Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/14/2008 01:52:39Copy HTML I remember last Christmas that WPIX had run the Yule Log for 4 hours which was the restored 3 hour presentation plus (I believe) the second and third half-hours repeated. They had skipped over the first half-hour so that Percy Faith's "Joy To The World" didn't get played back to back after the restored 3 hour presentation had ended. I'm quite sure it was the second and third half-hours. I'll have to check my DVD-R copy from last year just to be sure. Anyway, I'm guessing that WPIX will do the same thing with its 4 hour block of Yule Log programming this Christmas.

My initial recommendation to WPIX for the added fourth hour was to repeat the entire second hour; however, in order to achieve the goal of ending the program with Percy Faith, cherry-picking songs 13-36 turned out to be the best way to go. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/21/2008 04:30:12Copy HTML Glad to have you with us, Ben! The best one to contact at WGN is Sean Compton. He is the Sr. VP of Programming/Entertainment at the station and the one producing the new WGN Yule Log program. Let him know how you feel. At this point, they are undecided as to whether they are going to use their own music with the new Yule Log video, or the original Yule Log soundtrack that we restored in 2006. Perhaps if enough folks contact them, we can at least salvage out of this deal the original Yule Log music. Here's Sean's email address: . Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/23/2008 07:32:18Copy HTML Hello Chip,
I just sent an email to Ms. King asking that she reconsider airing the WPIX Yule Log, maybe in addition to their original production. If they plan to air their production without commerical interruption, I doubt they will air both versions. I did ask that if they only air their version, that they consider using the WPIX Yule Log soundtrack with it. I conveyed to her that in my opinion, this would be the best way to go. I hope this is okay to ask, would anybody have a copy of the restored Yule Log that they can send to me? I had a copy of the restored version a couple of years ago along with the 40th anniversary special, "A Log's Life" on my DVR. I kept putting off burning the two presentations on to a blank DVD-R because I had it safe and sound on my DVR. So, I thought....My DVR fizzled out on me and I lost everything I had on it, including "A Log's Life" and the newly restored Yule Log. I missed recording it last year and now I am bummed out to hear the only station I could turn to, SuperStation WGN, is not airing it. If anybody has the two shows and would care to share it with me, please let me know. I look forward to chatting with everyone about the Yule Log and the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!! Merry Christmas, Armando |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/23/2008 10:15:41Copy HTML Hello Armando, and welcome to the board! Thanks for contacting Carrie on behalf and in support of our original Yule Log program. When I speak to her after Thanksgiving, I'll get the final update for this year's broadcast and I'll post it on this thread. Again, for this year, I am only hoping to salvage our original soundtrack for this year's WGN broadcast. As I said before in a post on another thread on the board; perhaps if enough people complain (just perhaps mind you) they might go back to the original WPIX Yule Log next year. I have received so many emails recently from folks around the country who don't have a local Tribune affiliate and relied on WGN for the program and are very upset. I feel very bad for them. As far as obtaining a copy of the program, this is the number 1 request that I receive from fans of the Yule Log across the country. However, because of copyright issues and my affiliation with WPIX/Tribune, I cannot provide copies of the program. Sorry I couldn't help you further, buddy. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/25/2008 06:44:51Copy HTML Hello Chip, and thanks again for welcoming me to the board!
I hope you will receive good news when you do speak with Ms. King. At the very least, I hope she will use the WPIX Yule Log soundtrack. Hopefully, more people will let their feelings be known and she will have a change of heart. I understand your position regarding a copy of the program. I respect the rights of copyright owners and do not want to infringe on them. I also respect your affiliation with WPIX and the Tribune company and would not expect you to compromise your relationship with them. Thanks again and let's hope for some good news! Armando |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/26/2008 04:53:20Copy HTML Hello everyone,
I sent an email to WGN too to see if they would change their mind and air the original WPIX Yule Log. This is the response I received: "We aren’t going after a younger generation; we will be playing classic Christmas radio theater as the audio track. Instead of a music track that is available everywhere we are going to offer something that has never been done before." I was hoping for a different response. Hopefully if they receive enough people contacting them maybe we can make a difference. I know Chip is going to contact them after Thanksgiving. Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/26/2008 07:27:15Copy HTML Yes, when I spoke to Carrie earlier this month, she mentioned the Christmas radio theater to me as part of their plans for their Yule Log presentation. It is radio broadcasts of classic Christmas movies from the 1940s. I guess they feel this will be better than playing a music soundtrack. They obviously just want to try something different so as to distinguish themselves from everybody else. What a pity that ego has to get in the way of tradition. Woe is me. The bottom line is that The Yule Log is a New York tradition. It began here and it's uniquely ours, and always will be. We can't control what they might do to the program in other parts of the country; but here, in the greatest city in the world, the flame burns bright and strong with the same unwavering commitment to tradition that it's always had. I just feel bad for people in other parts of the country who will not be able to enjoy it with us. It is because of the wounds we suffered here in New York as a result of 9/11 that WPIX was motivated to bring the program out of its 11-year hiatus; thereby, resulting in its exposure across the country since the station was now part of a national network. So, for all those cities that broadcast our original Yule Log program, as well as the cities that have now created their own local version of the program, a debt of thanks is owed to us here in New York. Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/28/2008 09:01:03Copy HTML I preferred seeing the Yule Log on Christmas Eve night. Still, I'm grateful that it's on at all; I missed it during the years it was off the air, and was so glad to see it return. As I age, little things like this, things that connect me to my past, become very important to me. Too many things have changed--including New York itself.

