Thanks, Chip.
You know what stinks about this for me this year? I got rid of cable and have been OTA since -- but Antenna TV isn't HD. If I can get a new job that pays more, I plan to go back to cable (originally planned to be ready for hockey season). But right now? It looks grim...

Ben,

For you in Chicago, there's also local affiliate WGN-9. They will be airing the program 2am-6am (CST).

In addition, the flagship broadcast on WPIX-TV here in New York will be streamed on their website 9am-1pm (EST).

So hopefully between these two other options you can still pick it up.

Chip,

I called our local affiliate at WGRZ TV and we get Antenna TV over the air only on Digital Channel 2-3.  Last Christmas, they had some local commercials and I had to leave a voicemail for the woman who handles the Antenna TV programming.  Her name is Colleen, and I explained that it is supposed to be broadcast for 4 hours without any commercials or station breaks.  I also mentioned to her that last year they did interrupt it with a few commercials and station breaks.

I don't know if it would help if you were to contact her or not, but if you need to, I could privately message you with her contact information.

{EDITED} 10/10/14 by Christmas Always
I wanted to mention this the other day, more as an FYI, but it is sort-of "Off-Topic"

I know that the TV providers, i.e. Cable, Satellite and FIOS, don't have to carry the secondary channels and I am able to pick up Antenna TV only over the air being it isn't the primary channel, but the signal isn't as strong as it would be if it was being retransmitted by the TV providers.

Also, what I am posting below is more of an FYI being some TV stations do carry more than one channel on their Digital Frequency.  Our channel that carries Antenna TV has 3 channels in all.

Some other "Low Power" channels carry 5 or 6 channels, but it is impossible to pick them up being their transmitters are over 30 miles away, and I'm
sure that in other areas, they may have the same problem.  Just because the TV Station may be in their city, doesn't mean their transmitter is anywhere close to the station.

I know our MeTV affiliate is only available via Cable/Satellite or FIOS being their transmitter is 30 miles away from us and their transmitter strength is under 30 KW.

I realize that MeTV has nothing to do with Antenna TV, but just wanted to mention that they do have 4 Channels: 67-1 is MeTV (16:9 720i), but they don't broadcast the entire network programming and insert some local "Sports Talk" programs and a few other locally produced programs, but on 67-2 they broadcast THIS TV Network, and on 67-3 MeTV (4:3 480i) and they broadcast the full Network programming and lastly, on 67-4 they broadcast the DayStar Network.

Susan,

Unfortunately, we have no control over what the local Antenna TV affiliates do with regard to commercial interruptions. Not only can they insert commercials into the broadcast, but they can also preempt the program entirely and air something else if they so choose. Thankfully, I have not heard of a case where that has happened, at least not yet.

Thankfully, most of the affiliates respect the integrity of the program by showing it in its entirety, uncut and commercial-free.

Chip, You may have addressed this is the past (if so I apologize) but is there a reason why WPIX switched the Yule Log broadcast to Antenna TV instead of keeping it on Ch. 11? Not being critical of the decision, just curious? Thanks, by the way, for posting the 2014 schedule.

Anthony,

What I posted so far here on this thread is only the national coast-to-coast television coverage, which has been broadcast on Antenna TV since 2011. (Prior to 2011 it was broadcast on WGN America.)

The local Tribune affiliate broadcast schedule, which includes the flagship broadcast on the flagship station, WPIX-TV, will be posted by me in the coming weeks.

No problem, Anthony. You probably got confused because in the past I posted the entire Yule Log broadcast schedule on one thread (national and local). This is the first year that I am posting the schedules on separate threads. To avoid any further confusion, I added a disclaimer at the bottom of my announcement post that the local schedule will be posted on a separate thread in the coming weeks.

Hi Chip,
Thanks for the info but Channel 17 (WPHL) shows the 3 hour version and Antenna TV did not show it at all last year unless I missed something. Hopefully, I can DVR both and catch the 4 hour version.

Lisa,

Last year WPHL in Philadelphia aired the Yule Log for 4 hours from 8am-12pm. If you're saying that they aired the 3-hour version and then repeated an hour's worth of music for the fourth broadcasted hour from 11am-12pm, then I need to know about it so I can have engineering here in New York send WPHL the additional reel with my new 4th hour. As far as Antenna TV is concerned, the local affiliates can elect to air the program in an abridged form, or even not to air it at all. However, I was under the impression that WPHL did indeed air the program on their local Philly Antenna TV affiliate. If they didn't, this will be the first time I've heard of where an affiliate preempted the program entirely. I'd hate to think that is the case.

