I guess this could be defined as the not only the worst Christmas movie of all time, but a disgrace to the tradition of Christmas as well. The movie titled "Silent Night,Deadly Night" which was released theatrically in the mid 1980's and gained alot of controversy for its depiction of Santa Claus who goes around committing brutal ax murders! Theaters that showed this movie at the time were picketed and the movie was quickly banned from theaters almost immediately. Naturally, I could not help but wonder what all the hype was about so I decided to rent the movie on video and I was sorry I ever did! It was sad to know that Hollywood spent any kind of money to make a totally senseless movie like this as well as having it followed by 3 sequels. The second part incorporatin much of the footage used in the 1st movie. Needless to say, if you ever come across it at your local video store, AVOID IT!!!!

I still recall how they started promoting that sorry movie.  It was the first Sunday in November and as usual, I was watching the Giants' game.  All of a sudden, the commercial for "Silent Night, Deadly Night" comes on.  The evening news showed parents picketing theatres showing it.  It probably wasn't in theatres more than a week.  "Silent Night, Deadly Night" should never have been made, much less released!

I didn't know they actually made three sequels.  I never saw the original, never wanted to, and never will!

The second SN,DN is even worse, but memorable for a certain YouTube meme.  I got two words for you: "GARBAGE DAAAAAAY!"

Anyone ever see "Santa's Slay?"  Yet another Christmas horror movie, this one starred Goldberg (the wrestler) as an evil Santa...as in Santa Claus was ALWAYS meant to be evil, but he gave presents and all cause he lost a CURLING MATCH (yes...) to an angel.

I think anything seen on Lifetime as an original movie could probably go here too ;-)

Ha, yeah, I saw SANTA'S SLAY last Xmas. Was pretty ridiculous and the cameos at the beginning are the best part. Poor Fran Drescher...

Honestly, what kind of people want to see Christmas horror movies like "Santa's Slay", "Silent Night, Deadly Night" and the sequels that followed?  Do these viewers hate Christmas more than Ebeneezer Scrooge?  What does this say for the makers of these films?

A good horror movie is one thing, a Christmas horror movie is entirely another!

What's wrong with a horror film that takes place at Xmas time? Horrific things happen at all times of the year. Not to mention it can be a great horror/thriller device -- Xmas is usually when people are expecting nothing but nice things to happen, so having people deal with horrific things catches them (and viewers) off-guard. I see nothing wrong with making a horror film that takes place at Xmas -- it just has to be GOOD! lol

And, I honestly think Bob Clark (RIP, he and his son were killed by a drunk driver just last year, I think it was) has made two of the greatest Christmas films -- A Christmas Story and Black Christmas (the original from 1974).

Hey, Bgart...thanks for your worthless input to associating horror with Christmas. I'm sorry to be so sensitive, but let me put it this way...if the producers and/or director came to me with a role like that sicko played in SN DN, I would have told them to take the role and shove it!!! If you feel that the movie had no affect on audiences be they children or adult, then it's obvious you have the same level of Christmas spirit as the jerk who played Santa in that turkey movie which amouts to a big ZERO!

Well, we are all entitled to our own opinions. I'm sorry you feel that way. I didn't realize this could be such a sensitive issue. Moving along...

How about the dubbed Mexican movie from the '50s, "Santa Claus"?  It BELONGED on Mystery Science Theater 3000, that's all I have to say about that.  (It does remind me, however...I just put links to that and the other MST3K Xmas episode up in the thread I made on the topic.  Check it out NOW NOW NOW!!! ;-))

The absolute pits of Christmas movies has got to be the 1973 TV version of "Miracle on 34th Street." Absolutely charmless, a chore to sit through. It was brought out of well-deserved retirement last season and broadcast on My9. I did sit through it, but oh did I regret it.

JMFabiano already mentioned the Mexican Santa Claus, so let me go ahead and submit that *other* MSTed "classic", Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Oh, and how about Die Hard?

I wouldn't be so fast to group Die Hard into the aforementioned list of violent or brutal "Christmas" films. While the events of Die Hard take place at, and around, a Christmas Party, the holiday serves only for a backdrop and context for the actual events of the film. While other films like SN:DN or Santa's Slay use Christmas themes and iconography as the driving force behind  their plots, Die Hard uses it only to explain why the protagonist is in town and why everyone is in a tall building so late into the evening.
I have heard alot of talk recently about this film being grouped in with "Holiday movies" and I don't really see it.  Although brutally violent, Santa's Slay IS a Christmas film...albeit a poorly made and inappropriate one. Die Hard is just an action movie with events that just happen to occur during the Holidays...............and its a darn good action film at that.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers and yippee ki yay

I thought that Deck The Halls movie with Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick a few years ago was pretty bad.

I'm not sure why Silent Night Deadly Night was received which such shock and dismay by the public in 1984.  It's not like it was the first slasher film to use Christmas iconography.  There was Black Christmas and Silent Night Bloody Night in 1974, Night Train Murders in 1975, Christmas Evil (a.k.a. You Better Watch Out) and To All a Good Night in 1980, and a month after Silent Night Deadly Night was released, Don't Open Till Christmas hit theaters to virtually no reaction.  Frankly, I'm with bgart.  I don't think there's anything wrong with a Christmas horror film per se.  Besides, all of these movies profane Santa Claus and the more secular aspects of Christmas; I have never seen one that was outright sacrilegious in the Christian sense.  Most of them are just objectively bad movies, though.  Even if Silent Night Deadly Night had nothing at all to do with Christmas it would still be a lousy film.  Personally, I prefer Gremlins and Child's Play.

Chiming in a year or so after other posts chiming in a year or so after the original post... (that was a little redundant)

I don't generally care for Christmas slaughter stories, particularly ones that involve Santa as a serial killer, or a Snowman that has blades for arms. But I'm not opposed to the idea. Gremlins which has already been mentioned, utterly terrified me as a kid, but I still like it as a Holiday film.

And on a side-note... I don't know what rating or what the imagery would've been like, but I have always wanted to see an actual film made of "The Night the Reindeer Died," every bit as campy as the trailer implies (as seen in "Scrooged"). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baFmgjwptic