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/28/2008 09:51:11Copy HTML "Instead of a music track that is available everywhere"
The point is, that the original music isn't available everywhere. Many of those songs are out-of-print. Do they understand that ? I'm thinking of going above Carrie's head, to the CEO of WGN (whoever that is). Carrie King is only the Director of Creative Services, I'm thinking she must have a boss. I hate pulling rank and acting like a renegade, but sometimes you have bypass minions who are clueless, and go directly to the top. I think it's worth a try, since they are so adamant about not using the original music anyway. Maybe someone at the top (the owner of WGN) remembers those songs, and how rare they are, and will understand why they should be played. |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/28/2008 11:38:02Copy HTML Hello Everyone! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
Susan, at least you received an answer. Unfortunately, it's not what we wanted to hear. Hopefully, more of us will email her and it will have an effect. Chip, you are absolutely correct - The Yule Log is a New York tradition that is uniquely ours. Ours is the original, all others are the imitation. I think it is safe to say we are happy to share it with others. Yet, I look at the imitations as a compliment to our original. I believe they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I feel the same way you do, NewYorkDave. As I get older, those things from my youth mean more to me. Probably, because life has changed so much since we were kids. I can imagine New York is not the same anymore either. Glamchild, you might have an idea there. If we can find who the CEO of WGN is and email him/her with our request - maybe, you never know. Once again, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and lets hope we hear some good news! Armando |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/29/2008 06:32:55Copy HTML Chip, thanks for providing those emails. I'm so busy this time of year, and wouldn't have been able to find those on my own !
You know, the more I think about it, I'm thinking that this is the worst response I've ever seen: "We aren’t going after a younger generation; we will be playing classic Christmas radio theater as the audio track. Instead of a music track that is available everywhere we are going to offer something that has never been done before." It really makes me want to do "something that I've never done before"....namely never watch WGN ever again !!!! And, I do watch them from time-to-time throughout the year. But, if they're determined to destroy everyone's Christmas, then they'll simply become another network that I've crossed off my list, and make a point never to watch again. With shrinking viewership for all TV Networks, I wonder why WGN thinks it can afford to irritate loyal viewers? |

