The inimitable Mahalia Jackson, the Queen of Gospel Music, sang with such passion, feeling and inspiration that is was positively spellbinding. There was an ethereal beauty in her singing that was uniquely her own. She was one of America’s great musical treasures and was truly, in every sense of the word, a one-of-a-kind.


During her long and illustrious career with Columbia Records she recorded three great Christmas albums: Sweet Little Jesus Boy (1955), Silent Night (1962), and Christmas With Mahalia (1969).

 

The following song, "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," is the title song from her first Christmas album in 1955; however, the version posted here is the re-recorded stereo version which was released in 1962 on her second Christmas album, Silent Night. This later version is not only superior technologically, but more importantly, artistically as well. Mahalia only got better as time went on, and after listening to this song, I’m sure you’ll agree:
