I love, love, love this news. We get the Yule Log online on Xmas eve  (first time since 1989 on xmas eve from what article says) and after a fun filled day of Yule Log, March of the Wooden Soldiers, the fantastic Disney's "A Christmas Carol", we get the long lost "Magic Garden Xmas special at 6! I , for one, have never seen this. I wish it was on earlier right after the Yule Log, but I understand.
Yippee!!!!

Hey Capman,
PIX11 will be airing the Yule Log on Christmas Eve, but I believe it's only streaming on pix11.com.  It's not on TV until Christmas morning.

Patrick,

Rob's post is misleading: he does indeed say in the thread title as well as in the body of his post that the Yule Log will air online on Christmas Eve. However, he then refers to an article that says it is the first time this has happened since 1989; and that latter statement implies that the program will be on television on Christmas Eve.

**First of all, the Yule Log will not air on Christmas Eve on TV; it will only be available as a live stream on the WPIX website.

**Second, the last time the program aired on TV Christmas Eve was 1988, not 1989. In 1989 (the last year the program was broadcast before it was taken off the air) it only aired on Christmas morning.

Hi Chip and all,

I did not mean to mislead, just to inform what is in the article from WPIX. Personally, i am excited all around.

Chip, Was the main reason they took it off Xmas eve because they could gain more ad-rev?

Thanks,
Rob

I used to love "The Magic Garden" and even Officer Joe Bolton and Captain Jack McCarthy (spelling) after coming home from school.

It would be nice if WPIX had the entire archive of "The Magic Garden"  I can still remember some of the songs from the program too, and that was at least 40 years ago, but I can't remember what I did yesterday lol.

As for having The Yule Log on Christmas Day, I love it because it is nice to have it playing while opening presents.  Though too having it on Christmas Eve, especially back in 1966, just made going to sleep more exciting for an 8 year old because I knew that Santa would have come when I woke up.

And now, since I make a DVD of each year's broadcast, I watch it during the year and even when wrapping Christmas presents to send my family.

One other program I miss was the live broadcast of The St. Patrick's Day Parade on WPIX.

I never got into the Intelevision "PIX" game though being I was older then, and it was too hard to be home, if I remember correctly, you sent it a postcard and if they drew yours, they would call you, or was it that you had to call in and it was too hard to get through.  I think it was the latter though.

But at least we still get The Honeymooners and "March of The Wooden Soldiers/Babes In Toyland"

I have the Magic Garden Christmas Special on videotape but it's missing the last few seconds of the closing credits though so WPIX's re-airing of the "lost" special at 6 PM on Christmas Day will be an upgrade to the copy I have now unless WPIX makes some edits to the special so they can add more commercials. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, you will enjoy it. It is worth the 32 year wait if you are a big Magic Garden fan. Get your DVRs and DVD recorders ready for this one for there's no telling if WPIX will show this again in future Christmases.

I have a program from WGN in Chicago, which was at one time one of the few stations where people who didn't live in the NYC area were able to view The WPIX Yule Log. and in 2005, WGN and WGN America did a program called "Bozo, Gar and Ray", and I was fortunate enough to be getting WGN on Cable and I video taped it, but being it was I believe more than 2 hours, I had to use a slower recording speed on my VCR. but a couple years back, WGN and WGN America re-broadcast the program, and I was able to DVR it.

It was nice seeing clips from the Bozo Show, and they even showed the full versions of Suzy Snowflake and Hardrock, Coco and Joe and it was nice that they repeated it again without adding any extra commercials, so this time I was able to get it in a much higher quality.  I still have it on my computer, but need to edit out the commercials and burn it to a DVD.

I wish WPIX would re-broadcast the special "A Log's Life" and maybe even add more footage to it.  Though I also have that on a DVD that I made and edited out the commercials.

They just don't have these great programs on TV anymore.  It is all Reality stuff, and competition shows and when they put someone down, they humiliate them in front of a live audience, and in front of millions and millions of TV viewers and they do it in the cruelest way possible and shatter these person's lifelong dreams.  Yes, some of them don't have talent, but there are more tactful ways of letting them down and not humiliating them.
Going back The Magic Garden Special, I hope it isn't edited for more commercials to be fit in, though I didn't see it the first time, it would be nice to see some of the old clips again and bring back some memories from my youth and teen years.  I see an occasional clip on YouTube, but it only makes me want to see the entire program all over again.

I think it's a wonderful thing that The Yule Log aired on Christmas Eve and Christmas Night on PIX11.com.  For so many people who watched The Yule Log on WPIX from 1966 to 1989 and have moved far from the New York area, this is welcome news.  Now it won't matter if they now live in an area not served by a Tribune station.  All they need is a computer, smartphone, tablet or Internet-enabled TV.  Ain't progress great?

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!  Happy 2014 to all!

Re:Yule Log online on Xmas Eve, and THE MAGIC GARDEN special on Christmas!

Date Posted:12/29/2013 11:49:36Copy HTML

I finally sat down and watched my old video copy (with half of the closing credits missing) of the 1981 special, A Magic Garden Christmas, and compared it to the 2013 rebroadcast that WPIX had shown and I had noticed some edits, some major and some small. The first edit I had noticed was that there was a scene cut where Carole and Paula walk over to the Christmas tree in the "garden" studio and briefly talk about the day they went out and found the tree. That cut scene was replaced by time for commercials. The most major change in the 2013 airing is the music changes in the outdoor on location scene where Paula tells Carole, "I'll race you down the mountain". The song in the original 1981 cut of the special was "I'll Race You Down The Mountain" but it was replaced in 2013 with a song medley which included the songs, "Jack and Jill", "The Grand Old Duke Of York" and some other songs. I'm assuming both WPIX and CAP Productions had lost the copyright clearance to the "I'll Race You Down The Mountain" song and had no choice but to replace it with other songs. Immediately following that "Mountain" song, there was an outdoors scene where Carole and Paula perform another brief song (unforunately, I don't know the song's title) which was edited out of the 2013 airing. Back in the "garden" studio, a segment dedicated to Hanukkah was completely edited out of the 2013 rebroadcast. The scene had Carole and Paula exchanging gifts by the fence to the right of Sherlock's tree. Paula's gift to Carole was a (please pardon my spelling if I get this wrong) dradel and they go over to the storybox to spin the dradel and sing the "Dradel, Dradel, Dradel" song. That scene was followed by the Chuckle Patch scene which was left in the 2013 airing but you clearly see Carole and Paula's feet walking over to the patch from the left of the screen where they just finished the Hannukah portion of the special. In the 2013 airing, Carole and Paula were last shown by the fence which proves that there was an edit there. Finally, the last difference between the original 1981 airing and the 2013 rebroadcast is the font style of the special's closing credits. In the 2013 version, the closing credits' font style is smaller and seems to contain more credits and more names plus the copyright says both "1981, 2013" on it. In the 1981 airing, the font style used in the closing credits is vastly bigger in size but my copy is missing half of the closing credits which is a shame but it's better than nothing. I'm assuming that the edited scenes were cut out so they can have the 2013 interview with Carole and Paula plus the addition of more commercials. The Hanukkah scene was probably removed because the holiday had already passed by the time this special reaired on Christmas evening. Maybe WPIX will show it again next holiday season prior to or during Hanukkah so that Jewish members of the Tri-State Area who grew up watching The Magic Garden can see this moment which was trimmed from this year's rebroadcast. Perhaps CAP Productions in association with Tribune will release the entire special on DVD next holiday season, hopefully with the original "I'll Race You Down The Mountain" song intact along with the Hanukkah portion of the special.