If it was any other Tribune station, it wouldn't really matter as much because they only serve a local market. However Superstation WGN (or WGN America as they now like to be called) is carried by the majority of cable and satellite providers across the country. So naturally, the impact of this decision is far greater than any other Tribune station. What's worse is that by setting this example, my fear is that it might start a trend and other Tribune stations might follow suit in subsequent years. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:11/30/2008 02:57:42Copy HTML Well, I am going down the list to the top at WGN. I just sent an email to Kevin Connor. I received an auto-response stating that he is out of the office till Monday and will be reading email when he returns. I included my initial email and the response I received from .
I hope that they are getting a lot of protest from loyal Yule Log supporters and realize what a tragedy it would be not to air it this year. After all, it was a deep tragedy that brought it back for us. Especially people in the NYC area. We don't have much to hang on to in this world, so to speak, and it makes us appreciate things like the WPIX Yule Log even more. Though I have never lived in NYC, I was living in Westchester County when the Twin Towers were being built. We had relatives in Brooklyn and Staten Island and would go down to visit them from time to time during 1970-1975. It was an amazing sight to see the two towers reaching for the sky and it was almost like a contest to see which tower would make it to the top first. I am fortunate enough to have been outside the Twin Towers and looked up to see how high they really were. I am afraid of heights and looking up from the street was almost like looking down from the top and I got dizzy. WPIX was and still is one of my favorite TV stations; though we can't receive it where I live because we have a local CW station. When I lived in VT, (1958-1970 and 1975-1998) we were able to receive WPIX on our cable system and in 1966, I was able to see the first broadcast, and I watched it every year and it brings back some very precious memories from my youth. I'm sure there are other members here who share the same sentiment. Let's hope that enough of us can persuade WGN to change their mind and air the WPIX Yule Log. Christmas isn't just a day in December, it's a way of life. Christmas Isn't Just A Day In December, It's A Way Of Life.

Chip and Susan, I am following your lead and have sent an email to Kevin Connor, Marty Wilke and Ed Wilson. I expressed my desire to see them air our Yule Log. I also expressed to them my gratitude for having aired our Yule Log the last few years and to consider the large viewing audience they have that feel the same way. I also expressed how heartbreaking it is to know they've made the decision to not air it and to reconsider that decision. I hope everyone will follow suit. I hope the higher-ups at WGN America will reconsider. Thanks Chip for providing their names and email addresses. |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:12/04/2008 08:42:34Copy HTML Thanks for the welcome. It's reassuring to know that there are other NY Metro-area natives who feel sentimental over such "silly" things as a film of a burning log ;)
For me, Chip really nailed it when explaining the appeal of airing the log on Christmas Eve night.
It's definitely not the same with the Yule Log being shown on Christmas Day morning. It just doesn't have the same punch as it did when it was shown at its rightful time on Christmas Eve night. It is on Christmas Eve night that one can really enjoy the tranquility, solemnity and reverence of this great holiday. It's like Dory Devlin said in her article on Yahoo.com: "The Yule Log signaled that time had stopped for a while and home was the place to be."
This is so true. Christmas Day itself tends to be rather hectic, often stressful, and (for me) usually feels sort of anticlimactic after the weeks of build-up. Christmas Eve night brings a much mellower and more introspective mood and... well, always felt more magical somehow, at least to me. I think this might even go back to early childhood and the anticipation of that nocturnal visit (haunting?) by a supernatural figure. Nevertheless, since (for only the second time in my life) I won't be spending this Christmas Day with my parents and siblings, I must say that I am happy that the Yule Log--plus March of The Wooden Soldiers, another WPIX holiday classic--will be on the tube as I celebrate a quiet Christmas at home. www.phantomplayland.com

