Date Posted:07/17/2011 02:50:16Copy HTML ***THIS IS A YULE LOG.COM EXCLUSIVE*** I got word today from my friend Alan Bunting in the U.K. that he has just completed remastering work on a brand new Christmas compilation CD that will be released in Europe by Guild Music in the next couple of weeks, and then here in the United States in the next couple of months. The CD will be called Christmas Celebration, and the big news about this CD is that it will contain seven of the fourteen songs from Percy Faith's long out-of-print LP, Hallelujah (aka Music Of Christmas, Volume 2). It will also contain songs from three other long out-of-print LPs: Billy Vaughn's Christmas Carols LP from 1958 (eight songs), George Melachrino's Christmas Joy LP from 1959 (five songs), and Wally Stott's Happy Holiday LP from 1959 (two songs). The other songs on the CD are from albums that are currently in print: Percy Faith's Music Of Christmas LP from 1959 (two songs), Mantovani's Christmas Carols LP from 1958 (one song), Mantovani's Christmas Greetings LP from 1963 (one song) and Arthur Fiedler's Pops Christmas Party LP from 1959 (four songs). Alan has personally done all the transfers, audio restoration and remastering for the music on this CD. The Guild Music catalog number will be #GLCD-5185, and it will available for purchase beginning on or around August 1st directly from Guild Music (Click here), or by early fall from other various online retailers. Alan sent me the artwork that will be used for the new CD, but asked me not to post it until it has been published on the Guild Music website. Therefore, I will file an update message later this month posting the CD cover artwork. Christmas Celebration

Now it Alan could get alhold of the orignal 1959 Masters of "Music of Chirstmas" by Percy Faith from Columbia/Sony, and put that out on a superb remastered disc, I'd run out of gifts to ask for anymore! Christmas does come in July. |

About 25 years ago (wow - can it be?) I would start listening to our beautiful music station right after Thanksgiving because of all the instrumental Christmas music you wouldn't hear anywhere else. This track listing looks like it will bring back memories of listening to that station.

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:07/18/2011 05:00:52Copy HTML Nestor: The new CD will be available for purchase online directly from Guild Music in about two weeks. Joliom: Nice to hear from you. Will: Glad to hear the news made your day. Johnny: Yes, the new CD will be available from U.S. retailers in about two months. As for releasing the entire Music Of Christmas LP by Percy Faith, unfortunately that won't happen as Guild Music's forte is multi-artist CD compilations. Jim: I'm assuming that you're referring to our former great Tri-State area radio station Easy 93, WPAT. If you are, then yes, this new CD is a page right out of their playbook. I really miss that station! Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:07/18/2011 04:56:00Copy HTML You mentioned the tracks were from Hallelujah aka Music of Christmas Vol 2. But as I recall, those two albums are not exactly the same. Specifically, Hallelujah is in mono, and MOC2 was a separate re-recording of the same songs done several years later in stereo. They're close, but definitely not the same. So we do we know which source tracks are being used in this new compilation? (For the record, the same story applies to 'Music of Christmas' - separate recordings in mono & stereo, made years apart.)

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:07/18/2011 08:10:35Copy HTML That is not correct at all, Jay. The albums Hallelujah and Music Of Christmas, Volume 2 are the exact same albums. Music Of Christmas, Volume 2 was just a reissue of Hallelujah. And no, Mr. Faith did not re-record Hallelujah; it was recorded in true Stereo here in New York in 1958. The only one of his Christmas albums that he ever re-recorded was 1954's Music Of Christmas; it was re-recorded in Stereo here in New York in 1959. Posted below are the exact details of the LP recording sessions and the Columbia Records catalog numbers. PERCY FAITH Music Of Christmas Recorded on May 24th, 25th and 26th 1954 in New York City (Columbia catalog #CL-588) Re-Recorded in Stereo on June 16th and 19th 1959 in New York City (Columbia catalog #CL-1381/CS-8176) Hallelujah Recorded on May 20th, 21st and 29th 1958 in New York City (Columbia catalog #CL-1187/CS-8033) **Reissued as Music Of Christmas, Volume 2 in 1965 (Columbia catalog #CL-2405/CS-9205) Lawrence F. Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:09/14/2011 04:55:24Copy HTML I received my copy of this CD in the mail yesterday. I'm not a huge fan of compilations, but this is a very good one. I'd never heard Melachrino's "Good King Wenceslas" before - wow, what an arrangement. I'll be playing this one a good deal during the season. |

