I just noticed this upcoming release from Real Gone Music is coming out on November 4.  It contains the entire contents of the 1963 album This Christmas I Spend with You and the 1968 album Robert Goulet's Wonderful World of Christmas, as well as three duets he recorded with his wife Carol Lawrence, and both sides of a promotional single he recorded for the Christmas Seals charity.  A definite purchase for me.

Sorry, Chip, I guess I missed it.   This is definitely the biggest "must-buy" of the season for me.  Maybe next year they can do the same thing for Jack Jones and make my 2015 Christmas season too.

I'm surprised you missed it because after posting the announcement on August 29th I sent a group email out to all board members advising of the post and even providing a link to it. I checked the group email list and you are definitely on it. Perhaps it went to a spam folder. I'd hate to think these emails I send out are going to people's spam folders. Oy vey...

The strange thing is that I did read the email.  I remember the announcement about Frank DeVol, but I don't remember seeing anything about Robert Goulet.  Who knows...maybe I rushed to look up the DeVol listing and didn't finish reading the rest.  I have no idea how I missed the bit about the Goulet release.

It's too bad that Bob and Carol didn't record an entire Christmas album together, in the same way that fellow husband and wife singing team Steve Lawrence and Eydie
Gormé did in 1964. I think it would have been great.

The one thing that caught my attention about Mr. Goulet's 1963 Christmas album (I never heard the other one) was that unlike so many other Columbia recordings made during the late 1950s and early to mid 1960s, the famous Columbia "sound" - that rich, cathedral-like, "wet," coated in reverb sound - was not as prominent as it was in other recordings. Unlike so many other Columbia recordings, Mr. Goulet's recordings sound amazingly "dry" which was kind of unusual when you recall the sound captured on so many other Columbia releases during that time. This is not a knock or criticism towards Mr. Goulet recordings as much as it is a minor technical observation from an old audiophile.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Robert Goulet set.  I would have loved a whole Goulet/Lawrence album, but for now I'm just thrilled to be getting their duet of "Christmas Waltz" - a wonderful recording that for some reason never seemed to show up on the endless Columbia compilation CDs.  I only know of it from the Goodyear "Great Songs of Christmas, Vol 8" that my Dad used to play when I was growing up.
Another fond childhood memory for me and my siblings is Goulet's recording of "Home for the Holidays" - we used to love his ad libs as the track fades out: "Hey mama, bake that pumpkin pie! I'll have a little pot of chicken in the sky. There's somethin' in my eye! Oh, mama, please keep me dry! Whoa, I'm swinging on home for Christmas..."

Unfortunately, this is lost on many releases and compilations because the fade occurs too quickly.  RichD - how is this handled on the Real Gone release?  I hope they went easy on the fade and left some of that in - it's a lot of fun.

It is intact and plays exactly as it did on the original 1968 LP.

All remastering for Real Gone CD releases is completely respectful to the integrity of the original recording. There is no remixing, altering or "playing around" with these recordings when they are remastered. I have stressed that many times in the past here on this message board.

Sean Brennan (who did the remastering for the Robert Goulet release) and all of the engineers at Battery Mastering Studios here in New York do a straight remastering job that is completely true to the integrity of the original recording.

Re:Robert Goulet - The Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings

Chip,

Going back to the origins of Mr. Goulet's 1963 Christmas album.....I know that Columbia Records used numerous facilities across the country for their recording sessions, especially in NYC  like "The Church" at 30th St; the 49th St studios at the CBS Building; the old 7th Ave Studio A where I believe Dylan recorded his early material for John Hammond. Of course there were other studios outside of NYC like Owen Bradley's legendary Quonset Hut in Nashville that CBS purchased in the early 60s; and Radio Recorders out in California. The one thing these studios all had in common was the ability to create and capture the famed Columbia "sound" I mentioned earlier. The Columbia "sound" was usually so consistent that if you didn't know where the material was actually recorded, much of what Columbia was recording and releasing all sounded like it could have come out of the same studio!  I'm not familiar with most of Mr. Goulet's recordings but the recordings on "THIS CHRISTMAS I SPEND WITH YOU" (c. 1963) definitely have a different "ambience" to them and sound way more intimate than most of what Columbia was releasing at the time.

