Hi

What are your favorite Christmas themed episodes from classic Sit-Coms??

My all time favorite is The Honeymooners "Twas The Night Before Christmas" that wonderful speech Jackie Gleason gives at the end of the show has to be one of the most meanigful and will give any Scrooge the Christmas spirit! Hey Chip do you have a picture from that episode?

I agree; it's hard for any other sitcom Christmas episode to compare to that great 1955 Honeymooner's classic.

Here are two great pictures from the show: the first is when Ralph's explaining to Alice the reason why he had to hock his bowling ball; and the second is a picture of the curtain call that Jackie, Audrey, Art and Joyce took at the end of the show.

And let's not forget Jackie's outstanding contribution with his great orchestra to our treasured world of great Christmas music1956's Merry Christmas and 1967's 'Tis The Season.

By the way, another great sitcom Christmas episode was one I saw when it first premiered on Saturday, December 19, 1970: Christmas and the Hard-Luck Kid II from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. That night it premiered our TV was on the blink and the color was out. I was so disappointed that I couldn't see in color the Christmas lights that were on Mary's tree and windows. This was truly a great episode and I always thought -- even as a kid -- that Mary was one groovy chick.

Re:Favorite Sit-Com Christmas themed Episodes

One of My Favorite Sit-Com Christmas themed episodes was from I Love Lucy.  I don't have my DVD's handy to try any get pictures off them.

After Little Ricky went to bed, Fred brought in the tree and Lucy noticed that a branch was to long and she asked Fred to trim it.  Then there was another one and he trimmed that one.  Then she noticed another and asked Fred to trim it.

They start reminiscing about when Lucy was pregnant and how she told Ricky at the club that she was pregnant.

After reminiscing, the first part, Fred had completely trimmed all the branches off the tree and had to go get another one.  Then they were decorating the tree and Ricky started singing Jingle Bells in Spanish and when Lucy started to sing they stopped and Lucy said she didn't know what happened to her voice and they reminisced about Lucy wanted ot be part of the Barber Shop Quartet and unbeknown to Ricky, Fred and Ethel she was in the barber chair with a towel on her face.

After this reminiscing, they decided that  either Fred, Ethel, Ricky or Lucy were going to dress up as Santa to surprise little Ricky.  They all showed up in the kitchen dressed as Santa.

When they pulled on each others  beard to see who was who, Santa said "ouch" and then disappeared.  Then everyone looked at each other and turned to the audience and in astonishment said "Merry Christmas Everybody"

Somewhere in the credits/special features or something on the DVD it mentioned that this scene worked out so well that they decided to use it in another episode and they showed that scene on the DVD too.

The other episode this was in was when when they were singing Jingle Bells and dancing around the Christmas Tree, all dressed as Santa and all of a sudden there were five Santa's.

I found some scenes of the Christmas episode on YouTube in color  They aren't the complete episode though.

Rather then embed the scenes I just put the links to save space on the message board.

Bewitched had a few Christmas episodes - my favorite is in the first season I think - Billy Mumy plays a orphan who for a quite a small kid is a big cynic and believes in nothing - he gets to spend Christmas with the Stevens and Samantha takes both him and Darrin to the Northpole to meet Santa.

A great episode!

Seaon one of Hazel also has a great Christmas episode too - Father Knows Best had a really great episode where Jim gets the family in the car to go north up into the country to cut down their own tree like they did in the olden days!  And they get caught in a snowstorm and need to find refuge in a lodge that is closed for the winter.   They meet "Nick" played by Wallace Ford and they all get a welcomed dose of the Christmas Spirit!

Classic stuff!!!!!!

Hi Maxx,

I just watched a Christmas episode of Bewitched yesterday on WGN America.  Not sure which season it was from but Darrin was played by Dick Sargent.

In this one Darrin and Samantha were watching an African American co-worker of Darrin's daughter while her parents went on a business trip.

An advertising client was supposed to meet with Darrin and called to change the appointment time.  He showed up at the Stephen's house unexpectedly (to check for skeletons in the closet) and the girl they were watching answered the door and he asked who are you and she told him she was Tabatha's sister.

