It is with great pride and joy that I announce to you that I have added a 4th hour to the Yule Log soundtrack. It will premiere here in New York at 12 noon on Christmas Day. This is the first substantive change to the program in 36 years and the biggest single change in its 43-year-old history, as it is the first time that an entirely new hour of classic Christmas music has been added to the broadcast. The Yule Log is now officially a 4-Hour program and the old practice of just repeating previously played music for a fourth broadcasted hour is now terminated.

As a result of its growing popularity, as well as several requests from WPIX over the last few years, I have decided to add a 4th hour of music to the Yule Log soundtrack. This is the first time in 36 years that additional songs have been added to the program.

I actually had total leeway to add a 4th hour of music to the program when we restored the audio soundtrack for WPIX in 2006, but I decided against it because I felt very strongly that my job back then was just to restore the audio soundtrack to its original 3-hour form with as little creative input from me as possible. However, since WPIX and many of the other Tribune affiliates now air the program for more than 3 hours (as a result of its great success in the Nielsen ratings) and are just repeating previously played music, I felt the time was now appropriate to add an additional 4th hour.

This will actually fulfill a lifelong dream of adding music that I've always felt should have been a part of the Yule Log soundtrack all along. There are a total of 23 great classic Christmas songs that comprise this spectacular new 4th hour of music and it boasts some very rare out-of-print gems. In fact, of the added hour’s 23 selections, 8 are currently out-of-print, and of those 8, a total of 6 have never been released on CD before (these 6 songs had to be taken from their original vinyl LPs and digitally remastered especially for this broadcast). The new hour also boasts 9 new artists to the soundtrack, and of those 9, a total of 7 have never appeared on the Yule Log before; they include Bert Kaempfert, Mitch Miller, Bing Crosby, Sammy Kaye, Vic Damone, Johnny Mathis and Mike Douglas. And by the way, for the record, the 2 new returning artists to the program are The New Christy Minstrels and The Living Voices -- both appearing on the Yule Log for the first time in over 40 years.

I just know everyone will absolutely love this new 4th hour of music. It has a good balance of instrumental and vocal tracks and it covers the gamut of emotions -- from reverent to sentimental to joyous, jolly and fun.

Here now is an overview of the newly added 4th hour:

The new 4th hour leads off with a great classic that used to air on the Yule Log in the late 1960’s; it is now restored back to the program to its rightful place: it’s Mantovani’s brilliant interpretation of Adeste Fideles. Songs #2, #13 and #17 are 3 great Ray Conniff classics that are now home to the Yule Log for the first time -- including his definitive version of The Little Drummer Boy. Songs #3, #12 and #22 are the 3 great Christmas originals by Bert Kaempfert -- songs that were absolutely tailor-made for the Yule Log: Holiday For Bells, Children’s Christmas Dream and Jingo Jango. Song #4 is a must for the kid in all of us: Mitch Miller’s Must Be Santa. In keeping with tradition, the reigning King of the Yule Log, Percy Faith, is awarded 4 appearances in the new 4th hour with 4 songs that I have always felt belonged on the program: songs #5, #9, #15 and #23 (by the way, it is also in keeping with tradition that Mr. Faith concludes the Yule Log broadcast). Back on the program for the first time since 1968 are The New Christy Minstrels, but this time with their 2 best songs: Sleigh Ride (song #6) and Here We Come A-Caroling (song #14). Songs #7 and #21 are the 2 greatest Christmas songs that the Harry Simeone Chorale ever recorded; they were recorded exclusively for Goodyear’s 1967 LP, The Great Songs Of Christmas, Vol. 7. One of the biggest omissions from the Yule Log soundtrack these last 43 years was Bing Crosby; however, with song #8 that has now been corrected as Bing makes his first appearance ever on the Yule Log with his great original, A Time To Be Jolly. Also new to the Yule Log is the great Sammy Kaye, and you will absolutely adore these 2 great originals: Santa, Santa, Santa Claus (song #10) and All Around The Christmas Tree (song #19). Another first-timer on the program is Vic Damone, and song #11 is his rousing rendition of Deck The Halls. For the first time in over 40 years The Living Voices return to the program, but this time with their great classic Be A Santa (song #16). Next is the other great omission from the Yule Log soundtrack all these years, Johnny Mathis; song #18 is his reverent and poignant version of O Holy Night. And finally, the wonderful Mike Douglas is awarded a deserved place in the new 4th hour with his jubilant and inspiring Touch Hands On Christmas Morning.

