Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Date Posted:11/12/2012 03:29:11Copy HTML

Chip,

I'm surprised that KTLA isn't going to broadcast The Yule Log this year.  I still have 3 possibilities of watching and DVR'ing it though because of Dish Network.  I get WPIX and KWGN and over the air, I get Antenna TV and as long as the weather is good, I should have a very good chance of getting to see this years broadcast.  I do have a Digital Over The Air module in my Dish Network DVR so I can also record the sub-channel of my local channel because Dish Network only has to give us the actual local channel and not the sub-channels.

I just hope that my DVR doesn't tell me it's a duplicate program and not let me record it because when I DVR shows like Burns and Allen, being they are on the same time each day Tuesday - Friday and then on Saturday, I just set it to record each day Weekly, but if it detects a duplicate episode, it automatically skips it.

I do have 1 question though, you show KWGN broadcasting The Yule Log on Christmas Eve morning from 9am to 10am and then Christmas Day, 5am to 9am.  Do you know what hour they are going to show on Christmas Eve morning?

Susan,

KTLA shows their own version of the Yule Log; not our original 1966 WPIX version.

I had that been under the impression that the Tribune owned Stations agreed to carry The WPIX Yule Log, but then rmember that WGN America did't always carry the broadcast, but WGN in Chicago does.  So no Antenna TV is where people who depended on WGN American for the broacast will be able to watch The Yule Log.

Susan,

The only stations that are authorized to broadcast the original WPIX Yule Log are Tribune owned stations. However, these stations have the option of either not airing it at all (as with KIAH, KSWB and WTIC) or airing a knock-off version of the program (as with KDAF and KTLA).

By the way, I just noticed that I failed to answer your question in your post of 11/11/12 about which hour of the Yule Log KWGN in Denver will broadcast on Christmas Eve morning. It will be the first hour.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Thanks again Chip,

I thought that all Tribune owned CW stations were supposed to broadcast The Yule Log so that most areas across the States would get a chance to see the program.  Being we didn't have Antenna TV.

I remember something from "A Log's Life" about how the program started on WPIX and then over the years expanded across the country and they had lines showing which states carried the program.  But I knew that non-Tribune owned CW stations were not allowed to carry the program.  It's a shame that these other stations are doing their own version, but hopefully, Antenna TV will be available in those areas so most people will get a chance to see the program.

I hope that is some areas that Antenna TV has the capability of broadcasting in HD but ours is only SD or 4:3 screen ratio being the programming they show was made for SD Analog TV's.

On my station with the Digital to Analog converter box, I can change the ratio to 16:9, but all that does is make the SD image fit the HD screen so it really isn't HD.  But even that is better than not watching The Yule Log at all.

Susan,

I don't know how you could have gotten the impression that all Tribune owned stations were required to air the program. Every year when I post the Yule Log schedule -- including this year (see my opening post above), I always denote at the bottom of the post which stations are not showing the program.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Chip,

I'm thinking because of what I already mentioned from "A Log's Life" about how it started with WPIX and then slowly expanded across the USA. (Paraphrasing myself)

I do understand that you post a listing of the stations that will be broadcasting The Yule Log, but being I get WPIX and now Antenna TV, I guess I subconsciously didn't see I anything I wasn't looking for because it was like proofreading, and mentally, I see things and my mind misinterprets them.

I'm also preoccupied with somethings going on and I'm getting confused when I am doing things online and I don't realize it until after it's too late and then pointed out to me.

I try to do some things online to take my mind off certain things, but it doesn't always help.

So I apologize again.

Hoping against hope that Antenna TV gives us the *complete* four-hour program, with no screwups like last year.

I am not leaving anything to chance this year. I have been working closely on this with Sean Compton (President of Programming) and Tom Boyd (Sean's assistant) at Tribune in Chicago to make sure that the same technical glitches that happened last year with the broadcast do not happen again.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Chip,

I may be misinterpreting your response to Michael, but I think he might be under the impression that "WGN America" will be broadcasting The Yule Log because of the way he worded his question.  Michael, if I'm wrong, I ask your forgiveness and yours too Chip.

I Know above at the beginning of this thread, that you did a list of all the stations and then also Antenna TV.  I don't know if Michael is thinking that WGN America is going to broadcast it or not, being he said in his message "One little Question,Chip, will WGN America be including the 4th Hour this year?" or if he realizes that he will need to be receiving Antenna TV in order to watch the broadcast this year.

I'm not trying to imply that anyone is, I don't want to use any word, but they might be thinking what WGN America will indeed be broadcasting The Yule Log.  Also, I don't know if a lot of members realize it or not but if their Cable, Satellite or Fiber Optic Television Provider carries WGN, that it is actually WGN-America.  And only people in the Chicago area actually receive WGN regardless whom is their TV provider, but everyone else gets WGN America.

I have Dish Network and in the guide it shows WGN, but it is definitely WGN America because of the Station Logo, and also if I were to go to WGN Channel 9 in Chicago and click on their Schedule, it's completely different programming than what I am getting except for when they do their local news.  Then both channels/networks are broadcasting the same thing.

Susan: Thanks! I hadn't noticed that Michael mentioned "America" after WGN.