I really wish that everyone across the country could get the New York City WPIX flagship broadcast of the Yule Log, as
well as WPIX's Antenna TV affiliate broadcast of the program, where both presentations are the complete 4-hour version and are shown without any commercial interruptions whatsoever. In addition, WPIX streams the entire program on their website as well.

Re:2014 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule (National Coverage)

Date Posted:10/15/2014 03:05:47Copy HTML

Chip,
I can't remember if I mentioned this after the Christmas 2013 broadcast, I would have to go back through several threads to find out for sure, when I was DVR'ing The Yule Log on our Antenna TV affiliate.  They had it in the program guide as 1 hour, and then 3 hours, so I manually had to set my timer to record that channel in order to get 4 hours in one recording.

Being they had interrupted it with local station breaks and other commercials, I really didn't pay too much attention to what songs were playing and basically would play a little, until I saw a station break and commercial, then I sped through them and then would stop and listen a little to the music and speed up again and stop to hear the music for a few seconds and repeated this until I came to the 4th. station break and commercials, I stopped and deleted it.

I was so disappointed, but as you know I receive WPIX as a Superstation on Dish Network, though it is only in SD, so I do have the full 4-hour versions for 2010, 2012 and 2013.  I didn't keep 2011 because, if I remember correctly there was a glitch and WPIX played the wrong reel or something.

As for me, I remember it too, but I can't say which hour they made the mistake on, but as I have mentioned before, after watching The WPIX Yule Log since 1966 until 1989 and then 2001 - 2013, the music is so burned into my memory, that if I hear Percy Faith's "Joy To The World" on the radio, I immediately expect to hear Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians "A Musical Christmas Card"

Susan,

That glitch in 2011 was caused by a problem with the server, not the reels. All the reels did indeed air and in their correct order.

I wish everyone across the country could get WPIX as an elected station with their cable/satellite package. Then everyone could enjoy the program as we enjoy it here in New York -- and as it was meant to be seen: complete, uncut and without interruptions.

Chip,
Thank you for the clarification.  I think there was one occasion where another, Antenna TV station played the wrong reel.  I don't remember what year though.  If I am mistaken, I apologize.

I too wish everyone across the USA could get WPIX and in HD, but according to DirecTV and Verizon FIOS, they "don't want to waste bandwidth"  They also tell you something about if you have a local CW affiliate, then you can't get get a distant broadcast network.  But that is wrong because a lot of Cable TV providers give us WGN-America.

Not only that, I know with Time-Warner Cable, DirecTV and Dish Network, that they give you your local channels on or close to their actual channel number, but then they also give them to you in the 5000's 6000's and 9000's.  But they don't consider that ""Wasting Bandwidth"

Then they also give us both SD and HD of our local TV stations as well as other Networks and they are using 2 channels each.

Time Warner Cable told me that they can't get WPIX in my area because there aren't enough people interested in it to warrant the cost they would have to negotiate with WPIX for re-transmitting their channel to us.  And if they did carry WPIX, they would have to raise their prices in order to offset their cost.  WPIX is in their "Request a Network" section.

Hi Susan,

This is very interesting.  I wonder if this is the reason why I am seeing the black bars on the side of my Yule Log broadcast.  I watch the WPIX version via DirecTV HD on all 1080p HD equipment.  For some reason every year I get those black bars on the side of my broadcast and it's very frustrating.  If what you said is correct then DirecTV is only transmitting the SD version.  That's the only thing that makes sense.  How can they do that if I am paying a premium for DirecTV service?!

Is anyone else experiencing this same problem??

If you are in the NYC area and get DirecTV as one of your local channels, I believe you should be able to get it in HD. To my knowledge, I believe it was originally filmed in 16:9 ratio but cropped to fit the standard TV's before HD was available, so even though WPIX is in HD, they are broadcasting and SD 4:3 ratio, so I'm guessing it is just a better quality or stretched to fit the screen for HD 16:9 ratio.  Chip would most likely know more about this.

I live in Western NY State, an as I mentioned DirecTV refused to give us WPIX, but with Dish Network, we get in only in SD, but  on the remote, there is a button to press to switch the image to 16:9 ratio to fill the screen.  But it is still really only SD quality.  I have 2 TV's and the first one is connected to my receiver via the HDMI port, so that automatically will show HD programs in the 16:9 ratin and if it is an SD broadcast there are the black bars on the sides, but by pressing the button, the first setting is Grey Bar  (on both sides of the image) Normal (black bars on both sides of the image) then there is Stretch with fills the screen and finally Partial Zoom which cuts off some of the image on all four sides.

Then the second TV is connected via COAXIAL Cable, so any HD programs appear in Letterbox format with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, and the SD programs fill the screen.  Both TV's are HD.

