV or The Hallmark Channel. However, Henry Mancini's theme song is now deleted from the shows. I'm not sure why, maybe a copyright issue? |

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/28/2016 01:50:30Copy HTML No, it's not a copyright issue, but rather a matter of practicality and a lack of necessity as to why the original "NBC Mystery Movie" opening with Henry Mancini's music is no longer used. The shows from this NBC franchise are currently shown in syndication individually and therefore no longer require that original one-minute opening collage which highlighted each show in the franchise. Posted below is the original version of the "NBC Mystery Movie" opening which highlighted the first three original shows in the franchise, Columbo, McCloud and McMillan & Wife; as well as another show that was added later, Quincy. Additional shows were added to the franchise in subsequent years, but none were as successful as the aforementioned four shows -- especially Columbo, which was by far the absolute best. I posted a tribute to Peter Falk in June of 2011when he died via my thread on the board entitled, "My Columbo is dead" (click here). And also posted below (underneath the video of the original televised version of the "NBC Mystery Movie" opening) is a version created by an avid fan which has the full version of Henry Mancini's original theme song. It not only highlights Columbo, McCloud, McMillan & Wife and Quincy, but also two other shows that came later in the franchise, Hec Ramsey and Banacek. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VDK7uXLZsj4?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xt0RyRPBuMo?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Lawrence F. Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/28/2016 03:42:34Copy HTML Max Cherry & Chip, Interesting that the (NBC) Sunday Night Mystery Movie theme would come-up. Probably my most sought-after recording (other than the wait for Columbia Records to properly re-master "Music of Christmas" by Percy Faith) was to obtain the LP "Big Screen, Little Screen" by Henry Mancini. This LP had my two favorite Mancini TV themes on it- both shows aired in 1971-1972, and those shows were "Cade's County" and the "Mystery Movie". I never found the LP, only some 45's, but found a CD of it from Italy in the 80's. RCA (and its successors) finally released a nice Mancini remastered CD: "Midnight Moonlight & Magic: The Very Best of Henry Mancini". My 2 favorite theme songs remastered at last! And thank heavens for "Me-TV" showing these well-produced Universal Pictures shows. Regards, John |

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/28/2016 06:26:40Copy HTML It's commendable that Me TV and the Hallmark Channel are airing these classic NBC Mystery Movies, but the problem is that they butcher them to death. The shows are so edited down just so they can air more of their lousy commercials that it is hard for me to watch. I know each Columbo episode by heart and every time I notice a piece of the show that's been cut I get extremely annoyed. Thankfully, I have the entire Columbo series on DVD with each episode completely uncut and unedited. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/29/2016 01:13:09Copy HTML Chip,
No pun intended, but I feel it is a crime for TV Networks to cheat/rob us of enjoying our favorite programs out of their entirety, so they can add more commercials. Sometime, just a few seconds of dialog, can change the whole meaning of what is going on. I remember back in the 1980's that on reruns, they would speed them up just a little, so you wouldn't notice it unless you were really concentrating on the dialog, but often the music in the background was a little faster, so they could fit more commercials in. I believe that there was a discussion on the message board about WKRP in Cincinnati that was released on DVD, not having the original songs from the program on the DVD because of Music Licensing or something, and maybe it was a Christmas song where they changed the song from the one that originally aired. Again, it is a crime that they do this to the consumer. We buy the programs on DVD, and get gypped out of viewing the programs the way we remember them. Even with movies that are released, they put advertisement in them, mostly about other movies that are coming out, but you can't bypass them by pressing the menu or disc menu buttons on the remote, so they are forcing us to watch something we don't want to see. It was the same with Video Tapes, but you could fast forward through them. I know someone who used to buy actual moves on film, either 16mm or 33mm, and they didn't have any commercials in them, just the actual movie print. My point is we either watched the programs when they aired, so we had to watch the commercials, or we paid to see a movie at the Drive-In or Movie Theater, and had to watch previews, so why should we have to watch this stuff again? Then since we are paying for the programs on DVD, which are supposed to be the entire series, then why can't we get them the way they aired without any deleted scenes or music? Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/29/2016 06:28:48Copy HTML Susan & Chip: Thank goodness for companies like "Real Gone Music" and "Shout! Factory" that re-release old music and TV shows respectively. I was pleased to get the "Shout!" DVD set of 'WKRP in Cincinnati' as they restored as much as possible of the video that had been cut-out for syndication. And you are correct Susan, some musicians and/or publishing companies refused to negotiate reasonable royalties for just a 15 second snippet of their song being used, so some scenes were re-edited in syndication to the point where it made no sense in some situations with a chunk missing, or even dialogue changed because the song was altered! The DVD set has over 85% of the original music licensed, and what a difference having the shows nearly identical to their original showing. They couldn't find only one partial segment of one show, and had an alternate ending of an episode that wasn't seen since it first aired; AND, the Christmas music from the Living Voices made the release! Glad you've got the whole 'Columbo' set Chip- my favorite is when the record player assisted in the crime! (Was it this episode that the butler references Johnny Carson's 'Tonight Show' several times, and they recreate the crime scene, or am I getting 2 episodes mixed-up?) Regards, John |