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:09/14/2011 08:27:25Copy HTML Hi Tom!
It pleases me to learn that you appreciate that Melachrino arrangement of Good King Wenceslas. I'll never forget the first time I heard it. I was a teenager back in the 60s, and even though I was no longer a child, I still went downtown every year at Christmas time to visit the department stores, which in those days still had large decorating departments that tried to outdo each other in their displays. I was in one of the lower-end department stores, watching the kids talk to Santa, and over the PA came that haunting rendition of King Wenceslas. I button holed a clerk and asked him to find out who the orchestra was and he disappeared into a doorway behind Santa's chair and reappeared with the LP jacket of Melachrino's "Christmas Joy." I bought that album that year, and have been playing it ever since. It's probably my favorite Christmas LP, and I've been trying, without success, to find it on CD. So I'm excited that some of the tracks from it are finally being released on CD. Will in Seattle

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:09/15/2011 02:44:40Copy HTML Hi Tom! Thanks for letting us all know that "Christmas Joy" is available in MP3 format. As you can imagine, I already have MP3s of the whole album, but I hope that sometime before I croak I'll be able to hold in my hands a CD of it as well. Chip: I'm really heartened to learn that you're agitating to get "Christmas Joy" released on CD. If anyone can do it, you're the man! And, yeah, I figured it had never been released on CD as in all my years of searching I'd never been able to find any mention of it. All I've been able to find are those unaffordable transfers from LP that you find from time to time on the web. All: I checked Amazon.com for "The Golden Age of Light Music: Christmas Celebration" and they still don't have it. I'd prefer not to have to go through the hassle of registering at the guildmusic.com. Does anyone know of an online retailer who sells it with fewer hoops to jump through? Does guildmusic.com take PayPal? P.S. Our five-day-summer out here in Seattle came to an abrupt end a couple of days ago and now it sure feels like Autumn. So today I'm going to dig out my Halloween decorations. And you know what that means: Can Christmas be far behind? Yippee! Will in Seattle

I placed my order on 10/07/2011 just before midnight and the CD shipped on 10/11/2011 so it took just under four (4) days to process the order and ship the CD. I have not received it yet, so I don't know how long it will take to get here. I'll let you know as soon as I get it though. Like you, I was holding out for Amazon.com and free shipping. -=Perry |

Will, Amazon carries the entire line of Guild CDs, which now totals 86 in all. This includes Christmas Celebration; however, it is currently available on Amazon only as an MP3 download (Click here). The CD itself will definitely be available for order soon, but unfortunately, I just can't tell you exactly when.

