Date Posted:01/28/2010 03:23:32Copy HTML Which 2 or 3 of Percy Faith's non-holiday music LP's are most worth my checking out?
I should add that I do have a certain weakness for string based arrangements of popular standards and movie songs of the 50s and 60s. |

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:01/29/2010 05:07:51Copy HTML The very first one that I would recommend is Themes For Young Lovers, which is the single best non-holiday music LP that Percy Faith ever recorded. This album is 1 of the only 10 Percy Faith LPs that Columbia/Sony chose to print themselves on CD over the years. However, of these 10, they have since leased out the printing rights for 6, which means that there are only 4 Percy Faith LPs that Columbia/Sony has never leased out the printing rights: Music Of Christmas, Hallelujah (aka Music Of Christmas, Volume 2), Christmas Is and Themes For Young Lovers. And of these 4, sadly, 2 of them are now out of print: Hallelujah (aka Music Of Christmas, Volume 2) and Themes For Young Lovers. Not to worry, though, as you have two options in obtaining Themes For Young Lovers: you can purchase a new or used copy of the original domestic release from a private vendor on Amazon, or it is available as an import from Japan: Themes For Young Lovers (new and used copies of the original domestic release from private vendors on Amazon) Themes For Young Lovers (import from Japan) As for the rest of Mr. Faith's music library (a total of 76 albums), the printing rights have been leased out to Collectables Records and Taragon Records. Here's what I recommend to start: More Themes For Young Lovers (on a double CD that includes Latin Themes For Young Lovers) Themes For The In Crowd (on a double CD that includes Bim Bam Boom) The Beatles Album (on a double CD that includes Jesus Christ Superstar) Lawrence F. Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:01/29/2010 03:23:08Copy HTML I thank you once again, good sir :)
Actually my options may be wider since I am willing to purchase LPs which may be out of print. The technology to transfer LPs to CD-R has been a personal boon to me and my LP collection. You have given me a great start on collecting the best of Mr. Faith's non-Christmas albums, Chip. thanks again ! John |

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:04/24/2010 11:23:02Copy HTML I'm partial to Faith's Bouquet album from 1959, with its lush string arrangements. The Collectables label reissued it as a nice twofer CD with the equally excellent 1962 "sequel", Bouquet of Love.

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:04/25/2010 03:29:09Copy HTML Yes, Bouquet is one of Percy Faith's absolute best. It is 1 of the 2 certified gold albums he had; the other one, of course, being Themes For Young Lovers. Bouquet and Jealousy are tied as the second highest charting albums Mr. Faith had on Billboard's Top Pop Albums chart (they both reached #7). Ironically, Camelot was his highest charting album; it peaked at #6, although it never attained gold status. Another irony is that even though Themes For Young Lovers only reached #12 on Billboard's chart, it was his biggest selling non-holiday album of all-time. It was also by far his longest charting album -- at 36 weeks, while Camelot charted for 23 weeks, Bouquet for 17 weeks and Jealousy for 15 weeks. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:04/09/2011 01:00:53Copy HTML I picked up Percy Faith Columbia Singles Volume 1 1950-51 and Volume 2 1952-58 and was surprised at all the vocals.
A nice recent discovery is the song "Love Theme From Mary Queen Of Scots (This Way Home)" from the twofer CD Joy/Day By Day. Plus, I always liked "Rhythm Of The Rain" and "My Coloring Book" from Themes For Young Lovers. [When I was a kid, I used to think "My Coloring Book" was a bit of a Christmas song. Perhaps somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind is a latent memory of being out Christmas shopping with my parents and hearing that song. That's entirely possible since both the Kitty Kallen and Sandy Stewart songs came out at Christmastime in 1962.] Jim in Philly

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:04/22/2011 11:08:31Copy HTML I have a newfound appreciation for Percy Faith due to this site. Reading the entrees here, it looks like (or sounds like) I should get Bouquet, Themes For The In Crowd, and The Beatles Album if I want to start a definitive collection. Looking over the song selections, I think I may like Great Folk Themes/American Serenade with "500 Miles" and "Michael." And, of course, I would have to get Summer Place '76 for "Soleado (When A Child Is Born)".
www.oldies.com has better prices than amazon. The twofer CDs all appear to be $9.73, but there's a $5.98 shipping charge. (At least it's a flat rate that doesn't penalize you for the more you buy). Now I'm wondering, though, if it would be better to get the 3-volume Only The Best Of box sets which contain 6 of these twofer CDs each for $51.98. That may be the route to go rather than buying them individually. Jim in Philly

