"Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars", Casey Kasem would always end his America's Top 40 radio show and America's Top 10 TV show with these words of wisdom. Now his voice and life is silenced. Besides his radio and TV shows, Kasem was famous for the cartoon voices of Shaggy in Scooby Doo and Robin in Super Friends. His voice was briefly featured in the 1984 hit film, Ghostbusters (which is supposed to be re-released in theaters for its 30th anniversary later this year) as was his wife, Jean Kasem who played Rick Moranis' ditzy date at his party during the scene where a creature crashes it. Anyway, to get back to Casey, he also was the voice of Peter Cottontail in the Rankin/Bass Easter TV special, Here Comes Peter Cottontail. He also helped out Jerry Lewis during Jerry's years as host of the Labor Day MDA Telethons. As for his contribution to Christmas, Casey hosted a 1981 one-hour special entitled, An America's Top Ten Christmas which featured rare music clips of Mahalia Jackson (Silent Night), Barry Gordon (Nuttin' For Christmas), Pat Boone (Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town), Johnny Mathis (Winter Wonderland), Donny Osmond (Jingle Bell Rock), Johnny Lee (Please Come Home For Christmas), The Chipmunks with David Seville (The Chipmunk Song), Gene Autry (Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer), Bing Crosby (White Christmas), Paul McCartney & Wings (Wonderful Christmastime) and a clip from the Rankin/Bass TV special, The Little Drummer Boy, Book II (The Little Drummer Boy). The special featured interviews and Christmas greetings from Eddie Rabbitt, The Pointer Sisters, The Commodores (with Lionel Richie), Ringo Starr, Barry Gordon and Gene Autry plus an interview with a man who had been the White House Santa Claus since Eisenhower was President. I assume the man had passed away a long while back since the special first aired in 1981. There are 2 versions of this syndicated TV special - The original which contained the making and performing of a little known Christmas song called Katey's Christmas Card by John Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard); the second was a re-edited version which aired in 1987 removing that John Schneider song and replacing it with the more popular and memorable music video, Do They Know It's Christmas from Band Aid. Now Casey Kasem is among the angels with his feet off the ground and is among the stars in the sky. Rest in peace, Casey. I know I won't forget you.

The most significant contribution that he made to the Christmas season was his voice-over work for the 1973 animated TV special The Bear That Slept Through Christmas. Subsequent to this, there was also 1974's The City That Forgot About Christmas, 1997's Merry Christmas, George Bailey and 2004's A Scooby-Doo Christmas.

I didn't know about those specials and movies though I assumed there was a Christmas Scooby Doo special or movie but didn't know the title or year it came out. Thanks for the info, Chip. Another memory I have of Casey Kasem was that he provided the voiceover for many promos for shows, specials and movies that aired on the NBC television network during the late 70's and early 80's. I have a couple of these NBC promos on video.

A lot of people aren't aware of those Christmas specials that I mentioned, Jerry, as none of them ever became bone fide perennial Christmas classics like the Rankin/Bass specials did.

I saw "The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas," a looooong time ago. I kinda figured its lack of coverage was perhaps due to being more or less a local broadcast? Was it typically seen outside of the tristate area?

No Chris, The Bear That Slept Through Christmas was not a local Tri-state broadcast; it was broadcast nationally, first by NBC, and then later by CBS. In the early 1980s it went into syndication and was also released on VHS.
