Did I read that right?

A full eight hours of The Yule Log on Seattle TV?!

Seattle/KCPQ ~ 4am-12pm

I'd better figure out how to hook up an antenna to this hand-me-down TV I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

Will,
Do you have an HDTV?  or if it is an old style TV with channels 2 - 13 and 14 -69 than you will need an Analog to Digital Converter Box.

But if you have an HDTV, they usually will have a built-in Analog to Digatal tuner that you just connect an external antenna to, it doesn't necessarily have to be anything fancy, and a Rabbit Ear antenna should work just fine.

The only problem with Over the Air Digital TV stations is they are a lot less powerful than their predecessors and are not as reliable for picking up.  Even sometimes just walking by the indoor antenna can interfere with the signal and it will pixelize and the picture might freeze.

I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but I am including a link that shows the local TV channels in your area that are free and over the air.  They mostly broadcast on the UHF channels and then get down converted to their prospective VHF channel for the most part but some may be on a different channel than what they were before this dumb Digital Transition.

In my opinion, it was a huge mistake because a lot of people live in valleys so they can not get Satellite TV, or they are too far away from the Cable and Fiber Optic TV providers to run their lines, so they can't get any TV at all.

Analog TV was the best and worked perfectly, for the most part for about 60 years, and you could pick up TV stations with an indoor antenna from well over 100 miles away.  Now if they are within 20 miles,  you might be able to pick them up.

Also you can't count on where your local TV Station is located because that is just their studio's, and their transmitters are usually somewhere high up on a mountain or in the case of a huge City, on one of the tallest buildings in that area,

I do receive WPIX from Dish Network, even though I am not anywhere near Manhattan, but also receive Antenna TV over one of our local TV stations, but that signal isn't 100 % reliable, but at least I have 2 options to watch and also DVR The WPIX Yule Log.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Merry Christmas

Chip,
We watched WPIX's broadcast of the Yule Log and it went of without any glitches.  Being we only get the SD channel it had black bars all around it, but the WPIX Logo was on the screen and beyond the black bars.

I just quickly scanned through our Antenna TV affiliates broadcast and the audio was fine but the level would fade in and out several times.

This broadcast did fill the screen though.  Then not 2 seconds after the last song, they went right into Father Knows Best.  There isn't enough of a gap to get a good transfer to DVD because the authoring program I use sometimes will cut off a second at the end, and with a longer gap between I would be able to get the full program.  But now when I transfer it to DVD I might end up with a couple frames of Father Knows Best.

I hope any other Antenna affiliates didn't have any glitches.

Re:2015 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule (Local Coverage)

Cable subscribers who have the on screen TV Guide got a bit of a scare Christmas Eve.  When I checked the listings for PIX 11, no Christmas programming was shown, no Midnight Mass from St. Patrick's and no Yule Log!

I went right to the PIX 11 website and everything we expect on Christmas Eve and Day was listed.  All was well!

Anyone else have the same experience?

Though I don't live anywhere near NYC, I have Dish Network and our Guide showed the correct programming for WPIX.   They used to get their Guide information from Tribune, but now it is via Gracenote.

Hi Susan,
Comcast apparently gets its information from TV Guide, since the TV Guide logo appears on the screen.  I'm pretty sure the same is true for Cablevision and Time Warner.

Susan:

Yes, thankfully, the PIX broadcast came off this year without a hitch.

As for the Antenna TV broadcast, it was from a new print. The previous copy had small audio glitches in it, so I had PIX engineering in New York send Antenna TV engineering in Chicago a brand new print.

Frank:

Yes, the TV Guide cable info incorrectly showed the regular PIX schedule yesterday.

Chip,
I hope I'm not sounding redundant, but do you think there was a problem with this year's Antenna TV's broadcast, even with it being a brand new print?  Or, might if have been a "Local" problem?

The audio wasn't choppy at all, just faded in and out and I had to raise and lower the volume on my TV.  It was otherwise perfect.  I didn't notice any commercial breaks, and was pleased that it did fill the TV screen without the black bars on all four sides of the video.

No Susan, there was no problem with the official Antenna TV broadcast. The flagship Antenna TV broadcast is here in New York and it was perfectly fine. Any problems that may have been experienced with local, small market, independently owned affiliates are just that, local, and endemic to that area.

Thank you Chip,
EDITED by Christmas Always.

This is my initial reply:

Sadly, it has to be a problem with our local affiliate.  I guess I can try to somehow use the WPIX broadcast's audio being the Antenna TV broadcast did fill the screen, and then try to author another DVD using the two different Video and Audio sources.  I always set my DVR to record 4 minutes before and after the program to make sure that I don't miss anything, so there shouldn't be too much of a difference in syncing them.  Yes I do prefer WPIX's broadcast, but it had the black bars on all four sides, and even stretching the video, it doesn't fill the TV screen.

I believe if we were able to get WPIX in HD, that would take care of the black bars, even though the true aspect ratio is 4:3 if I'm not mistaken.  this it the only years it didn't fill the screen with WPIX.

Thank you again.
.
This is my edited reply:

I just remembered something that sometimes happens with my DVR.  If I fast forward through a longer program and then play sections, Dish Network sometimes will either have no audio or it will fade in an out.  So, I'm happy to report that the Antenna TV broadcast didn't fade in and out.  There was just a little distortion though, so I don't know if their "Gain" was up too high or not.  I didn't notice it with WPIX's broadcast.  Other than that the Antenna TV broadcast was fine.  I just watched the entire four hours and no fade in or out of the audio.