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:04/23/2011 12:50:36Copy HTML Jim, If you are really looking to start a definitive Percy Faith regular (non-holiday) album collection, then you missed the most important one: Themes For Young Lovers. As I had previously mentioned in my very first post on this thread (please scroll up to read), the essential non-holiday Percy Faith collection begins with this album. The title song from the album, Theme For Young Lovers, was originally released in 1960 and hit #35 on the Billboard charts. It was re-recorded and released in 1963 on a full-length album with 11 other love songs and entitled Themes For Young Lovers. This album reached #12 on the Billboard charts and was Mr. Faith's biggest selling non-holiday album of all-time. It was also by far his longest charting album -- at 36 weeks. (Camelot charted for 23 weeks, Bouquet for 17 weeks and Jealousy for 15 weeks.) By the way, Themes For Young Lovers is the only non-holiday album of the "precious four" Percy Faith albums that Columbia Records (Sony Music) has never leased out the printing rights for. The other three albums in this sacred and elite group are Mr. Faith's legendary Christmas albums Music Of Christmas, Hallelujah (aka Music Of Christmas, Volume 2), and Christmas Is. Sadly, of these four albums, two of them are now out of print: Hallelujah (aka Music Of Christmas, Volume 2) and Themes For Young Lovers. For anyone who is regrettably not familiar with Percy Faith's legendary album Themes For Young Lovers, I have posted its two best songs below. The first is the classic title song from the album; the great hit single, Theme For Young Lovers. Percy's glorious string section really shines through on this beautiful and poignant song: Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:04/23/2011 01:55:58Copy HTML Hi Jim,
I try to read each new thread, as I don't subscribe to everyone. If I did, I would be getting emails every day telling me that someone responded to one of the subscribed threads. But by not subscribing to all the threads, if someone were to do a different topic under PERCY FAITH: THE GREAT MASTER & MAESTRO - Non-Christmas Percy Faith after your post, I may miss some responses. I had done a post once and Chip responded, but what happened was someone else had started a new thread under the same group and I didn't see Chip's reply so I had to click on the main link for where the thread was and the reply was there. So I do occasionally miss a post someone may have done. But I did want to let you know that yes I did see this last post and do remember talking about Time-Life Instrumental Favorites. Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:08/24/2011 06:49:25Copy HTML We've had a miserable, gloomy summer in Seattle this year, with precious few sunny warm summer-like days. But on the few summery days we've had, when I set out for a ride on my bike, I play "Theme From a Summer Place" on my MP3 player, and that really puts me in the mood to enjoy what little we've had of a summer so far. If the forecast is to be believed it does seem that we may finally have left the foggy, overcast mornings behind us and may be in store for a string of warm, if not hot, sunny days for the rest of this week. I sure hope so. Because I love that combination of bright sunlight, warm breezes and Percy Faith's "Theme From a Summer Place" as I coast down the hill on my bike toward the lake. Will in Seattle

Nice post, Will.
For those of you who are not familiar with Percy Faith's classic and legendary hit song, Theme From A Summer
Place, it was first released as a 45-rpm single in 1960. It became the
top-selling single for all of 1960 and stayed at #1 on the Billboard
charts for an incredible 9 weeks -- the
longest all-time run of any instrumental song in the history
of the Billboard charts -- a record, by the way, that still stands to this very day.
The song also won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for 1960. It is yet another
lasting legacy of the greatness of this very talented man... the great maestro, Percy Faith.

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:08/25/2011 05:43:07Copy HTML Hi Chip!
I remember that summer. I was sixteen, almost seventeen, and I was a pop music nerd. Just loved to listen to the Top 40 radio stations and watch American Bandstand (and "Seattle Bandstand" too) on TV. I didn't have much spending money, (singles cost nearly a dollar and I was only making 35 cents an hour babysitting the neighbor kids) so I persuaded my uncle to loan me his tape recorder and I recorded songs (and TV show themes) off the TV by putting the microphone on the floor in front of the TV speaker (high tech I was not). That summer Dick Clark put on a cheesy (did he ever do any other kind?) TV special on ABC with guest stars Edd 'Kookie' Byrnes' and John "Maynard G. Krebs" Denver. I recorded the program but alas I no longer have a tape recorder to play the tape on. One of the segments that has stuck in my mind was a weirdly costumed dance number to the music of Percy Faith's single recording of "Theme From a Summer Place." Some time later the neighbor lady from across the street, who was like my second mom, loaned me an LP that had Summer Place on it. I can still remember the jacket. It was white with some green blades of grass or leaves. She got her LPs from her husband who was a narcotics cop and brought home stuff seized from the hapless targets of drug busts. I borrowed a lot of neat stuff from them back in those days. Will in Seattle