We have a a local MeTV Network which I mentioned above.  They are actually broadcasting in HD, so when they show locally produced programs, there aren't any black bars on the screen, but when they show "Classic TV Programs" there are, and then in that area, sideways, is WBBZ TV.  But if I press the button on my remote, I can stretch it to fill the screen and get rid of that.  Unfortunately, they aren't a Tribune owned station so they wouldn't be broadcasting The WPIX Yule Log.

I hope this is helpful.

Re:2014 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule (National Coverage)

Lisa:

That's disappointing to learn that last year WPHL changed their schedule at the last minute and for 2013 only aired the program for 3 hours instead of the full 4 hours that they had committed to early on.

In 2011 and 2012 they were supposed to have aired the program for the full 4 hours as well -- and hopefully they did, as nothing has ever been brought to my attention to suggest the contrary. In fact, in 2011 I called engineering to make sure they had the additional reel with my new fourth hour. So at least in 2011, I'm confident that they did indeed air the complete 4-hour program. In 2009 and 2010, however, the program was scheduled from the beginning to air only 3 hours.

As for this year, unfortunately, WPHL only has it scheduled to air for  hours from 8am-10:30am. However, this could possibly change. No word yet on whether it will air on their Antenna TV affiliate.

Susan:

That's correct: the Yule Log was filmed in 16:9 aspect ratio, but cropped to 4:3.

Hi Chip...I think I posted something about this before in the past so please excuse me if it's been repeated. With respect to the posting of the national schedule for the YL....my mom lives in Arizona(for the winter months). Being in MST does that mean she would have to be awake sometime before 7AM in order to catch any part of the YL? Please forgive me if I'm getting confused but she always asks me about it and i want to be clear as to what happens...for this year at least!
Thanks in advance!

Well, when my siblings and I were all under 10 years old, way too many years ago, lol, we used to get up at 4:00 AM and be begging our mother to see what Santa had brought us.  Eventually it got later and later until we got up at 7:00 AM.  Then as we started going our separate ways, it was whenever we felt like getting up.

We didn't know at the time that our mother had been up all night wrapping the presents and putting them under the tree, and couldn't understand why she was so tired.  Where she had hid them was another mystery because our apartment was so small.

Looks like I'm not going to be able to enjoy the log properly this year, our antenna TV channel has completely messed up the aspect ratio display lately.  First it had some weird zoom/cropping thing going on, now it's displaying really narrow...not sure what the heck those people at antenna tv are up to, but they seem to know nothing about aspect ratios.

Alas there is no joy in Mudville.   Every year I review this list with hope and anticipation.
I live in the Rurals of Michigan.  We get all our TV stuff by Satellite  Directv.  Nope nobody there
has Antenna nor the Yule Log.   Local channels,  a few distant ones have it on their sub channels.  But getting them is
a stretch with the new digital stuff.    I enjoy every ones discussion but feel so left out.  Good news one of your
members so nicely sent me a copy of older broadcast versions that I can watch.  But still long for the real thing.  So all of you
out their complaining about commercials, breaks in coverage, shortened versions,  mixed up listings etc. Just remember us
unfortunate ones that cannot get it at all.

Steve,

Have you ever checked with Dish Network to see if you would be able to receive their SuperStation Package for $7.00 a month or $2.00 a month per channel?  WPIX, WWOR, WSBK, KWGN, KTLA.  I know that DirecTV doesn't want to "Waste Bandwidth" quoting a former DirecTV Technician who now works for Dish Network and though DirecTV will tell you that they can't give you Distant Broadcast Networks if you already receive that Network due to Local Market Area Rules, or something like that, but Dish Network does offer these 5 stations as a separate package though, sadly, only in SD for the time being.

I don't know if they would bundle Satellite Internet Service though to save you some money.

Chip,

I don't know what happened, but KWGN's broadcast only recorded 3 hours on my DVR, but it was listed in my program guide for 4 hours ant I always set it to record 2 minutes early and 2 minutes late, just in case the receiver time and network time are off a little, and when I set it for KWGN, it was for the full 4 hours.  I can't say that KWGN didn't broadcast the 4-hours or not, but my guide wasn't like last year, 1 hour and then 3 hours, it was schedule4 for 4 complete hours, not like last year, and there wasn't any scheduling conflicts for my timers.

Also, our Antenna TV affiliate did broadcast the Yule Log in 4:3 screen ratio, but I had to manually set the time and channel and I set it an hour early, so I didn't get the last hour.  So far, WPIX's broadcast appears to be fine,  I am transferring it to the computer now.

My cable company dropped WPIX for my area this past January and the Antenna TV affiliate for my area chose not to broadcast The Yule Log!  Thankfully WPIX did a live stream on their website, but I missed out on March of the Wooden Soldiers!