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:12/09/2008 07:25:16Copy HTML Hello Everyone!
I tried to post this earlier and it didn't seem to take. I hope that this does not repeat. I received a response to my emails to Carrie King and Sean Compton. Here is Ms. King's response first - Hi, Armando - Thanks for taking the time to write. I understand and respect your affinity for the WPIX Yule Log. Rest assured, they will continue to air this version. WGN America however, is indeed airing something different. Not for the sake of being different, but because we are taking advantage of the opportunity to bring viewers all over the country some of the classic Christmas radio shows that define the holiday season. Last week we completed a shoot of the magnificent early 1900's fireplace in the office of Col. McCormick at Tribune Tower and we will be posting the show for air this coming week. I'm confident there is plenty of room in the head and hearts of Americans all over this great country to cherish the tradition of the WPIX Yule production while embracing the heartwarming experience we are creating with WGN America's Yule Log: The Golden Age of Christmas. Wishing you, your family, friends and fellow WPIX Yule Log fans a happy and healthy holiday season - Carrie And now, here is Mr. Compton's response - Armando Another fact – last year the Yule Log ran on WGN America from 2:30am-5:30am. The plan this year is to make it a primetime event through the overnight hours. A total of 9 hours. In the past WGN seemed to bury it. Thanks again for writing, I know I’ve upset several people with this decision but it’s a change I feel will generate move viewers and interest vs. music that is available all over radio, tv and ipods. Sean Compton 12-09-08 @ 20:45:49 PM Follow-up to above message: Hi, Armando -
`PIX 11 in NY will air the WPIX Yule Log. WGNA will be airing our new production, "Yule Log: The Golden Age of Christmas."

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:12/16/2008 01:32:14Copy HTML Master Chip? I'm currently in Texas for the holidays. But I do get WGN, is there any way for ME to watch the Yule Log? If the answer is yes, what time and station? If I'm only exposed to WGN's version and not your lovely one, I guess there's no way for me to see it then. Or IS there?
I'm so new here, and forgive me if you've already answered questions like this, but I just wanted to show my strong support for this kind of program. Strange "retro" things have been happening lately in my little neck of the woods. Our Best Buys and CD WAREHOUSES and HASTING's are starting to carry VINYL again, and everyone my age (30s) has been asking me which store I reccomend going to to find Christmas songs of the past; the traditional and beautiful kind. I simply answer, "Come on over to my house." There's something going on with the thrillerbaby generation; the offpsring of the babyboomers. They are now the age that our own babybooming parents were when they raised us, and with new kids of their own. And they want to show those children what true traditional Christmas music IS ... like our BabyBoomers parents showed us, and "their" BIG-BANDER parents (our grandparents) who showed THEM! Even the Donna Reed Show finally got a DVD release for its 1st season a few months ago, and it's a best-seller ... with thrillerbabies being the demographical buying audience! Partly, in my opinion, because Reed is so linked to "It's A Wonderful Life". Those shows had morals and special Christmas episodes and they always ate TOGETHER at the dinner table and conversed thoughts and ideas about their days together. I'm a rather busy person. And have a very busy life. I never got around to catching a single airing of the Yule Log. But now that I'm in my 30s, and was linked to your message board simply by trying to find "A MERRY CHRISTMAS SONG" by The Living Strings and Voices in a digital format, I've made friends and seen so many posts here that prove that it seems to be, even younger generations such as mine, are wanting to curve the world back to more harmony and family-time and tradition and stability (70% of us thrillerbabies were all latchkey kids! We don't want that type of childhood for our OWN kids.) Your landmark play-list should be heard by more people like me. They'd LOVE IT. If am to be able to get you over my TV (and I do have extended cable with music-only channels), can I watch it online somewhere? My favorte thing before I go to sleep at night is to log on here and read about "what new OLD music Master Yoda (that's YOU Chip) are talking about and what everyone's rare requests are!" To know that a simple fake-fire with your perfect and highly skilled playlist could bring the entire nation together, yet apparantly can only be viewed in the bigger cities, just makes HappyTheThrillerBabyJoshua here ... feel rather sad. It are persons such as you Master Yule Logger, that make world a little more hopeful. I only wish there were more people like you in the world who put such thought into your love of the most holy music that only gets played in the mainstream world one month per year. You really should consider somehow finding a way to acquire the rights (even if you have to share them a little) and get all us thrillerbabies a DVD out. I just know they would eat it up. I mean even RHINO might be interested in do this for you. And then all us little fans of yours could do a special feature on the DVD and talk about how import healthy traditional Christmas music is to our many generations here on planet earth that's entire goal is to highlight its true meaning. Sincerely sad, HappyTheThrillerBabyJoshua

