How about The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant Loretta Young and David Niven?  That movie is a Christmas mainstay in my family.

Welcome to the message board, Paul!

You probably didn't notice, but this great movie was previously discussed on two threads: click here for the first and click here for the second (scroll down to the first post dated 10/13/08).

Having been raised a Catholic, I've always had a problem with this movie.  I may watch it some day anyway.

I was raised a Catholic too, and I have never had a problem with this movie because of that. It does nothing to slam or denigrate the Catholic Church in any way.

It's too bad you cheated yourself out of the pleasure of such a great movie because of these erroneous misconceptions.

Tolerance is a virtue.

for the welcome Chip.  I grew up with the Yule Log in Queens, NY (my wife is from Oregon and still scratches her head...LOL).  Sorry I was still trying to navigate the message boards and didn't see that it was posted already.

I too was raised Catholic and consider myself pretty devout today (a revert) .  If it helps Loretta Young wasvery Catholic also.  I like to think of the bishop as Anglican and with the Vatican allowing Traditional Anglicans to convert to the Church (read the recent headlines), maybe that will make it a little more palatable to watch.  It's a really wonderful movie (in my humblest opinion).

Chip this is an AWESOME site!  I wish I could get the Yule Log (even with my wife teasing) here in Northern Virginia.  Too bad we can't get it streaming online.

Yes, I am fully aware that Loretta Young was indeed a very devout Catholic. A priest friend of mine, Father Benedict Groeschel, was a very good friend of hers and a spiritual adviser to her.

However, in the end, it really doesn't matter of what religious affiliation Ms. Young was, or for that matter, David Niven or Cary Grant. In the end, it was just a great classic Hollywood movie -- very well acted, directed and produced.

Many non-Catholics and even non-Christians have contributed significantly to the celebration of Christmas. The very best example is the great Maestro Percy Faith, who was Jewish and yet was solely responsible for the greatest Christmas music ever recorded. Another great example is Irving Berlin, who also was Jewish and yet wrote one of the greatest Christmas classics of all-time, White Christmas.

Oh I'm sure you knew she was catholic.  I agree on all accounts with you.

You're friends with Fr. Groeschel?  WOW!  Talk about pressing flesh with famous people.  I'm an EWTN groupie of sorts.
