Hi Chip,

I recently purchased a used copy of Mantovani Christmas Carols on vinyl and it sounds as though the mix for "O Holy Night" is different than what is heard on the program.  I have a copy on my Ipod from a CD that sounds exactly like the one we all know and love. Question: was this LP remixed at some point in time?  The previous owner wrote 11-24-62 on back of sleeve.  Thanks for any info you could provide.

Henry

Henry,

Please advise what catalog number you have; it will be either LL-913 or PS-142. You probably have the original 1953 recording.

Chip,
Mine is LL-913.  I'm guessing this is probably the 1953 recording.

Thanks for your help as always!

Yes, that copy you have (catalog #LL-913) is indeed the original 1953 mono recording.

The definitive version of this classic and legendary album is the 1958 recording (catalog #PS-142). It's not only superior technologically because of the stereo, but artistically as well because of Monty's perfected arrangements. This is the version that I got reissued on CD for the first time in 2009; and reissued again this year in 2016. It's one of my most proud accomplishments.

This album not only resides in the 1st Tier of my
Top 500, but in my Ultra Top 10, coming in at #3.

Thanks again!
I have the 2009 CD, but have started to build up my vinyl collection once again and when I saw the Mantovani LP I pounced on it, obviously not realizing that this was the mono version.  I will have to find a clean copy of the 1958 stereo version.

The 1953 Lp also goes by the Title "An Album of Christmas Music" as well,BTW,and was available  in both 10" and 12" Lp forms, and on a 78 RPM set, too, hence the Sped-Up arrangements the 1959 Remakes Slows down considerably....An aside, both versions are also available as Mp3 Downloads on both Amazon and Google play-only difference is the Covers-The '53 Original has the Tree and Gifts on the Front Cover, the other has Monty, with His Back Turned, conducting.
