I have an update from Gordon Anderson at Collector's Choice Music on the new Doris Day Christmas CD that they will be releasing for the upcoming holiday season -- and once again, this news is a Yule Log.com exclusive folks, as it has not been announced to the general public as of yet.

Good News! Collector's Choice has added another bonus track: "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm." This now makes the CD a complete anthology of Doris Day's holiday recordings.

By the way, I asked Mr. Anderson about the version of "Deck The Halls" on the CD, and he said that it was indeed the 1959 recording she did with Frank DeVol. That being the case, it really isn't factually correct for them to claim that this is the first U.S. release for this song, as it has already been released domestically on several compilation CDs. Nevertheless, accolades to Collector's Choice Music for an outstanding job on this reissue.

Here is the promo as it will soon appear on their website and in their next catalog:

Your ticket to the greatest Christmas “Day” ever—a 22-track collection containing Doris’ complete holiday-themed recordings, plus some unreleased material! We’ve gone deep into the Columbia vaults and even into Doris’ private collection for this one; the first 12 tracks hail from her beloved 1964 release •The Doris Day Christmas Album•—issued in its entirety on CD for the first time in the U.S.—and include •Silver Bells; I’ll Be Home for Christmas; Snowfall; Toyland; Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!; Be a Child at Christmas Time; Winter Wonderland; The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire); Christmas Present; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; The Christmas Waltz•, and •White Christmas•. Then, •I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm• comes from the ambitious •Hooray for Hollywood• double-album that she recorded with Frank DeVol in 1959, while •Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly• (first U.S. release!) is the only finished song from a shelved holiday album Doris began with DeVol that same year. •Here Comes Santa Claus; Ol’ Saint Nicholas; Christmas Story; Silver Bells•, and •The Christmas Song• (with Les Brown & His Orchestra) are all single sides she cut for Columbia from 1946 to 1950, while •Silent Night• and •Christmas Greeting from Doris• are unreleased tracks, the first from her early-’50s radio show, the second from her late-’60s CBS-TV show. The set winds up with an emotionally-charged reading of •Let No Walls Divide• taken from the all-star Christmas album •We Wish You the Merriest• Columbia released in 1961 to promote stars like Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin and Andre Previn as well as Doris. We can’t think of a vocal star we’d rather have over for Christmas—we think this •Collectors’ Choice Music• exclusive will be a perennial holiday favorite in your home for years to come. Merry Christmas!

And it looks like they're restoring the original LP artwork, as well.  I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

Actually Mike, I inserted a picture of the artwork myself for folks who were not familiar with the original 1964 LP.

However, I have never seen a case yet where Collector's Choice did not include the original album artwork with one of their exclusive reissue CDs. I think they make it a prerequisite in their contract negotiations with the record companies.

Well, it all depends: is CC considering this an expanded reissue of The Doris Day Christmas Album, or a brand-new compilation album that just happens to have all the tracks from that LP?

If it's the latter, I can see where they might feel justified in giving it a brand-new title and cover art.

Incidentally, does anyone else find it rather astonishing that Ms. Day never recorded a version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside", say as a duet with Buddy Clark or somebody?  If any song was tailor-made for her style and persona, it's that one!

Re:Exclusive Update On The New Doris Day Christmas CD

Since the 12 tracks of the original 1964 LP are the first 12 tracks on this new CD -- and in the same original order, coupled with the fact that Collector's Choice Music has always used the original album artwork for their exclusive CD reissues (including the upcoming Hollyridge Strings CD), it seemed a given to me that they would use the original album artwork for this Doris Day CD as well.

However, because Gordon Anderson implied but never really specifically said they would be using the original artwork, I thought I'd ask him about it to eliminate any uncertainty -- and I have to say that I was surprised at the answer, and quite frankly, not very happy about it.

It's basically a proverbial case of good news and bad news:

The good news is that yes, they will be using the original album artwork. But hold on, the bad news is that it will be included on the inside of the CD! -- I mean, you've really got to be kidding.

Here's the bottom line: if indeed the final CD that's issued is as described on the promo that Gordon Anderson sent me (which has the 12 tracks of the original '64 LP as the first 12 tracks on the CD), then there is no two ways about it, this CD is a reissue of "The Doris Day Christmas Album" with bonus tracks; therefore, it should have had the original artwork on the outside -- not inside. Conversely, if the songs were randomly scattered throughout the CD, then it would be fair to describe the CD as a compilation and a change of the title and artwork would be justified.

Here's the problem, and it's the same problem that Stu Phillips himself alluded to when I asked him about why Collector's Choice feels there is a need to remix his Hollyridge Strings album, but it also applies to why they feel they need to update the cover artwork for the Doris Day CD. Here's what he said:

"It seems that all the record companies think that they have to better what was done before."

For me, and other collectors and connoisseurs of Christmas music on this board who are sticklers for the original, this attitude really sticks in our craw.