One last note: creating this new 4th hour was extremely difficult as I had a voluminous list of songs that I have had under consideration for several years now, in the event that I was to ever add an additional hour to the program. It took many hours of careful consideration, but I know that the 23 songs that I chose for the final cut were the most worthy of this great honor of now being a part this classic and legendary program. Adding this new 4th hour to the program in 2009, along with my role in the audio restoration of the original 3-hour soundtrack in 2006 and helping to get Mantovani's Christmas Carols LP released on CD this year are the 3 things that I have done in my life of which I am the most proud.

Please think of this new 4th hour of music as a love letter from me to all of you fans who have supported the program all these years. I wish you all very happy listening! Enjoy!!

Posted below is the WPIX-TV station ID break from the 2009 presentation of the Yule Log. In the clip, station news anchors Jim Watkins and Kaity Tong announce the premiere of the new fourth hour of the Yule Log and pay homage to yours truly, Chip Arcuri.  Thanks Jim and Kaity for the nice shout-out and for your support and enthusiasm for our great Christmas tradition, The WPIX Yule Log!

I also included in this clip the first 5 songs of the new fourth hour, leading off with Mantovani's classic, legendary and sweeping interpretation of Adeste Fideles. Monty's impeccable
arrangement of this song is extremely poignant, reverent and wistful and is a heart-wrenchingly quintessential example of his signature sound of cascading, soaring and tumbling violins. It brilliantly reflects something his father taught him when he was quite young: "Put feeling into your music, my boy -- music without feeling is little more than a noise."

The other 4 songs included are Deck The Halls by the incomparable Ray Conniff Singers, Holiday For Bells by the magnificent Bert Kaempfert, Must Be Santa by the wonderful Mitch Miller and Good King Wenceslas by the King of the Yule Log (and of all Christmas music for that matter), the great maestro, Percy Faith. Enjoy!

Wonderful news, Chip!  I also notice that two of the Percy Faith selectons in the 4th hour are from an album called Hallelujah! from 1958.  I can't say I remember that one!  Is it available on CD?  I think Angels We Have Heard on High and Away In A Manger have been played on Sirius/XMs Holiday Traditions.

I'll be looking forward to this year's broadcast!  We'll be watching it while eating breakfast.  It looks like we'll be getting dressed quite late on Christmas Day!

Good King Wenceslas - great unique choice = the song I want remastered by Columbia/Legacy so bad I can taste it!  Bert Kaempfert's Jingle Jango - another obviously excellent choice. Majestic opening by Mantovani. Bing's light-hearted feel-good song, and the superb Ray Conniff Singers.  You did a great job!
Here I thought I was the only person on the planet with a CD stereo copy of "Touch Hands on Christmas Morning" by Mike Douglas - apparently you are too!  Only thing missing was The Hollyridge Strings, but I'll overlook that omission until they get added to the new 5th hour next year!

Bravo Chip!

Two Questions:
Will it be on "WGN America" on cable?  Stereo soundtrack?

Hi Chip...Job well  done!!! I look forward to seeing(hearing) the additional tracks to come. Naturally I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought of this already, but why did you not choose White Christmas by Bing? Having been overlooked in the original 3 hour line-up, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to put it on. Please don't misunderstand, it's just something that made me wonder. Nothing more.

I contacted WGN America and begged them to add the 4th hour - even during the overnight on the 26th, but here's the response I got:

"We're only airing the first three hours on Christmas Day at 8am ET.  Your comments will be forwarded to our management.
Thanks for writing.
George"

I forgot, their management is the old Randy Michaels of ClearChannel Radio 'fame', so probably scrooged on that one. Oh well, maybe some more of us can pester them for a national audience!

Frank:

I have talked extensively about Hallelujah on the message board. It's Percy Faith's other great legendary album, along with Music Of Christmas.

