Chip,

I'm a long time reader, but I've just now gotten around to posting my first message.

First, I want to thank you for keeping up this site and for all of your work with The Yule Log.  Like so many others who grew up in New York, The Yule Log was an important part of my Christmas Eve.  I truly thank you for helping to keep up and enhance this wonderful tradition.  My Christmas memories come alive every time I watch The Yule Log.

Even though it is only the very beginning of 2015, I've already been thinking how Christmas 2016 will mark the 50th Anniversary of The Yule Log.  Are there any plans in the works for a special celebration?

Personally, I'd love to see a 50th Anniversary television special (much in the tradition of "A Log's Life").  I also think a 50th Anniversary book would be a wonderful idea.  All of the stories, photos, and memorabilia that you have collected for this site would be a great foundation for a commemorative book sharing the creation, history,  and importance of The Yule Log.

I don't know how feasible either idea would be, or how much support there would be for either project, but I'd certainly love to see either or both!  I'm interested in seeing what you think, Chip, as well as what everyone else here thinks about these ideas or something similar.

Thanks again, Chip for all that you do.

-- Billy

Welcome to the board, Billy.

The upcoming 50th anniversary of the Yule Log next year in 2016 is something that I have been anticipating and planning for in the last year.

I was going to announce this later this year, but since I have already been asked this repeatedly via private emails through the main YuleLog.com website and now by you on the message board, I'll announce here that to celebrate the important and historic milestone of The Yule Log's golden anniversary, I have proposed to Rich Graziano (President & General Manager of WPIX) the addition of a new 5th hour to the program for a special 50th anniversary, 5-hour broadcast presentation to air Christmas 2016.

A 5th hour is something that I have been working on for quite some time now and I have pretty much completed it. I have chosen the songs, 22 in all, and have perfectly arranged them as to how I want them to play. The only thing left for the new hour to be fully produced is the final studio production work of the segues between the songs, which takes considerable time to get just right as the program has a certain pace and flow to it. I will do that final production work in 2016 if this proposal to WPIX should ultimately come to pass.

Chip,

This is wonderful news!  I certainly hope that the 5th hour for the 50th Anniversary comes to pass.

Is there anything that we can do as the viewing public to let WPIX know that there is support for this project??

Thanks again for all of your work.

Chip,

I'm guessing that Kay Cooper may still looking through her late husbands things, and it would be nice if there was the original 1966 footage and soundtrack available, not necessarily for an "official broadcast", but for parts of it as an inclusion in a possible Special Golden Anniversary of The WPIX Yule Log.

I do realize that if she does find it, that it might not be restorable due to the breakdown of the film over the years, but maybe good enough to at least get the original songs that were broadcast in 1966.  I also realize that being only something like a 17 second loop that it would be very jerky, but still would be nice to see once again, being I don't remember exactly what it looked like or what the songs were when I watched it's premiere in 1966.

Hello.

As a motion picture / television archivist and preservationist, I would like to let those of you who may be interested know that should the 16mm film of the 1966 Log film resurfaces, there are many advanced techniques that can be used in order to restore it.  Preservation work continues daily on film that goes back to the silent era and on flammable and brittle 35mm nitrate film.

As 16mm color film stock from 1966 would of course be on non flammable safety stock, if it were on acetate (which I'm betting the original negative is), there is a chance the the print made from the negative could be on "estar" stock.  This is a film stock that does not subject itself to what is called "vinegar syndrome", a chemical decomposition that gives off a smell like vinegar.  If the print is also on acetate, it doesn't mean that it has gone vinegar.  These are common occurrences that film archivists deal with on a daily basis.

Should the film be located, the first step would be to digitally scan the print and do a digital clean up.  I saw the loop once in my lifetime and while it would be great to see, the 1970 version is the one that means the most to me.  I love Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" in stereo.  The mono is lovely but the stereo version is the one I grew up with.  Kind of like my feeling about the 1970 Log.

Happy February to all and to all a Goodnight!