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/19/2011 04:51:38Copy HTML Welcome aboard, Alan!
Scotland? Wow. I sure didn't expect to see the guy responsible for the re-mastering here on The Yule Log. Just wonderful work that you have done making these songs available to us. Excellent choice in the song selections as well. Makes me wish that all of these albums were available for purchase. I haven't had a chance to go through the entire CD yet, but I like what I've heard so far. Thank you so much for your part in helping to make this quality music available to us. As to why I just didn't order it from Guild in the first place . . . I didn't think that Amazon was going to sell it for $17 or $18 (first and foremost.) Second, since I get free second day air shipping (Amazon Prime member) I have become accustomed to not paying shipping charges and getting my music quickly. Silly point when you consider that I waited weeks without ordering it in hopes of getting free and fast shipping. The last time that I ordered something from your side of the pond, I had my credit card number stolen, so I was a bit hesitant to pull that trigger again. The Paypal offer eased that fear somewhat. Yes, I am fully aware that I could have just as easily gotten the number stolen from ordering from this side of the pond, but hey . . . we are not always logical creatures. I have never had an issue with Amazon though, so I trust them. I trust Paypal as well, so you can pass on to whoever that having that payment option available is what allowed me to feel good about pulling the trigger on the purchase from Guild. (No offense intended for your regular payment method.) Will I received my CD yesterday, so it took about 10 days total from the time I placed the order (on a weekend) until the CD arrived here. Not bad at all. To Everyone Else, $12.41 is what this CD cost me with shipping. 30 songs total and most of them not available anywhere else right now and not a stinker in the bunch. You just cannot beat this deal with a stick. That is a little over 41 cents per song for quality instrumentals, many of which are either out of print or never released on CD. This is a very affordable CD. I would have paid full price for Christmas Sleigh Bells all by itself. Add in the George Melachrino tunes and I was certainly sold. Billy Vaughn too? (I already had all the rest.) Happy Camper! -=Perry |