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/29/2016 10:06:38Copy HTML Susan: That's exactly correct: just a few seconds of dialogue deleted from a scene can indeed change the whole meaning of what's going on. And yes, very regrettably, some networks do indeed speed up programs just to get even more commercials in. And regarding some DVDs; yes, it's absolutely criminal the way some of them have a mandatory string of commercials at the beginning that you have to sit through and can't even bypass by using the remote functions. You pay for the DVD only to have to sit through their lousy advertisements. Luckily, I don't have too many that do this -- but even one is one too many. John: That Columbo episode you were thinking of where the record player plays a role in solving the crime was "The Bye-Bye Sky High I.Q. Murder Case," which starred Theodore Bikel who just died last year. The episode you had confused it with was "Forgotten Lady," which starred Janet Leigh. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/30/2016 01:23:41Copy HTML Chip,
Though it would be an extra expense, I guess one could rip the DVD and then edit out those annoying commercials, and make a DVD without them, but it is basically pointless. I think that there should be a way to get the movie companies to sell the consumer just the movie. After all, that is what we are paying for. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ John, I have purchased a few Shout Factory DVD's, and they are usually really good at giving the consumer the full episodes. One of my favorite cartoons from the 1960's is "The Milton the Monster Show" and they released the entire series on DVD awhile back. I hadn't seen this since my childhood, with the exception of a few clips on YouTube with the opening and closing themes, but the quality was very poor, so it was really great to get the series on DVD. I don't know if either of you have noticed that either RetroTV or Throwback TV Network has been replacing the opening and closing theme music for Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies with a "Sound alike" Flatt and Scruggs riff. I called them about this and they said it was because of having to pay royalties for the music. They told me that it is current musicians playing in the style of Flatt and Scruggs. I remember when TVLand would air these programs, they used the actual opening themes. It's a shame that these shows can't use the actual themes anymore, and in most cases, the artists are long since deceased. Another pet peeve I have is with a lot of the old Max Fleischer, Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising, etc., cartoons, even though they are mostly "Public Domain" in the opening scenes, for instance, if the background is red, they will cover the "Copyright" information with the same color. Then to top things off, I have mentioned this before that a lot of Classic TV Networks are now ending a program with a split screen while the credits are playing, they will start the next program and you can't hear the theme song. All of this just to get in that extra commercial or two. It is totally ridiculous. +++++++++++++++++ Chip, I apologize for getting off-topic. Christmas Isn't Just A Day In December, It's A Way Of Life.

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/30/2016 01:23:47Copy HTML Hi Skip- Thanks for getting the Columbo episodes untangled for me- I'm going by memory from the very first (or 2nd) time they aired on NBC. Actually, I recall reading in TV Guide in the day, that they showed one episode 3 times in the same season. Speaking of Theodore Bikel, CCM released a folk album of his on CD which I purchased just to get the one song of his that appeared on the red 'Grant's Store' Christmas LP. Regards, John |

Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/30/2016 07:40:45Copy HTML Susan: I don't have either Retro TV nor Throwback TV so I didn't know that they had substituted the opening and closing theme music for these shows with something else; but I'm sorry to hear that they did. I wish they would just leave these shows alone and stop altering and butchering them to death. By the way, speaking of the Petticoat Junction theme song, it was that cool snare drum solo in the middle of the song that inspired me to take up drums in the ‘60s. It only lasts about 3 seconds long, but it did the trick and I was hooked. For those too young to be familiar with the show and its theme song, it comes in at about 28 seconds into the video below. And no need to apologize for getting off topic; sometime threads do. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/J9CVL3pxD-k?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> John: That song you were referring to, Sweetest Dreams Be Thine, is one of my favorites on the Grants album. And yes, Gordon had released the original album by Theodore Bikel that the song came from, Songs Of The Earth, on CD when he was with CCM. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dEtAuG1GvNA?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Lawrence F. Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:03/31/2016 06:35:28Copy HTML Yes, that's the print that aired in 1964. That guy on YouTube who posted it obtained it from the same source that I got mine (click here), as it is the only source available for the movie -- something that Felice Mancini didn't even know until I told her. The only difference between the print with Mr. Mancini's music and the print that TCM has been airing is the first 90 seconds of the movie. The background scenes for the opening credits of the TCM print are the same; although, a bit shortened and, of course, there is different music. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xhQri14A0LU?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Lawrence F. Re:TCM to possibly use my Barrymore’s film festival suggestion! Date Posted:04/01/2016 04:11:05Copy HTML Chip,
If I am able to DVR and rip the "riff" from these channels, I will try to make a small video of them. To me, if I hadn't known, it sounds just like Flatt & Scruggs, but it is more recent. I wasn't able to see the YouTube video of Carol for Another Christmas because it has been blocked already for Copyright reasons by YouTube. I never got into the drums, but in school, I played the Viola, Violin and Cello, and self taught myself to play the guitar, but can't do full bar chords, because my index finger can't fit across all of the strings and press hard enough. I play the piano/keyboard, but can't really read sheet music. I know what the notes are, but just can't seem to play them as a chord without first having to take the time to figure out each note. Then with the melody, I can play a 1-note for each, but not usually the 2-notes at the same time. I have a fairly good ear for music, and know immediately when I make a mistake. I can often hear a song once and start playing the melody right off the bat. Christmas Isn't Just A Day In December, It's A Way Of Life.