By the way, probably because you are so musically inclined, you inadvertently said John "Maynard G. Krebs" Denver in your post, when you actually meant to say Bob "Maynard G. Krebs" Denver. No worries buddy, it happens to the best of us! As for that Theme From A Summer Place album jacket that you were trying to recall, that was the Dot Records LP release of Billy Vaughn's rendition of the song. While good, Mr. Vaughn's version did not come close to Percy Faith's original version. Besides all the remarkable statistics that I gave in my prior post about Mr. Faith's original version, another one is that Percy's rendition of the song is ranked at #18 on Billboard's Top 100 songs during the first 50 years of the Hot 100 chart. I posted below the picture sleeve artwork for Percy Faith's original Columbia Records 45-rpm single release of the song, as well as the later Billy Vaughn Dot Records LP release you referred to. Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:08/25/2011 09:50:36Copy HTML You really are amazing, Chip!
That's the album jacket alright! I'll be the first to confess that my memory is going fast these days, and that 50 years ago the names Billy Vaughn and Percy Faith probably sounded an awful lot alike to me, since I didn't know one from the other in those days. I am disappointed to learn that that jacket isn't from a Percy Faith LP though, because to this day when I hear Percy Faith's "Theme From a Summer Place" I always see that Billy Vaughn album cover in my mind's eye, and probably always will. Oh well, I guess there's no reason that in my personal imaginary album collection, in my rapidly fading memory, I can't have my own imaginary album of a Percy Faith LP that has that Billy Vaughn artwork on the jacket. In fact, I think I'll listen to that album right now. It's perfect weather for a ride to the lake. Will in Seattle

Just for the record I thought I would post the original album cover artwork for the LP that Mr. Faith's 1960 smash hit single, Theme From A Summer Place, was later released on. The LP was entitled Tara's Theme From Gone With The Wind and it was released in 1961.

Re: The album cover above... I think it's interesting to note how the title was Tara's Theme From Gone With The Wind. Back in the '60s it was rather common to see albums named after a hit single (and sometimes two). Of course, when an album is released first, it's hard to say how any singles released from it will fare. But here's a case where the hit Theme From A Summer Place had long been established, yet they chose another name for the album. (Just a little trivial tidbit I noticed -- very trivial, I know).

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:08/26/2011 04:10:57Copy HTML
The Columbia Records Art Department eliminated the "Theme From" designation on the front cover of this LP for the song Theme From A Summer Place and two other songs because of space considerations. The other two songs they also did this for was Theme From The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs and Theme From The Apartment. The art department later did the same thing on the front cover of the subsequent reissue LP as well (which is posted below). However, on the back cover of both the original LP and the reissue, the songs were properly listed with their "Theme From" designations in front of the main song title.

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:08/27/2011 02:20:48Copy HTML That's correct, Jim. In fact, Sons And Lovers bubbled under the Hot 100 for 1 week in August 1960 (peaking at #111), and Theme From The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs bubbled under the Hot 100 for a total of 5 weeks in October 1960 (peaking at #101).

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:11/06/2012 05:00:03Copy HTML I belong to the Los Angeles Jazz Institute and every year they create a special CD for their members. Their most recent one is of early Chet Baker and features a track from a CBS radio program from 1955 of Chet Baker playing, with the Percy Faith orchestra, Shorty Roger's "Trickleydidlier" (originally on the Columbia album "Chet Baker with Strings"). It's interesting to hear Percy Faith's orchestra in this setting as I'm not aware of any recordings where he backs up a solo instrument, much less a jazz soloist-unlike Jackie Gleason or Paul Weston.

Re:Non-Christmas Percy Faith Date Posted:12/30/2014 01:12:23Copy HTML Hello friends I’m Giampiero from Rome (Italy) Exuse me for my bad and incorrect English but I hope
that you will understand me. The Maestro had also a great intuition to discover new
and beautiful songs. In 1953 he released album “Plays Continental” with three italian songs “Vola Colomba” and “Sympatico” (both lovely) but the third song was “Non Dimenticar” a wonderful tune, And so thanks to the Maestro in
1958 (with a superb arrangement of Nelson Riddle) Nat King Cole will make a historic
top hit in all the world. The song was from “Anna” a 1951 movie by Alberto
Lattuada (one of the most important italian directors) with a magnificent
Silvana Mangano and two very young Sophia Loren and Vittorio Gassman (score: Nino
Rota). Voice of Mangano was dubbed by Flo Sandon’s wife of Natalino Otto great
italian jazz singer of the ’40. Here’s the original song as well as the Maestro
listened for the first time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WamWU7RKoGM |