Samantha told them they were like sisters.  They were playing with paints and the girl got paint all over herself and Tabatha offered to clean it up but told the girl she had to close her eyes because it was a secret.

Tabatha twitched her nose and the paint was gone but the girl was white with blond hair.  So Tabatha switched her back and they were still talking about being sisters so Tabatha turned herself black with black hair.

The girl said your mommy will never recognize you so Tabatha turned herself back.  Then she wished that they could truly be sisters and they turned polka dot.  Tabatha had brown spots and the girl had white spots.

The client decided he didn't want McMann & Tate for their advertising agency because he assumed that Darrin was married to an African American.  They invited him to the office party and it got changed to the Stephen's house.

Later on he came to the Stephen's house and Darrin and the girls mother answered the door and he assumed she was married to Darrin.  He had a black doll for the girl and a white doll for Tabatha and a Panda Bear for Adam because he didn't know which race Adam was.

He was about to leave when Samantha cast a spell on him and he saw all white people as black including himself when he looked into a mirror.

He came back Christmas morning and said he didn't sleep well and admitted he was a racist and apologized.  They invited him to dinner.

I like this episode a lot as it was in color and the whole house was decorated for Christmas which was beautiful.

Hi

That episode you refer to is called "Sisters at Heart" and aired originally on Christmas Eve 1970 - during the shows 7th Season.   If I remember correctly it ends in a shot where Sam and Darrin are kissing by the Christmas tree as the camera moves back and we see them now through the doors of the patio and the snow is falling and there is really nice Christmas music as underscoring.   I clearly remember Elizabeth Montegomery's voice over saying something "Merry Chrsitmas to all" etc.  A good episode that had a message but handled it very well!

I actually do have seasons 1-4 on dvd and I looked up the title of the episode I mentioned with Billy Mumy and it is called "Visions of Sugar Plums" a classic episode airing originally again on Christmas Eve the date of 12/24 - 1964!!!    There is another great Christmas themed episode featuring the legendary character actor Charles Lane as Mr Mortimer - didn't get a chance to get the title from the dvd set I think it would be Season 3 or 4!

I did not buy Seaon five because Darrin (Dick York) was really beginning to show the physical toll of his back injury he had suffered on a film shoot a few years earlier - he was appearing in less episodes and needing to be written out of them - not that I had a dislike of the second Darrin for me Dick York was part of the success of the series and his loss was felt very much --- to me the classic years of Bewtiched were 1964-68 there are still some great episodes when York appeared during the 5th Season but fewer for sure.

Hi Maxx,

Thanks for letting me know the title of the episode.  I usually look for Christmas episodes on TV throughout the year but wasn't home when this episode started and missed a few minutes.  I didn't think to look at the guide to see the title.

Yes the music at the end after Darrin & Samantha kissed was beautiful.

I was only 12 at the time this episode originally aired, and seeing it on TV these days, I was surprised that the censors did this episode because of the subject matter, but as you said,  it did have a good message and was handled well.

It is a message that we can all learn from even today.

I am not an expert in this area, but I think Bewitched was one of the first TV shows that showed husband and wife sleeping in the same bed.

The 1970's really started changing what the censors would allow and "All in the Family" I believe was the first TV show where they showed, ahem, male parts, when Gloria gave birth Joey.  I haven't seen All in the Family in years, so I don't remember if it was the episode when he was born or if it was later.

Censorship has come a long way today and they barely bleep out anything anymore.

TV Ain't wait it used to be lol.  It was much better in the 1950's 1960's and early 1970's

You make excellent points!!   The shows of the 50's and 60's though were the best - especially the comedies - so well written and so funny with everyday situations but the humor was derived by making the situations exaggerated!!!!

Watch a classic episode of I LOVE LUCY - one that comes to mind is when she and Ricky and the Mertzes are in CT and decide to go into the egg business but the chickens aren't laying eggs - so Lucy buys dozens of eggs with the plan to make Ricky think the chickens are finally coming through! She puts the eggs in her jacket - the pockets -- etc and then Ricky comes in and wants to rehearse the tango they are going to do at a benefit or something and you know what is gonna happen for the big finale Lucy is due to crash into Ricky and she does and the result was the longest laugh in the entire run of the series it lasted for minutes and had to be shortened of course.   Now that is funny stuff - no dirt just great writing.