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/20/2011 11:52:26Copy HTML Hi Alan!
What a wonderful surprise to see you posting here! After all, you are one of our heroes you know. In this era of declining CD sales, I'm impressed by your dedication to bringing out high quality CDs of this ageless music. I want you to know how grateful I am to you for saving from obscurity some of my most beloved recordings. As you may have noted while reading this thread, I finally gave in and ordered Christmas Celebration directly from guildmusic.com and now can't wait to receive it. To answer your question about why some of us hesitated to order from overseas and were waiting for the CD to be offered by amazon.com; in my case it was just a matter of convenience. It's just that I already have an amazon.com account and have been pleased by their service, so I just wanted to avoid having to go to the trouble of jumping through the hoops to open yet another online account. But, now that I've done it, I'm glad I did it. I hope you'll check back here from time to time to get our feedback and look over our wish lists. For me the one track I wish you'd included in your Christmas Celebration compilation is Percy Faith's arrangement of "Gesu Bambino." That track has special meaning for me because of where I was was and whom I was with the first time I heard it. But aside from the personal associations it has for me, I believe it stands on its own as one of Percy Faith's most lovely Christmas arrangements. Another track that I wish had been included is George Melachino's "The First Noel" from the "Christmas Joy" LP. I'm a big fan of Hill Bowen's arrangements, and rate "The First Noel" as one of his most spectacular arrangement in what I've dubbed his "cinematic soundscape" style. By any chance are you contemplating a Christmas Celebration II CD? If so, those are the two tracks at the top of my wish list. So, I'm sure I speak for all of us here at the Yule Log when I say thanks a million for making available to us this high quality CD of these Christmas music recordings that are so precious to us and which many of us have spent years searching for in vain. Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/21/2011 01:31:29Copy HTML I can't say with 100% accuracy being my memory isn't quite what is used to be right now lol, but sometime back in the early 1980's before personal computers were "affordable" to anyone, I think it was a PBS Special on Christmas Eve, and I want to say that Leontyne Price was performing at The New York Metropolitan Opera. She did a beautiful rendition of "Gesu Bambino"
I have it on a video tape that I'm hoping wasn't in the batch of tapes that got ruined from a pipe leaking in my basement at my old apartment. I just moved a week ago into a new apartment and haven't gotten everything unpacked yet. But before I moved, some of the tapes that were in the basement, I did go through them before I moved and try to see if they would play and the ones that didn't got tossed in the trash, but I am fairly certain that this particular tape is in one of those 2-drawer VCR tape cabinets that you can stack on top of each other. Being I was much younger then, even though I had several record albums; I didn't know a lot about them so I really didn't know the title to the song. I only remember that any time I hear this beautiful song, be it Instrumental or Vocal, In English or another language, it always brings tears to my eyes and shivers through my body. I am very passionate about music, especially Christmas music and more importantly, songs about the Birth of our Lord and Savior "Jesus Christ". Whom, without, we wouldn't have "Christmas" Though I do like all the Christmas songs that I grew up listening to, it's the ones such as "Gesu Bambino" If you listen to the words with your heart, you really get the "True Meaning of Christmas". Other songs such as "O Holy Night" "It Came Upon the Midinight Clear" "Silent Night", the words say it all. I hope I can find the tape once I am settled because a lot of tapes, I didn't label so I have no idea as to what is on them. I do know that I have "The WPIX Yule Log" on a couple different tapes, but it is only the 2-hour version. I was very fortunate to have videotaped it because no one knew that in 1989 that WPIX was going to start showing other programming the following Christmas. So at least, I would still be able to view The Yule Log any time I wanted to. I do thank "Joe" and "Chip" for this message board and more importantly want to thank Chip for all his help, not just to me, but to everyone out there who collect records and/or CD's and loves "The WPIX Yule Log". Chip has been very informative and pointed me in the right direction for finding most of my more recent record albums. I have been a collector since my childhood and still have every single record from about the age of 3 or 4, that didn't get broken. When I started to take better care of my records, I didn't know about re-issues and Chip helped me figure out how to tell if they were an original release or a reissue being several record companies changed their labels over the years, but often kept the same album number. I have replaced several hundred albums already that were re-issues. I myself had every album that the music from The Yule Log was taken from, even most of the ones that Chip added to the 4th. hour . But again, some were re-issues or were on CD. But getting back to "Gesu Bambino", if anyone remembers this particular performance from the 1980's could they help me confirm that it was indeed Leontyne Price and that it was on Christmas Eve at The New York Metropolitan Opera? I've tried to find any reference to this on the Internet, but have been unsucessful. I can cleary hear the song in my head and can almost picture the evening gown she was wearing, but again, this was probably 30 years ago and I was only in my 20's. (I'm not afraid to let people know how old I am lol) Once I get settled and if I find the tape, I will copy it to my computer and burn it to a DVD and will try to upload parts of it on YouTube and post the clips here. I've been typing this post for almost an hour between eating breakfast and unpacking and I can't get this beautiful song out of my head. This is how passionate I am about music, especially Christmas music. The song will be in my head all day now. If there are any inaccuracies or typo's in this post, I apologize. Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/21/2011 11:31:02Copy HTML Chip - Glad to hear you appreciate "Hallelujah Chorus" being included. By coincidence I was visited today by a friend who happens to be an organist who has taken part in many performances of The Messiah. He's also bought numeorus Guild CDs but told me he wasn't go to purchase this one because he didn't think he would play it very often.
I couldn't resist playing him "Hallelujah Chorus" at quite high level over my KEF 105 Loudspeakers and when it was over he said "Amazing - you don't even notice there isn't a chorus!". He then listened to the incredible Melachrino arrangement of "Good King Wenceslas" and has now decided that he will buy a copy after all. As you explained, there's no chance of the complete album appearing on one CD because Guild's format is exclusively compilations but I can assure you that if sales are satisfactory, and if Guild want a Volume 2 for next Christmas (two BIG ifs!), the remaining Hallelujah tracks will be my first choices for inclusion. Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/21/2011 11:39:05Copy HTML Thanks again Chip,
I was trying to do the same thing with my blog with being able to introduce the younger children to this great music, as long as it wasn't released on CD and prior to February 1972 where the RIAA ruled that Copyright enforcent would be up to the individual States to enforce. But anything after that fell under the RIAA rules. I had a lot of grateful people all over the world thanking me for helping them to relive part of their past and be able to share this wonderful music with thier own children. But then other people had to ruin it by taking my hard work and posting it on their own blog's and other sites and claiming that it was from their own personal record collection. So I am no longer putting an links for them to download and it is just for informational purposes. Even though everything I posted wasn't released on CD, unless it was under a different title and song order, then I would delete it. But I was the one who got the DMCA complaints. It's such a shame because people are begging me to put the links back, but I didn't create my blog just so people could get "free music" I wanted to help keep the memory of these great artist's alive so that our children would also be able to know this music was once played all the time on the radio stations at Christmas. Most of today's children don't even know who Percy Faith or Henry Mancini are. But alas, as with most Christmas music blogs, they have been taken down by Google. But being mine has no links, I guess they are leaving it alone. There is alot of informaiton there so if a person wants to try and find the vinyl, they have the information they need to look for. As you know, I prefer Vinyl over CD's because Analog is much better than Digital when it comes to music because of the frequency response that Vinyl is capable of reproducing and CD's can't. I know you have pretty much had your albums transferred to CD's in order to preserve the vinyl from getting scratched. But there is just something special about the little crackle that Vinyl has. It takes me back to much better times. I am sure that you will succeed in getting Percy Faith's "Halleluhah (aka Music Of Christmas, Volume 2) released on CD. And yes, to quote you, if you don't mind, "One of the many things that made Percy Faith the greatest Christmas artist of them all, bar none, is that his Christmas music had an ethereal, celestial and angelic quality to it. In fact, so much so, that it sounds like it was literally piped down from heaven." Whenever I hear his Christmas music, it always brings tears of joy to my eyes and shivers through my whole body. It's the same with Classical and Opera listening to a beautiful Aria and when the music is soft and then builds up to a Crescendo it does the same thing. Though this example isn't Christmas related, when I listen to Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" after the lengthy theme from "The Exorcist" and then the music glides into another tune and it Crescendo's and he starts playing one instrument and then adds another while still playing the same tune and the first instrument fades out and then he adds another instrument and so on and when he says "Tubular Bells" I can't stop the tears and the shivers. I can't really explain it, but it is so moving. Just while I am typing the example, I am feeling the same emotions and I'm not even listening to the album. Music can be so powerful, but not the music that is being played today. Most of the time you can't even understand what they are singing because they are screaming or it's very breathy and it just doesn't compare to the older style of music. I'm pretty sure you share the same passion for music as I do and I would venture to guess there are other members here who feel the same. It's people like us who are keeping this music alive and especially your efforts to get these Great Masters of Christmas Music released on CD to forever preserve them. Christmas Isn't Just A Day In December, It's A Way Of Life.