Hallelujah was reissued by Columbia Records in 1965 as Music Of Christmas, Volume 2. Sony Music released it on CD in 1997, but it was only in print for a very short period of time. Copies now fetch big bucks on eBay and Amazon. In fact, the last new copy on eBay went for $227.50. Used copies are currently available on Amazon for more reasonable prices.

Here's an excerpt from a post that I previously filed on the message board about Percy Faith's classic and legendary albums Music Of Christmas and Hallelujah:

In my entire collection, there are only two albums that I do not have the audacity to rate on my scale of 1-10, as they are beyond my ability to apply such an arbitrary number due to the sheer perfection that was achieved in their majesty and reverence of arranging, conducting and performance. They are: "Music of Christmas," originally released in 1954 in mono, then re-recorded and re-released in 1959 in stereo; and "Hallelujah," originally released in 1958, then later reissued in 1965 as "Music of Christmas Vol. 2." To rate these two albums in my opinion, would be like putting a price on the Mona Lisa -- which of course, is priceless. Mr. Faith's third Christmas album was "Christmas Is" from 1966, and I rate this album at 8 on my scale of 1-10.

Johnny:

It was just too late for WGN to add the new 4th hour to their schedule for this year's broadcast.

Rich:

Bing Crosby's best overall Christmas album was his last. And the title song (and best song) from that final Christmas album, A Time To Be Jolly, fit the Yule Log soundtrack like a glove. It's one of the best songs -- Christmas or otherwise -- that Bing ever did.

You're right about Bing's best Christmas LP, it was his least-well-known one, recorded in about 1971 as it featured great renditions of "A Time to be Jolly", "I Sing Noel", and "Round and Round the Christmas Tree" - all "joyful" Christmas music!  During his twilight, he also did a decent version of "When A Child Is Born" for United Artists, and the song that he never got a chance to record in the studio, but only on the TV soundtrack "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy".  Amazing, David Bowie was 30 when he sang with Bing, now Bowie is 62 years old and his "little son" is 39 years old!   I can't even think of two vocalists today that could pull-that off again, yet even come close.

Regarding the Percy Faith Hallelujah album, I once had that one as Music of Christmas, Vol 2.  Forgot about that, sorry!  Perhaps for next year with everyone's cooperation, we can bring that one back to life as well!

Rich,

The closest local Tribune affiliate to your mother is WGN-9 in Chicago. If she has cable or satellite TV, she should be able to view the program via Superstation WPIX or WGN America.

Very cool!  Looks like a very well thought out list.  Should fit in seamlessly with the existing program, looking forward to giving it a listen.  Although, I should point, you have opened a bit of a can of worms, at least for me...  I'm dying to know what songs you had on your long list that didn't quite make the cut...  :)

Also, I should probably thank you for the part you played in getting Mantovani's Christmas Carols released on CD.  I've ben eagerly awaiting the release but was unaware of your involvement in the release...  I should have known better!

Probably won't be too difficult to make up one's own soundtrack based on Chip's tracklist above. Just have to track down the tracks I don't have, edit them together and convert to AC3 (then mux it with video). Don't know if I'll get around to it due to so much going on this time of year.

Hello Chip,

It was with great interest that I looked up your site tonight (ABC news overnight had a story on the WPIX yule log).  We moved to Colorado for a number of years and just figured the yule log was played every Christmas "back east".  When I saw you mention a fourth hour, my immediate concern was that it would not be the great sort of Christmas music played during the first three hours, but a "hip" update.  Thank goodness that is not the case.  After looking over other portions of the site, it seems this is a legitimate tribute to the great Chanel 11 yule log.  Truth be known, when my family first started watching this in the 60's we had a black and white set!

Hello Chip & Everyone,
Just to let you know, we just watched the first broadcast of the log (I recorded it on DVR), and we are now watching live the second broadcast !
I already told the wife & kids to leave me alone so I can enjoy the new 4 th. hour in peace.
I always save the log on DVR from year to year, & replace it with the latest one.
The kids still have to find the hidden pickle on the tree, (Whoever finds it first gets a surprise gift, this year it's a Yule Log tee shirt !!)