Look at Leave it to Beaver (the entire series is being released at the end of June with great bonus features by SHOUT FACTORY it is gonna be a sweet set) the warmth and gentle humor has never been duplicated - same with Father Knows Best!   I had a talk with Billy Gray (Bud in Father Knows Best) recently and he described the care that went into making that show and sincere affection they had while making the series and it shows!

Any other favorite Christmas shows????????????

Though I don't remember specifics, there were some good Ozzie & Harriet Christmas episodes too.  One was where Ozzie was tryng to decorate the house and so on but everyone wanted him for other things.  He was supposed to take the place of someone who couldn't do the Christmas play.  He basically was doing for others so he didn't have time to do things for himself.  I believe David and Ricky ended up putting up the outdoor lights and setting up the tree.

I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them right now.

I like the Christmas episode(only one made?) from the original Twilight Zone series with Rod Serling. Guest starring Art Carney as a drunken Santa Claus. A real classic to add to one's holiday collection

Hi Richiedoo,

That was title "The Night Of The Meek" and it is my all - time favorite Twilight Zone episode.  Though it isn't a sit-com.  It originally aired on TV on 23 December 1960 (Season 2, Episode 11)

I use a little bit of "The First Noel" that plays a few times in this episode as my start-up and shut-down for Windows -XP on my computer.

I watch this episode several times a year.

The Bob Newhart Show episode "Bob Has to Have His Tonsils Out, So He Spends Christmas Eve in the Hospital".

Yes, that's the actual title of the episode.  I guess the storyline is pretty self-explanatory.

Re:Favorite Sit-Com Christmas themed Episodes

Hi folks!  My first post and since I adore making lists, I thought this was the perfect place to begin posting.    I adore Christmas episodes and here are a few that I recall, off the top of my head:

-The Lucy Show...Lucy, Viv and the kids decide to spend Christmas at home and then clash about each other's traditions.  The kids go out caroling and Lucy and Viv get hacking at each other's Christmas trees...one silver and one green and with the carolers about to descend, they quickly combine their trees!  Love this one!

-The Flintstones....from the original TV series, where Fred takes on a second job to help for Christmas gifts and ends up taking over for an ill Santa.

-The Donna Reed Show...Donna goes into the hospital to help with a Christmas party for sick children and her own kids aren't too happy that their Christmas Eve is being messed up, but Alex takes them to the hospital and they help with passing out gifts.

-I Love Lucy...I see this one has been mentioned, but I like the whittled down and colorized version of the episode, too.

-Lassie...while not a sit-com, the original 50s/60s series had some excellent Christmas episodes.

-Thunderbirds & Stingray....Again, these aren't sit-coms, but they also each had a wonderful Christmas episode.

-Davey & Goliath....Not a sit-com, but a wonderful Christmas episode.

Other TV episodes that I really enjoy....Are You Being Served?, The Waltons, M*A*S*H, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Brady Bunch, The Good Life/Good Neighbors and the Honeymooners.

I have nothing but fond memories of TV episodes, when I was growing up and naturally, grew up watching, Rudolph, Charlie Brown, Frosty and the Grinch, every year.  Those were the days before VCRs and DVD players, so if you missed the special, you were out of luck till the following year!

Hope you guys don't mind me resurrecting this topic.  My vote has to go to the three Christmas Dennis The Menace episodes.  (Coincidentally, the first season DVD was just released this week).

1959 - Dennis tries to figure out where his Christmas presents have been hidden.
1960 - Dennis trades his typewriter for a neighbor kid's horse.
1961 - Mr. Wilson decides Dennis should have his own tree that they chop down themselves.

Each episode ended with Dennis singing a chorus of "Silent Night."

Both "Christmas and the Hard Luck Kids" (That Girl, as well as the aforementioned MTM episode...Phyllis: "I'm a Christmas nut!"  Rhoda: "Not just Christmas.")