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/22/2011 12:21:42Copy HTML Will,
I will send you a private message via the Mail Icon at the top of the page of the message board and you should see it flashing when you have mail. I sometimes don't notice it for a few days because I really don't get messages via the Amoo message system. It's not that I don't want anyone to know about it, but posting a link here would take away from what the purpose of this message board is all about. I haven't done anything with it in awhile, but there is still a lot of information there. * Edited to clarify a little better about the Mail Icon Christmas Isn't Just A Day In December, It's A Way Of Life.

Re:New Compilation CD with Percy Faith tracks to be released! Date Posted:10/22/2011 11:30:22Copy HTML Thanks Chip,
I appreciate it, though it's basically dead, there is still a lot of information there. I don't know why the search function isn't working though because I don't have it disabled, but it tells me I do. So if anyone goes to see what I have posted, just scroll down along the right hand column to the Archive section and you can click on the year, then month and date and it will take you to the posts I have done. I just wish I could feel safe to contribute some more wonderful Christmas music from a bygone era so that today's children can learn about the music we grew up with and hear them, most likely for the first time in their lives. Please click here for my blog. I really haven't done anything with it since March. But I may just scan album art from other albums I haven't gotten to post yet and list all the available information I have about them. I haven't even checked the earliest posts to see if the artwork is still there or not, but when I have time I will go through each post and if something is missing, I will put it back up. But right now, I am still unpacking from my move and have alot of stuff to go through. Christmas Isn't Just A Day In December, It's A Way Of Life.