Sincerely sad, Joshua, KDAF in Dallas will be airing their own version of the Yule Log, not our beloved New York edition. That's the closest to West Texas you'll find it. Maybe KDAF is on cable where you are. Also, I recommend you go to live365.com and check out "Christmas & Then Some". You'll hear traditional Christmas classics by Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Percy Faith, Bing Crosby and so many others. Audio isn't CD-quality but the music is just what you want. I think you'll like it. |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:12/17/2008 04:29:49Copy HTML Thanks for the kind words Joshua, I appreciate it. To answer your question; the only outlet you have in your area to view the Yule Log is Superstation WPIX. Hopefully, your cable provider carries it. Given your appreciation of classic Christmas music, I know that you would enjoy the program.

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:12/20/2008 04:35:01Copy HTML Hi!
I assume the announcement I saw in the Columbus Dispatch concerning the tv scheduling of the Yule Log for Christmas day...12pm to 6pm. on the ONN network (Ohio News Network) is this Yule Log. ONN is on cable networks all over the state of Ohio. bg614 |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:12/21/2008 02:31:39Copy HTML Welcome to the message board! No, the program you alluded to is not the original WPIX Yule Log; only Tribune stations have the legal rights to broadcast the program. In your area, the only outlet you have to view the program is Superstation WPIX. Hopefully, your cable or satellite provider carries the station. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:03/13/2009 08:25:52Copy HTML Hello Chip! I emailed you back at Christmastime that I had recently moved from Long Island, New York to here in Upstate New York. I was very frustrated at the time as I could NOT find the Yule Log being aired here. I just CAN'T BELIEVE that the Albany, New York area did not get it! I finally had time today to call Time Warner Cable to inquire further. ....Even THEY couldn't tell me anything!!! I am still wondering if you or any of our fellow YuleLoggers might know more about the stations and broadcasts here in the Capital District area of New York. Do we have any members from this area, do you know; Albany and its suburbs? Would love to be enlightened and appreciate any help. |

Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:03/13/2009 11:58:21Copy HTML Hi Marilyn, Glad you liked the website. Unfortunately, in 2006 your local CW affiliate in Albany, WCWN (formerly WEWB), was sold by Tribune Broadcasting to Freedom Communications. As a result, the station lost its rights to broadcast the WPIX Yule Log. And because that now leaves Albany without a locally owned Tribune affiliate, the only way you could get the program now is via WGN America or Superstation WPIX. Hopefully your cable or satellite provider carries one of these two stations. By the way, I just wanted to point out that the 100% guaranteed uptime I referred to in my group email pertains to the main Yule Log.com website only and does not include the Message Board, which is hosted by Aimoo. While they have come a long way since the conversion debacle in November, 2007, there are still times periodically when Aimoo will be down. However, with their greatly expanded and improved servers, down time has been significantly reduced. Changing hosting companies for the Message Board is not an option I will ever consider, as all the thread and post history that has been accumulated since August, 2005, would be lost. Lawrence F. Re:2008 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule Date Posted:09/09/2009 11:20:38Copy HTML Thanks Sandy, but no need to contact WGN America as Sean Compton (Sr. VP of Programming & Entertainment) has told me that his station will indeed once again be airing our original WPIX Yule Log for the upcoming holiday. It will air on Christmas Day morning and as soon as Sean gives the broadcast time, I'll post it on the board. Lawrence F. "Chip" Arcuri