Michael:

The WGN television coverage that I mentioned in the schedule in my opening post is for local WGN-9 (Channel 9) in Chicago only. The national television coverage on cable station WGN America has been replaced with the national television coverage on Antenna TV.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

You're welcome Chip,

It's really weird, that being ill, I can't remember things of that I own and then I will type something and it comes out all wrong, but I was able to notice Michael specifically mentioning WGN America.  Go figure huh?.  The mind does strange things when one is ill.

It would be nice if Antenna TV would have the equipment to broadcast The Yule Log in HD.  I know our Cable company gave us an SD and HD of MeTV, but what they did was show the program in 4:3 ratio, then have the call letters going sideways in the area on both sides of the 4:3 image and also HD was sideways.

For Antenna TV, I have to pick up over the air being it's a sub-channel of our local station and though I've seen commercials in Letterbox, the screen ratio is still 4:3 instead of 16:9.  But as I mentnioned earlier, I can stretch the screen to 16:9 ratio, but it's still only 4:3 ratio, technically.

Dish Nework doesn't give us the secondary channels either but I can still DVR it using the OTA Module and I actually get 100% on the signal strength.  Being the transmitter is only about 7 -10 miles from where I live, but our other local are well over 25 miles away and I have a hard time receiving them.

Another good thing is even though Antenna TV, WPIX and KWGN are all SD, they do at least have Stereo Audio.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Date Posted:12/12/2012 02:28:47Copy HTML

Micheal,

I know before the "Digital Transition" you probably could have picked up WPIX from NYC as it is only 114 miles from NYC to Hudson but Antenna TV has an affiliate in Albany which is 149 miles from Hudson.  So I doubt you would be able to pick up ether WPIX or WNYA even with an outdoor directional antenna because Digital TV transmits at a much lower wattage than Analog TV did and their antenna towers are much shorter.

Digital TV at maximum only transmits at 1000KW and when they were Analog, they were transmitting in the 300,000KW range to the 400,000KW range so it was a lot easier to pick them up.

But WNYA in Albany is on channels 15 and 51-2 and on Verizon FIOS, Channel 482

It's such a shame that more local TV stations won't carry Antenna TV on one of their sub-channels.  I am fortunate to get it on the sub-channel of our NBC affiliate, and though I get the Superstation Package,WPIX, WWOR, KWGN, KTLA and WSBK from Dish Network, they don't give us any sub-channels of our local channels.  So I have to pick it up over the air with a Digital to Analog converter box and connect that to my VCR.

I have a Digital to Analog Tuner Module in my DVR that will pick up our local Digital channels, but if I try to DVR both WPIX and Antenna TV, or WPIX and KWGN, I might get a message "Duplicate Event" and it won't record one of them.  So though I have 3 channels for watching The Yule Log, I will be watching WPIX and DVR'ing it and also have KWGN on the other tuner and then Antenna TV on my VCR so I should have at least one good broadcast to watch.

Unfortunately, they are all in SD, because I do not live in NYC or even close, Dish Network can only give us the SD feeds of these networks and then our Antenna TV affiliate shows programs that were done in 4:3 ratio, so there is no need to broadcast is HD being there would be black bars on the sides of the image.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Date Posted:12/17/2012 03:22:20Copy HTML

Chip,

I have my DVR set to record WPIX, KWGN and Antenna TV being the time difference between here and Denver, but the way The Yule Log is showing in my guide, is showing at 11:00 am to 12:00PM on the 23rd.  Which I understand is because of the time difference, but on the 25th, it's on at 7:00 am to 8:00 AM and then 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  I have selected both of the times, but I'm wondering if the if the 7 am is a repeat of the Christmas Eve Day morning broadcast.  Also, if I DVR a program that is on the same channel right after another, it usually cuts off part of the beginning of the second program because it was at the end of the previous program.

Do you think I should just go with the 8:00 am to 12:00 pm broadcast and forget about the previous hour?

Susan,

I checked in with Denver and they will be airing Hour 1 of the program on Christmas Eve morning from 9am-10am (CST).

And then the next morning, on Christmas Day, they will repeat Hour 1 from 5am-6am (CST), followed by Hours 2, 3, 4 of the program from 6am-9am (CST). And finally, from 9am-10am (CST), they will repeat Hour 1 of the program again.

Re:2012 Yule Log Broadcast Schedule

Thanks Chip

So, it will be out of order on KWGN.  I do hope to burn it to a DVD but don't necessarily need KWGN's version since I will be DVR'ing WPIX and Antenna TV's versions, so as long as there aren't any glitches, I will have a good copy of this years broadcast too.  I wish I had the foresight to Video Tape all the episode from when I first got a VCR WPIX did the last broadcast in 1989.  But I only have maybe 2 - 4 of them if they didn't get destroyed.  I might even have a couple of cassettes where I taped the music from WPIX-FM, but not sure because I didn't get into taping radio broadcasts until the middle 1970's.

Thanks again.  I will also set up my VCR for Antenna TV also just in case my DVR messes up the Antenna TV Broadcast because other programs I DVR from Antenna TV sometimes play back choppy with a pause for a second and then continues.