British comedies have a lot of good Christmas eps...Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances, and Mr. Bean.  But my favorite was Vicar of Dibley's "Christmas Lunch Incident."  The Worst Week of My Life had a mini-season dedicated to the holiday too.

Not a sitcom, but the DC Animated Universe has Batman's "Christmas with the Joker" and "Holiday Knights."  And Justice League's "Comfort and Joy," which is probably my favorite.  My brother and I watch all every year.

I also have a soft spot for "The Christmas Raccoons" (Canadian based cartoon, led to more specials and a series in the '80s) and the He-Man and She-Ra Christmas special.  And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention both Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes, which spoofed the movies "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" and "Santa Claus."

BTW, to answer some of the sentiments expressed above...there are a few modern programs I do like, even with the current edgy style.  But nothing will ever replace the shows of the '50s-'80s.  What a great time to be a watcher!

Chip?

I noticed that the images we had in our posts are gone, which I know had to do with Aimoo changing their servers.

Your post (Date Posted: 06/22/2010 14:12)  Post # 17 is missing your graphic at the end in your reply to AKATune welcoming her to the board.

Also my post where for The Twilight Zone "Night of the Meek" there are 2 graphics missing, but I haven't a clue as to what I might have posted there.  Post # 14.  I can't imagine why I would've posted an image there.

I''m sure as someone responds to older posts too that we will find out grahpics are gone but I was wondering if in your archives you would be able to tell what images we had posted?

The images that are missing are older images that were lost before the conversion to the new image server. Apparently, the old image server reached its maximum capacity and some of the older images were jettisoned. That's why Aimoo had to convert to the new image server. Hopefully, no more images should ever be lost again.

Brady Bunch is the best
When Cindy asks the department store Santa to give Carol her voice back, he agrees.
When Mike reminds Cindy that the guy' not a doctor she answers "He's better than a doctor daddy, he's Santa Claus!". How great is that?!?

News Radio  is one I havn't seen mentioned yet

I know it's not Christmas, but WKRP's "Turkey's Away" is one of the all time best holiday episodes.

Maxx151 Didn't specify TV sitcoms, so I'm going to stretch this topic a little bit so as to include radio sitcoms too, if you don't mind.

My all time favorite, which I've listened to nearly every year for the past twenty or more years is "Christmast Eve at the Gildersleeves" which aired on December 22, 1948 when I was five years old.  I had become a big fan of radio shows that year, and had asked Santa to bring me my own radio for Christmas.

And he did!  Or rather she did!  (My bedroom was next to the living room in our tiny little cottage, and I spied through the keyhole from my bedroom into the front room as my mom put the Sears Silvertone radio under the tree).

This radio show may be too schmaltzy for today's sophisticated tastes, but I still get misty-eyed each time I listen to it.  You can hear it online here:

You'll have to scroll down to episode #265  1948-12-22  Christmas Eve at the Gildesleeves [sic] (30 min)

I've been trying to find it on CD, but all I've come up with so far is a set of 8 CDs selling for $31.95 (Ack!) that includes that episode.

I have it on cassette, but that recording suffers from such a severe case of "print through" (or something very much like it) that the impact of the quiet scenes is spoiled by all the extraneous music and voices chattering in the background (Argh!).

I also have an MP3 of it, but at my age, I still haven't got my hand-me-down stereo configured to play MP3s.

So I'm hoping to find it on an affordable CD between now and next Christmas.

That's a big part of the fun of collecting, isn't it?  There's always one thing more that you just have to add to your collection, right?

P.S.  You're probably wondering how I could have the time to be posting this on Christmas Eve.  Well, I've been so sick the last few weeks that I've had to turn down the usual invitations to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day parties.  So, this year I'm having my Christmas "Home Alone."  And so far it's been a lot of fun.  Last night I watched (or started to watch) one of my favorite Christmas movies (until the VCR went haywire on me, half way through).  And I've got lots of CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs, LPs, 45s, cassettes, MP3s, guitar music, family photos, Christmas cards, and Christmas books lined up to keep me company today and tomorrow.  Right now I'm going to haul the back-up VCR out of the back room and press it into service so I can watch the second half of that movie tonight.

