I have been a fan from my youth of the old Goodyear and Firestone  series of LPs,  I have them all on LP.
Recently as I wandered thru the internet and all the digital  sites such as Rhapsody, Spotify, etc.   I found a digital / CD release called Christmas with Julie Andrew and Andre Previn.   I looked at the track list it was a dead ringer for Firestone #5.   I downloaded it at 320kbs,  listened to it, compared track lengths etc.   It was identical  but oh so much better than the old LP rip I made.

So it got me thinking and asking.   Does anyone else know of new CDs/Digital  releases that are out there that are identical too or close to the old Goodyear and Firestone stuff?  The Firestone might be easier since their first seven or so typically were with a single artist.   The Goodyear series tended to be with VA.

I am currently working to get the Goodyear and Grants LPs released on CD via Gordon Anderson's Real Gone Music label.

Securing the licensing for use of the "Grants" name won't be a problem as they are long out of business; however, securing the licensing for use of the "Goodyear" name will be more problematic.

My proposal to Gordon for 2015 would be a double CD release of the best Goodyear album (1967's The Great Songs Of Christmas, Volume 7coupled with the best Grants album (1967's A Very Merry Christmas, Volume 1).

Here's how I would promote the release:

1967: The great year of the two best retail store sponsored Christmas compilation albums of all-time: Goodyear's The Great Songs Of Christmas, Volume 7 and Grants' A Very Merry Christmas, Volume 1.

Hopefully, with the cooperation of Goodyear and Sony Music, we can make this release happen for Christmas 2015.

Wow if this takes it could be very interesting.    I have all the Goodyear/Firestone/Grant/True Value  and on and on in vinyl.  But while all good listenable stuff some are  ah  used.   Having real clean versions of these would be  nice.

It could be like the good old days where the day after Thanksgiving you went to the Goodyear store, the Firestone store,  Grants etc,   plunked down your dollar and got this years LP.   Guessing plunking down a dollar wont work with this,  but going to the local Target or what ever and getting a new version of year 1967  or whatever they choose to do in years future    exceptional.

+1!!!

BTW, is the Goodyear licensing problematic enough to not be able to release each in it's own complied complete set?

The licensing issue is the same no matter how they are released.

One thing to take into consideration regarding 'Great Songs of Christmas' albums is that in some cases, there were unique mixes of songs, different from their original counterparts.  They were generally made shorter to accommodate more tracks on the album.  (A couple of examples of this are Percy Faith's "Adeste Fidelis" on the first GSC, and "The Christmas Song" by Johnny Mathis on Album Six.) This may not apply to Album Seven, and I don't know if it applies to the Grants album(s), but it's worth checking into.  If people are expecting CD versions of the albums they love, they'll be expecting the same version of each song.

Goodyear Album Seven only has one song on it that was edited; but since it's by John Davidson, it's no great loss. Grants did not edit songs on their compilations.

Yes, it appears that John Davidson,'s The First Noel was significantly shorter on Goodyear's Volume 7.

The song's cut by just over a minute: the original version is 2:46; and the abridged version on Album Seven is 1:44.

Chip:
As I wait for all six of the 2017 Real Gone releases to get to me this week, I'm looking into next year and hoping that you and Real Gone Music gain cooperation from Goodyear and Sony for 2018. Those two albums would be spectacular to have remastered.

Rodney,

We tried in 2015: Gordon put in for the project, but unfortunately, Sony couldn't get copyright clearance from Goodyear.

Well, that is disappointing.
Thanks for letting me know, and an even bigger thanks for all you do for keeping the music of Christmas alive!

I plan to make another push for it sometime down the line, but it's probably unlikely in the end that we'll be granted licensing. And it's too bad, because the 2fer CD that I proposed of Goodyear Volume 7 with Grants Volume 1 would have made for a spectacular release.

Another edited track in the Goodyear series is Tony Bennett's rendition of "What Child Is This?", from Volume 8. It only took 43 years for the full-length version to see the light of day, on Bennett's Classic Christmas Album compilation CD.

Yes, and it's always been a mystery why Sony never included the song as a bonus track on their CD reissue of Tony's Snowfall LP. It was more than likely a licensing problem with Goodyear; the same problem we're having.

I have always wondered what happened to Steve Lawrence's "Twas the Night Before Christmas."  I thought it would be a bonus track on the re-release of the Steve/Eydie "That Holiday Feeling" album.  It hasn't even shown up on a random various artists CD that CBS put out over the years (and those are starting to disappear as well).  Ah, the hidden treasures of Christmas records....

I've talked about this on the board before, but just to reiterate: When Steve and Eydie first released their 1964 Christmas album That Holiday Feeling on CD through their private GL Music record label, I had mentioned to Steve Lawrence about adding "‘Twas The Night Before Christmas" as an additional bonus track. In addition, there's also Steve's solo rendition of "Go Tell It On The Mountain," as well as Eydie's solo rendition of "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear," which were both recorded in 1969 exclusively for RCA's Christmas In New York, Vol. 3. He said he'd look into it, but unfortunately nothing ever came of it.

Their GL Music reissue CD is now being distributed through Real Gone Music.
