While hunting around for some “different” and obscure orchestral and chorale Christmas music, I came across the following albums that are really quite good and enjoyable - other than David Rose I’d never heard of any of these before but these are very, very good LP’s from the classic Christmas music era !

In my Top 500, of those nine albums: one resides in the 2nd Tier; one resides in the 3rd Tier; four reside in the Bubbling Under section; one resides in the Notable Mentions section; and the other two didn't make my Top 500 and reside in my archives.

I like the old school classic photography and artwork- I assume much of the music is unique too?

I have several of these in my archives.  I particularly like the one by the Augustana College,  why because they are located where I grew up,  so I am a homer on that one.   There music from this LP is found on a number of the compilation LPs in the mid 60s,  especially the ones sponsored by some commercial product or organization.  Their version of Come to the Manager being one track that is found scattered about.

I'm a fan of the Peter Wood Singers.

The diecut cover is a really nice touch.

And I borrowed the image for FaLaLaLaLa.

 Hi all,

Although probably not obscure, the Hollywood Pops Orchestra had several Christmas songs that would end-up on different Capitol Records Christmas compilation LP's. Did a Christmas LP of theirs get released and did Real Gone ever issue a CD of the Hollywood Pops Orchestra and collect all of their Christmas tunes?

Kind Regards,

John

The Hollywood Pops Orchestra's Christmas album entitled, Great Instrumental Christmas Music, was released in 1968 by Capitol Records. The album resides in the 3rd Tier of my Top 500, coming in at #272. It has never been released on CD by Real Gone Music and, at this point, would be quite difficult now that UMG is Capitol Records' parent company as a result of their acquisition of EMI in 2012.

I have the Hollywood Pops Orchestra LP too - it's pretty good. Copies show up on eBay periodically -- there's a copy of it on there now.

I first heard of the Hollywood Pops Orchestra from their several cuts that appeared on the budget Christmas With Glen Campbell LP -- I never realized that they did an entire album until years later (I was only 10 back in 1971 when the Glen Campbell LP came out ! haha).

John - I really like the Gene Lowell Chorus LP and the Columbia Choir 10" LP -- nice classic 50's/60's Christmas sound to them. Ditto for the Augustana Choir LP.

The others are all pretty good as well. Was just hunting for some new Christmas music and these came highly recommended.

Chip - Thanks for the chart info on these LP's !!! I think it's great that you ranked so many of these among your top Christmas LP's of all time !