I want to check if anyone else has noticed these technical errors in the antenna TV airing of the yule log.

I made a DVR recording of the yule log last year, and the recording was plagued with multiple audio drop outs.  I wasn't sure if it was my DVR or the broadcast, but I haven't had this issue with other programs I DVR.  I figured, whatever the issue, I'll DVR it this year, and if I get drop outs again, with 2 full recordings I should be able to piece together a full version.

Well, this year, I've found the drop outs are still there, identically to the previous year's drop outs, which has me questioning if there's an issue with antenna tv's airing of the yule log.

To be specific, there are 2 dropouts in the first song, Joy To The World, to give specific examples.  The first is 28 seconds into the song, the 2nd is near the end at 1:43.

There are no video glitches that accompany these errors, just audio drop outs.

I only have the DVR captures to go by, with the hours that it airs in my time zone I wasn't able to watch it live, but with 2 recordings of it displaying identical issues it seems to me that's how it aired.

Jon,

Being my DVR had to be manually set, as I explained above, I missed the first hour of Antenna TV's broadcast, so I didn't bother to even listen to the last 3 hours, so I can't comment on how it came out.  But yes, last year there were audio dropouts and as also mentioned, black bars on all 4 sides of the picture, and zooming in didn't make any difference.

I don't know if any other members here who have Antenna TV noticed anything wrong or not, but hopefully all the Antenna TV affiliates ran the program without any glitches,

Susan

Susan
:

I checked with KWGN in Denver and they did indeed show the program for four hours. Not sure why your DVR didn't capture it.

Jonathan
:

The problem with the audio dropouts on the Antenna TV broadcast is system-wide. I'm currently working with engineering to resolve the problem for 2015.

Thanks Chip,

My guide did show that it was for 4 hours, and by just clicking on the program that is listed, it is supposed to record the entire program.  As I mentioned in a previous post, there were no conflicts in recordings, but for some reason, it only recorded 3 hours.

Oh well, I did get the WPIX broadcast for 4 hours, and that is what is most important.  I just hope anyone else didn't experience the same problem if they have Dish Network.

Hi Chip,
Happy New Year!
As always, a BIG THANK YOU for all you do for the fans of The Yule Log!
The Yule Log has been a gift of tradition through all of my years and I continue it with my wife and kids.
I have a couple of questions.
First, do you have the ratings for the 2014 broadcast yet?
Second is about this year's sponsors.
I had made note of the 2 or 3 sponsors which were announced at the start of the broadcast, but in the shuffle of holiday cleanup it was thrown away.  Who were the sponsors and how can I (we) contact them to thank them for their support of The Yule Log?
I want them to know how much it is appreciated.
Only 347 days to go!

Thanks again,
Kevin

Happy New Year to you too, Kevin!

The Yule Log came in 3rd in the Nielsen ratings here in New York this year. And the sponsors for this year's broadcast were Verizon FiOS, McDonald's and the Tri-state Honda dealers. The best way to contact the sponsors is through their websites.

Chip,

I just now got to view the DVD recording that my family on Long Island sent me of this year's WPIX broadcast of the Yule Log.

I was curious to know what you thought of the station's decision to air the Log this year with the "Merry Christmas PIX 11" message superimposed in the lower right corner. Although I realize that it is the station's choice to present the program in any way they choose, I still don't know how I feel about this.

I can't decide if this on-screen message takes away from the presentation of the Yule Log (since it loses the true fireplace feeling) or if it enhances it as "certifying" the program as a true WPIX showing.

This is a minor matter, for sure, but I'm still curious to hear your thoughts.

I did not approve, Billy. I thought it was just way too intrusive and spoiled the illusion that is the program's intent of having a fireplace in your living room.

I agree Chip,

I didn't mind the occasional WPIX Station Logo. but the "Merry Christmas PIX 11" Logo was a distraction.  I like seeing the coals fall on the right side of the screen during the loop and it was blocked out and didn't seem like a real fireplace.

Though I do have a few DVD's from previous years, it's just not the same as having one from each year and it would be even better if there wasn't any Logo at all, but I guess, by FCC Laws, they have to show some sort of station identification during their programming.

Hi Chip,
Antenna TV showed the whole 4 hours.  I dvr'd it, and then I had to upgrade my boxes, so I lost it.  I guess in 311 days, I will have another opportunity to dvr it again.  C'est la vie

Sorry to hear that, Lisa; but no worries as there are some small audio glitches that permeate the Antenna TV transmission of the broadcast that I'm currently working to resolve (see my above post from December 29, 2014). So hopefully next Christmas you'll get a better recording of the program.
