Wow!  A 5-hour Yule Log, perhaps, next Christmas!  Hard to believe Christmas 2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of The Yule Log on WPIX.

If WPIX agrees to it, that'll mean they'd have to start at 8 AM, pre-empting an hour of PIX 11 Morning News or if they allow 9 AM - 2 PM, the timeless Laurel and Hardy classic March of the Wooden Soldiers would start at 2 PM.  Christmas 2016 falls on a Sunday.  Not sure if PIX 11 runs the Morning News on Sunday.

Modell's Sporting Goods paid for the time this year.  If Modell's is willing to pay for the fifth hour, would that be OK with WPIX?

Very exciting news, Chip!  Good luck with it!

Frank,

The compensation that WPIX receives from sponsors of the Yule Log broadcast does not completely make up for the commercial revenue that is lost to the station when airing the program; what it does do is just help offset it a little. So finding a sponsor for the new fifth hour won't be a problem. The problem is that it will be a fifth hour of severely reduced revenue for the station to absorb. But hopefully, they will bite the bullet and air the new 5th hour that I've produced -- even if it's only a one-time airing for the 50th anniversary. As for the time the 5-hour program would air, it could go either way by starting the program an hour earlier than normal or ending it an hour later. That would be determined at a later date.

Chip,
Happy New Year by the way....I know a lot of us here are probably already aware of the 50th anniversary of the YL this coming Xmas. I know the subject was already addressed previously here and the reason was clearly explained why it can't be done, but is there any possibility that in dedication to the 50th perhaps WPIX MIGHT show if not the entire length maybe a few hours (Like originally shown in 2001 as a 2hour showing) on Christmas Eve night since that was the way it was originally meant to be seen? Or is that still a little too far-fetched to ask WPIX to do? I am already aware of the proposed 5th hour.

Rich,

The thing that has prevented WPIX from broadcasting the Yule Log on Christmas Eve since its return to the air in 2001 is their commitment to network programming  (first as part of the WB Network from 2001-2005; and now as part of the CW Network from 2006 to the present). This, of course, was not a problem during the program's initial run on TV from 1966-1989 because during that time WPIX was an independent station. However, as a stroke of unbelievable timing, this year the station might break away from the CW Network and once again become an independent station. If that does indeed happen, they then will be free to air the program on Christmas Eve where it rightfully belongs. Now whether they will do that or not is another story, but I will be lobbying them hard to do so -- at least for the 50th anniversary.
