Here is the official 2009 press release for this year’s broadcast of the WPIX Yule Log and the addition of the new 4th hour of music. Much of the text regarding the specifics of the newly created 4th hour was culled from information that I provided to WPIX for this press release. My full statement and overview of the new 4th hour that I added to the program is available for you to read in its entirety in my announcement post on the message board, click here.

THE WPIX Yule LOG

CELEBRATES 43 YEARS

PIX TO AIR THE YULE LOG ON DECEMBER 25

FROM 9am to 1pm

23 NEW SONGS ADDED TO THE PROGRAM’s FOURTH HOUR

NEW YORK, December 16, 2009 – It wouldn’t be a holiday in New York without The WPIX Yule Log! The Yule Log, the famous film loop of a burning log in a hearth, has warmed the hearts of` viewers since it debuted on PIX in 1966. To celebrate the Log’s 43rd anniversary, PIX will air The Yule Log from 9am-1pm on Christmas morning, Friday, December 25th. At 1pm, immediately following The Yule Log, PIX will air the beloved holiday classic, March of the Wooden Soldiers.

For early risers, The Yule Log will also air from 4-6am on Christmas morning.

This year, with the assistance of Lawrence F. “Chip” Arcuri (Christmas musicologist and webmaster of theYuleLog.com) PIX has added an entirely new fourth hour to the Christmas morning program, including 23 classic holiday songs. The new fourth hour (which begins at 12 noon on 12/25) leads off with Mantovani’s interpretation of Adeste Fideles, a classic that aired on the Yule Log in the late 1960’s; now restored back to the program. The new hour also boasts 9 new artists to the program with 7 who have never appeared on the Yule Log before; including Bert Kaempfert, Mitch Miller, Bing Crosby, Sammy Kaye, Vic Damone, Johnny Mathis and Mike Douglas.

The Log will also be offered with downloadable elements including wallpaper and a “portable” Log at www.wpix.com/yulelog.  This year viewers can follow the Yule Log on twitter @PIXYULELOG and become a fan of the Official Yule Log on facebook! (PIXYuleLog) Log merchandise (including “Nice Log!” and “That’s HOT!” boxer shorts) can be found at: http://www.wpix.com/marketplace/cafepress/

In recent years, The Yule Log has been digitally re-mastered and fully restored. In 2001 the original film was color corrected and cleaned of scratches.  In 2003, the Log was up-converted to High Definition and PIX now airs The Yule Log in HDTV.  In 2006 to celebrate the Log’s 40th anniversary, Lawrence F. “Chip” Arcuri and Joe Malzone, the creators of theyulelog.com, restored the audio of The Yule Log for PIX and today The Yule Log continues to serve its long tradition as a holiday card to PIX viewers.

The Yule Log can be seen on PIX and PIX-DT on December 25th from 4-6am, then PIX Morning News will air from 6-9am with the full Yule Log airing 9 am-1pm ET (with closed captioning available.)

In addition, the WPIX Yule Log will be airing on the following Tribune Broadcasting Stations:

WGN Chcago will be running the program between 2:30 AM and 7 AM.  Will they be receiving the 4th hour as well?  What will run during the final half hour?

Other than the crazy hour, I'm very happy for Chicagoland viewers that they will see the WPIX Yule Log.  A DVR will be most welcome there!

According to the Program Guide on DirecTV we will only be receiving 3 hours on Christmas morning from 8:00 - 11:00.  We don't receive WGN, but instead receive WGN America and don't always get what WGN airs or at the same time.

I already have my DVR set to record the 3 hour broadcast.  I haven't seen anything for "A Log's Life" but it would be good to see that again too.

No Frank, WGN-9 in Chicago will not be airing the new 4th hour. Like their sister station, WGN America, it was just too late for them to add the new 4th hour to their schedule for this year's broadcast.