Merry Christmas to all & thanks again chip.

Bob, from Pa.

Alas, I wasn't able to watch the whole 3-hours that WGN America aired this morning as our DirecTV DVR reset itself so I lost about 20 minutes.  Fortunately, I do have the 3 hour broadcast from 2006 that I am able to watch at my leisure.

I wish WGN America was able to show the 4th hour but guess I will have to wait 365 more days.  (I'm already counting down for next Christmas)

Anyways, I just want to thank Chip for adding the 4th hour.

Merry Christmas to Everyone.

What is the penultimate song before the third hour ends just before the return of 'Joy To The World'? It sounds like a Leonard Bernstein instrumental piece--with the harpsichord in the middle playing the theme--anyone have the listing?

The 4th hour made me aware of some terrific selections of which I was not aware. A few of them go to the top of my wish list for next year! :)

So thanks, Chip. Take a bow--a very deep one.

Re:***I Have Added a 4th Hour to the Yule Log Soundtrack***

Just after New Year's Day, I did some after Christmas shopping for songs that were used in the 4th hour of the Yule Log and I was surprised to find on eBay a 4 CD various artists set from Sony entitled 101 Christmas Favorites which had 2 songs from the 4th hour: Christmas Is by the Harry Simeone Chorale and All Around The Christmas Tree by Sammy Kaye. I immediately ordered it using the Buy It Now option. Meanwhile, on Amazon, I found 3 CDs that each contained one song from the 4th hour. One Sony various artists CD called A Christmas Festival (and I sure hope that the seller doesn't send me the Arthur Fiedler Boston Pops one of the same CD title) had the other Harry Simeone Chorale song, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer while another Sony various artists CD entitled Classic Christmas had Mike Douglas' song, Touch Hands On Christmas Morning. Finally, I found a BMG Special Products various artists CD called Christmas Magic: A Holiday Collection with the song Deck The Halls by Vic Damone on it. I surprisingly got all of these used CDs pretty cheap from various sellers and I look forward to hearing them all once I get them. Now I still need to order that New Christy Minstrels' Christmas 2 for 1 CD.

Excellent finds, Jerry.

It's too bad that only 2 of these 4 compilations are still in print.

By the way, a correction to your last post: Sammy Kaye's All Around The Christmas Tree is on the 3-CD box set
Classic Christmas, not the 4-CD box set 101 Christmas Favorites as you had mentioned.

You're right Chip. I just got the 2 CD sets (101 Christmas Favorites and Classic Christmas) I had ordered mixed up. There's only 2 songs from the 4th hour of the Yule Log that I cannot find on CD and they are Santa, Santa, Santa Claus by Sammy Kaye and Be A Santa by the Living Voices. Are any of these songs available on out of print CDs, Chip?

No Jerry; as far as I know they have never been issued on CD.

I ran across a Mitch Miller Christmas LP, but "Must Be Santa" was not on the LP. Did he have 2 different LP's, or perhaps it was a later abridged version (like Capitol did to several Christmas LPs - they 2 songs OFF of the re-issues!)

Yes Johnny, Mitch Miller did indeed have 2 Christmas albums. I've talked about both of them on the message board before, click here.

Sorry Jerry, senior moment on my part as I completely forgot about the Canadian CD reissue of the Living Voices LP The Little Drummer Boy. This is the album that the song "Be A Santa" was released on in 1965.

That I forgot about this import CD is especially surprising considering how much money I had to pay to get it. Copies occasionally appear on eBay from time to time; but when they do, they go for big bucks.

Will there be a DVD available with the new fourth hour of music added?

Welcome to the message board.

In answer to your question; no, there will be no DVD.

Unfortunately, the WPIX Yule Log has never been released on home video before; although, we are still hoping that someday it will be. There are so many people just like you who wish to purchase a copy.

In 2006, to commemorate the Yule Log's 40th anniversary, WPIX made a diligent attempt to commercially release the program on home video (concomitant to our audio restoration and the anniversary special). But in the end, it was the prohibitive music licensing fees that ultimately killed the project. And it is these very same fees that will probably make it unlikely that the program will ever see a release on home video.
