Hi all and Happy Holiday

I am still looking for this last song to complete my re-master of a reel-to-reel compilation my parents and grandparents put together 30 some years ago.  Unfortunately no list to go off of.  It sounds like it was sampled from a record as you can hear some record pops.  So if anyone has a clue of similar artists or where I can start looking I would be very appreciative.

Definitely sounds like a library/production music arrangement.  You may want to share with some of the library music bloggers to see if they recognize it.

I have several LSS Compilation Albums, and this doesn't sound familiar to me.  The Longines Symphonette Society often used the same songs on almost all of their compilations.  For instance, I have "Shell's Wonderful World of Music" and there are 3 Volumes of 2 records each.  Then they also released "Christmas at Home in America" and I have 1 Volume and it is identical to Shell.  I also have "Christmas at the Fireside" and all the songs from the Shell 3 Volume set are in this 4-Record Boxed-Set.

Steve_OGO started a thread about this, and we have both posted images of the albums. and there is also a list of some of the Christmas Albums that LSS released.  http://forum1.aimoo.com/theyulelog/YULE-LOG-HOLIDAY-MUSIC/Longines-Symphonette-Society-1-2255685.html

Not just "some of the albums." In my first reply post on that thread I pretty much listed all of the Longines Symphonette Society's Christmas albums.

Yes, you are right Chip, I was trying to remember the AVON release, and I thought that the songs for AVON that LSS did were different.  I don't have the album ripped yet, so I couldn't compare the music with the others that I have ripped.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

Hi all.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

It has been a few years since I made my original post.  Still looking for this song.  Maybe someone here, new or old members, have stumbled on an lost Christmas Album or something.  Still holding out hope I will find this some day.  Doesn't hurt to ask again.  If anyone has any info I'd greatly appreciate it.

The source is for sure 1975 or before.  I know it was sourced from vinyl.  To me it sounds like some jazz or orchestra with a strong brass, vibes and vocals.

To me the main part of the song sounds like Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.

Thanks

Jeff

Re:Unidentified Christmas/Holiday song

Hi Drummer J:   I checked my own collection of 1000s of songs (Christmas and otherwise) which clock in around 2:46 and no luck.  It sounds very much like a Herb Albert or Tijuana Voices holiday track, which further sounds like a radio station promo outtake (like might have been done for WPAT FM or WNEW AM back in their hey day).   I checked comparable times for songs by both Albert and Tijuana Voices (on Pickwick label) via open sources (including YouTube) and no luck either.  It definitely has that Tijuana type brass, late 60s early 70s wintry holiday vocal to it but not sure.  I would wonder if someone on the Radio Station nostalgia posts or podcasts might recall it as a promo or something similar.  Sorry couldn't be of more help...this blog helped me a few years back with a song I couldn't find...wanted to pay it forward...Regards, Jim in Tennessee by way of north Jersey

I feel almost certain it's in my library. But I went through pretty much all my tracks clocking between 2:42 and 2:50 and nuthin...

Could it be part of a medley? The track on YouTube cuts off the beginning...

I agree that it seems in the Tijuana vein, but then it could be one of those German artists like James Last, etc. who had some Now Sound-y stuff that it reminds me of as well.

Hopefully somebody has, because if I have this one somewhere in my archives, I'll be surprised. Not only doesn't it sound familiar, it doesn't even sound Christmassy. I'm very pessimistic about it being identified, considering all the folks that have listened to it thus far. This one's a tough nut to crack.

Definitely getting a 70's Bert Kaempfert vibe here. Not sure that it's Christmas but try some of his stuff in the 70's. Any chance that you have access to your parents/grandparents records if they haven't been tossed? Maybe you can see what exactly they had that might be close.

Re:Unidentified Christmas/Holiday song

I don't really get Bert Kaempfert from this, that bass just isn't the same way it is on Bert's songs.  It is a very distinctive bass in Bert's orchestra.

I get more of a James Last feel myself.  As Genoman mentions, maybe it isn't a Christmas song, but again, it does have a Christmas feel to it.

I tried listening to several of James' songs, but there are a lot of "Medley's" that he has done and the ooh ooh ooh's just don't sound quite right.

I tried a few different "Brass" bands and the non TJB ones too, but still doesn't sound the same as in the clip that was shared.

Reminds me of what a Canadian radio station use to play in the 1970's CFLG 104.5 Cornwall Ontario.  They have since changed their format.  But I was able to deduce back then that several Christmas songs they played were by Bert Kaempfert (this was before Internet) and my mom had a couple non-Christmas Albums by Bert Kaempfert.  But that very distinct bass made me start looking for Bert's Christmas albums and sure enough, I was right about what I taped off the radio being his Christmas Songs.  In particular, Candy Clarinet.

There were 2 songs that I really liked, but at the time I didn't know whom the artist was and I had thought it was a female. but I eventually found out it was a boy soprano.  Heintje and in the last 10-15 years I was able to find his Christmas Albums.

I had written the station and they had no idea who I was trying to find as they had changed their format.  I am sure they kept archives, but didn't want to be bothered.  But thanks to the Internet, I found those songs and so much more.

Gene:

Sorry, for some reason I thought your comments in your previous post were directed toward me in direct response to my previous post on the thread. Now I understand that you were directing it toward Jeff who started the thread about the unidentified song, and were asking about his grandparents, and not mine. Anyway, yes, the unidentified song does have a little bit of a Bert Kaempfert feel to it, but like Susan said, it's not him.

Susan:

The song "Candy Clarinet" was by Pete Fountain, not Bert Kaempfert. By the way, Pete's 1967 Coral Records Christmas LP is one of the albums that I'm trying to back in print. But going back to the unidentified song; yes, I agree, it has a James Last feel to it also.

I have a song that was recorded from WCTO  Smithtown late 80's . As you can see I also tried to make a yule log a few years ago with not much luck. Never been able to find out who it is but perhaps one of you may. Thanks Bill

Chip,

I forgot that about Candy Clarinet.I meant to say Toy Parade.  I was just listening to Pete Fountain so that was fresh in my head lol.  But a lot of Bert's songs start out with that bass, and though a lot of bass, whether it be a guitar, or a standup slap bass,  etc...  They may be the same note, but Bert's was very distinctive as I previously mentioned.

Part of what makes it hard to identify this song is it is a bit muffled, so you can't hear the clarity as well.  There is a bit of a County bass to it also.  Then, is it really a Christmas tune?

Trying to identify whether or not it is James Last, is hard because most, if not, all his song titles are in German.  Yes, there are the more familiar songs whether or you you read German or not.   "Leise rieselt der Schnee" or "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht"

Chip:

Yeah it has a definite Bert feel but obviously isn't as we've found out. :-) He didn't have much of that distinctive Danelectro bass sound on his later recordings it seems, so it might be easy for the recording to get 'lost' in the sameness of the other type of easy listening tracks of the time.

Still.... 'tis quite the mystery.