And there's a couple more posts here on the Yule Log that I'd like to reply to, so I've got plenty to keep me busy until I get so sleepy that I can't stay awake anymore.  Lately that's been about 8:30 PM  (not counting my midday nap)  ;o)

P.P.S.  I just got the VCR working again!  I swapped out the coaxial cable and now the picture looks better than ever!  Christmas Eve, here I come!

P.P.P.S.  My adoptive family just messaged me that they're having tamales tonight to celebrate La Buena Noche.  Oh, my gastritis!  My will power is beginning to crumble.  But if I go, I'm sure my stomach will punish me big time all day tomorrow.  What's a fellow to do?!

A favorite of mine is "WKRP in Cincinnatti" where the characters are all "Christmas Carol" characters! Though not as popular as the classic sitcoms. it's a favorite of mine. Do you remember "Amazing Stories"that was a short lived series on NBC? In their forst season they ran "Santa 85" which was a cute and predictable Christmas story! Re:Favorite Sit-Com Christmas themed Episodes

I always used to look at TV Guide when I was a kid to see which shows were having Christmas episodes. That and the various Christmas specials by artists like Andy Williams and The King Family.
I've always enjoyed the 'Christmas Crackers' episode of Are You Being Served? shown on December 24, 1975.

Of course, The Monkees Christmas episode from 1967 with Butch Patrick if classic.

Hi Jeff!

It's so nice to hear that you enjoyed the "Christmas Eve at the Gildersleeves" radio episode I posted about last month (see message #21 in this thread).

Listening to it each year has become, perhaps, my favorite holiday tradition.  I'm a child of the radio age, and spent my formative years in a world without television, so my fondest memories of sitcoms are of old radio shows like "The Great Gildersleeve."

Also high on my list of non-musical Christmas audio recordings, (though not strictly speaking "sitcoms") are Dylan Thomas reading "A Child's Christmas in Wales" and an old Pathways of Sound LP ( POS 1022) of Robert A. Brooks reading the "Dulce Domum" chapter from The Wind in the Willows.  As far as I can tell the latter has never been released on CD, and that's a shame, because it's such an utterly charming and heartwarming little episode (One of these days, before I croak, I'm going to try to figure out how to transfer my LP recording to a CD).

I'm afraid I've been so sick this season that I had to forgo nearly all my usual holiday activities and ended up spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at home in bed.   I'm calling it "My Year Without a Christmas."  I'm only now getting back enough strength to play catch-up and have started reading the recent messages on the board.  Just the fact that I'm able to sit up and type this post is a sign that I'm on the mend, though I still have a long way to go before I'm back to my "normal," but severely limited, level of of activity.

Let me take this opportunity to say thanks to all of you for celebrating, via the web, a virtual  Christmas with me this year.  It's snowing this morning out here in Seattle, so I'm going to play some Christmas music, while I start boxing up my Christmas decorations, and treat today as a better-late-than-never Christmas.

So glad you're feeling better Will!

Join the crowd, we are still listening to Christmas music in our house and probably will be for at least another week. Then we'll drop back to playing Christmas stuff on each weekend nearest the 25th of the month up until late November when we'll begin again in earnest. I think we'll even rerun our recorded Yule Log broadcast from Christmas 2011. It's always fun to hear Christmas music outside of the normal time of the year in my opinion. Hope you will get some enjoyment out of your better-late-than-never Christmas celebration.

I did not grow up in the era of radio drama but my Mom and Dad did. Mom would regale us kids about her times spent around the family radio listening to such classics as The Shadow and The Aldrich Family. I thoroughly enjoy listening to such episodes via the Internet archives and other sources and once again thank you for bringing that episode of The Great Gildersleeve to my attention via this forum. I'll be going on an Internet hunt for the Dylan Thomas reading, thanks for the tip!

Jeff

Here's a question: which series that didn't have a Christmas episode do you wish had one?
Christmas is Christmas all over the world!