My question is this: Ever since it was first released in '63, did Columbia ever release or re-release this album with any added reverberation like a lot of other labels sometimes did with some of their releases? Would you be so kind as to give some technical session details (recording dates, studio, recording engineer, orchestra) concerning the first Robert Goulet Christmas album? I'd appreciate any info you can share.

Anthony,

The album was recorded at Columbia's Sunset Boulevard Studio (1st floor), located at 6121 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, California, in a 3-day recording session in July of 1963. The producer was Jim Foglesong; and the arranger/conductor was Frank Hunter.

All reissues were the same as the originally released 1963 LP.

My copy is in transit and should be in my hands later this week.  I can't wait to fire it up for the holidays.  I wanted to preorder it last month, but my cat got really sick and the extensive vet bills kind of wiped me out.  I'm glad to hear all the reviews are so positive.  Real Gone has yet to disappoint me with any of their Christmas releases.

We too waited longer than usual to order additions to our Christmas CD collection but we received them earlier this week and are very happy with our choices, among them are the Real Gone releases by DeVol, Brothers Four, Williams Brothers, and Robert Goulet. Mr. Goulet is one of my wife's favorites so it was a "must" and we have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it after having retired our vinyl copy of This Christmas I Spend With You. We do not have a copy of Wonderful World of Christmas so that was a nice bonus, as were the three duets with Carol Lawrence. Hope this release is as enjoyable as you had hoped.

Jeff

I received my copies of Real Gone Music's Percy Faith, Robert Goulet, and Frank DeVol Christmas CDs yesterday, and am looking forward to listening to them. I am also looking forward to reading Chip's liner notes.

Just an FYI in case anyone was unaware of this recent discovery available on the streaming versions of this collection...

https://theseconddisc.com/2023/11/25/the-weekend-stream-christmas-2023/

We already announced this one a few weeks back, but it's so nice, we've included it twice! Way back in 2014, TSD's own Joe Marchese compiled Robert Goulet's Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings release on CD for Real Gone Music, bringing together the late actor-singer's two full-length Christmas albums plus rare singles and a trio of tracks recorded with his then-wife, Carol Lawrence - all beautifully remastered by Sean Brennan at Battery Studios. While the collection included every holiday track then catalogued in Columbia Records' inventory, it turns out that one rarity was never properly documented and slipped between the cracks. "The Secret of Christmas" was composed by the Oscar-winning team of Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen for the 1959 film Say One for Me. Bing Crosby introduced the ballad in the Frank Tashlin-directed comedy and on record (for Columbia, natch). Though it never entered the most-recorded tier of Christmas songs, Johnny Mathis, Ella Fitzgerald, Captain and Tennille and Julie Andrews all cut versions of their own. Goulet recorded his lush, heartfelt rendition (perhaps at the tail end of a session with Lawrence) - truly the sound of Christmas! - and it was promptly shelved for reasons unknown.

In 1978, the track showed up on a 6LP box set from Columbia Special Products with the nondescript title of The Music of Christmas. Incorrectly credited to both Goulet and Lawrence, it disappeared again...until now. Big kudos to Second Disc reader Rich D. for bringing "The Secret of Christmas" to our attention when he discovered it on the now-rare box set (so rare that a copy has never been sold on Discogs, and the album wasn't even listed on the site until recently). Our truly amazing friends at Legacy Recordings (thank you, Jeff and co.!) scoured the archives and found the pristine master which now makes its digital debut as a 30th track on the digital edition of The Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings. Enjoy this moving gift from the late Robert Goulet to you; it may well be the finest recording of the song, and it's happily a secret no more.

Thanks for the heads up, Jack. I just bought a digital copy on Amazon. Fantastic! If Real Gone ever adds it to a reissue of The Complete Columbia Christmas Recordings, I'll rebuy it in a heartbeat.