Oy vey...

Oh, well.  At least they're not omitting the original cover completely.

My primary concern is how the music itself sounds.  I hope the tracks are mastered with care.

The new Doris Day Christmas CD has been posted on several websites; but so far, only Amazon has an actual picture of it:

Yes Maxine, definitely.

All of the original 1964 LP (tracks 1-12 on the CD) are in stereo; as well as bonus tracks 13, 14, 21 and 22; only bonus tracks 15-20 are in mono.

By the way, I meant to tell you the other day that the tracks on the Billy Vaughn CDs "Christmas Songs," "Christmas Classics" and "A Most Excellent Billy Vaughn Christmas" are not from the original 1958 Dot Records LP. They are re-recorded versions that Billy did in the 1960s for JVC Records. The only CD reissues of the original Dot recordings were on a Castle Australia CD and the German Bear Family boxed set.

I understand the traditionalist side of this...but the "new" cover isn't bad-looking at all.  And as long as the music is still there and still good.

Case in point: earlier in the decade, they finally released Dusty Springfield's '70s and '80s albums onto CD.  In America, I believe we only got "Cameo"...except changed to the name "Beautiful Soul: The ABC/Dunhill Recordings" to accommodate the inclusion of an unreleased album.  They also came up with a brand new cover accordingly.  I know it's different (cause it's not just the original album with some bonuses), but still, I could see some Dusty fans being a bit resentful that the name "Cameo" got lost in the shuffle.  But I didn't really.  Cause the music was still classic and great.  (And in all fairness, I DO know many fans could live without seeing the "Cameo" cover, which has been panned by many :-))

So long as it's still Doris, will I want this?  Quizas, quizas, quizas... ;-)

James,

It's very easy for you to say that about the original cover of the Doris Day LP because you didn't grow up with it. This album was released 13 years before you were born, so there's no sentimental attachment to it. I too, think the picture they used on the new CD is a nice one, but it should have been used on the inside of the CD and the original picture used on the outside -- not the other way around. I could understand Collector's Choice using different artwork for the front of the CD if they didn't have access to the original, but they did, so they should have. Amen.

AHEM.  Some of us are very attached to things before our time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, I can see your point, like I said.   That total package is what you remember.  But I still think the music is what counts.  I think given a photo online, a color printer, proper paper, and a photoshop program will give you your own version of the original copy you can use.  If the music was fouled up?  Not so easy.

Hello!

Yes, the music counts, there's no question about that. Yet, I am a stickler for having everything original used in cases like this one. The picture that Collector's Choice Music is using is a nice one, but I agree with Chip. They could have used that picture for the inside cover of the CD and used the original artwork for the front cover. For a company that prides itself in using all original artwork with their reissues, this decision really surprises me.

As I said, I see your stance, as I try to see things from both sides.  I wonder if the company can be contacted about this.  Maybe they can offer both covers, or give people who order from them the option of having the original one.  Some DVDs have done this.

James,

I gather you haven't purchased this CD.

As I said in my posts of 09/19/08 and 12/12/08 on this thread, the original cover was used on the inside of the CD. All one has to do is flip the artwork in the jewel case for it to be on the front. Notwithstanding this, however, Collector's Choice still should have marketed the CD with the original picture on the front, and the new picture on the inside.

No, you did not understand...

I was not taking issue with your opinion of the new picture, but rather when you said this:

"Maybe they can offer both covers, or give people who order from them the option of having the original one. Some DVDs have done this."

Since you implied by your comments about the music that you had this CD it didn't make any sense, as the original artwork is included on the inside.

Yeah I understand now.  I thought it was going to be a non-full-sized version in the booklet.  But thank you for clarifying that.

As for the part about our opinions, that was just saying that we could go on ad infinitum volleying our respective ones about the matter.  Or, "'Knife, Miss Pilgrim'...'Scissors, Mr. Pritchard'" if you prefer (hope you get that reference lest you think I am nuts ;-))

I noticed that Amazon has a listing for what looks like a reissue of the Doris Day Complete Christmas Collection CD that Collectors' Choice originally released in 2008.  The new CD is from Real Gone Music and has a release date of October 30, 2012.  Amazon shows the same track list as the 2008 release, but who knows if that is accurate.  Has anyone heard anything about it?

For this Christmas 2012, Gordon and Gabby are actually reissuing on their new Real Gone Music record label two of their previously released Christmas collections from their days with Collectors' Choice Music. They are the Doris Day Complete Christmas Collection (from 2008), and the Perry Como Complete Christmas Collection (from 2010). Both reissues will feature new CD cover artwork and Perry Como CD will bear the new title, Complete RCA Christmas Collection.

In the coming years, Gordon and Gabby also plan on reissuing more of their previously released Collectors' Choice Music Christmas CDs, including the Mantovani and Hollyridge Strings CDs.
